Marketing Geniuses Get an Epic Fail at Angels First "Star Wars Night"

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Where do I begin? As a season ticket holder for a combined 30+ years (1977-95 and 2002 to the present), the Angels have finally cheaped out and disappointed many a fan tonight. Myself included. This was my first game of the season (I share seats with a group).

I am all for fan safety and the metal detectors did not add much time to entry, however, being told that "you're a season ticket holder you need to be in the other line" at the third base entrance, only to be then told I was in the wrong line and had to go back to the other line by the Mensas running security, was the first indication tonight would not be running smoothly.

Marketing tip #1 - Have a consistent message.

Now, with tonight being well advertised as "Star Wars Night" there was absolutely zero promotion that the "giveaway" was a separate deal to season ticket holders. You better have Jedi on your ticket or else...no giveaway for you. Guess what? This also includes season ticket holders. After being told that the thousands we spend annually included no promotional items for our four seats, "because this is a separate promotion and was advertised as such" per the Angels Marketing Director. I then asked where that was written for Season Ticket Holders, his expression was as blank as a Storm Trooper. I asked where-as season ticket holders-we would have been informed, I was told there was no such message to season ticket holders, but that the ONLY way a season ticket holder would have received a a promotional item is to BUY ANOTHER TICKET and then purchase the promo separately.

Message #2 - Communicate with your Season Ticket Holders

Now, if you want to start charging for the promotional items that are separate from a matching theme night, fine, but why not make it available to your season seat holders? No, let's give them hassles, excuses and "oh sorry, we did not think of that." I guess putting a message in the Season Seat Holder Kit would have been too difficult? Oh wait, maybe something in the email that gets sent to Season Seat Holders before each home stand? Strike Two!

Message #3 - It is freaking Star Wars people. Get a clue.

I guess the marketing team had no idea that Star Wars Celebration (a HUGE Star Wars Convention) wrapped up yesterday in Anaheim. I would doubt that since they had David Eckstein's wife (who voices a Star Wars animated character) and had to arrange things with her as well as the multitude of characters walking around that they had to contract (and had been in attendance at the convention). Arrrgh, and Strike Three looking, just like Shea Hillenbrand or Gary Matthews, Jr.

It is as if the marketing department wanted to tick off their most loyal fans, but at the heart of it, just reinforced how important it is to get one over on those loyal fans, the season ticket holders.
