Anyone with some semblance of baseball knowledge would look at the batting record of Kole Calhoun and would conclude two things:
(1) He has legit middle-of-the order power, with an ISO over .200 every year in the minors despite skipping levels twice and an ISO of nearly .200 last year his first time facing major league pitchers.
(2) He showed an equal ability to hit left-handers. Last year, for example, his OPS was .889 versus lefties. Last year in AAA he had an OPS of 1.226 versus lefties (that is not a type) In 2012, in the minors he had am OPS of .802 versus lefties. In 2011 it was .897.
So naturally, what does Scioscia do? Bat him lead-off and bench him against lefties. Why? So he can platoon him with Cowgill, his stats are fueld by an unsustainable BABIP of .385 -- pretty much all projection systems project he will be below a league-average hitter the balance of the season.
Stop benching Calhoun against lefties. Move him down in the order where his extra-base hits can produce more runs.
