Would it have been worth it?

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

I was an outspoken Yoenis Cespedes supporter from the beginning. I liked his defense, his arm, his power, his ability to not be a black hole. His on-base skills are obviously lackluster, but I felt he was the solid number two free agent behind Jason Heyward.

That means nothing. Cespedes did not take an NY discount. In fact, his win as a free agent is a win for free agents everywhere as he has a 25 MILLION dollar average annual value on his contract! His first year alone, he has an opt-out and a payday of 27.5MM.

People are actually crying on here, groaning and moaning for not handing out another Miguel Cabrera contract. And it gets better because if Cespedes falls back to the earth hard, the Mets are stuck for three years with Josh freaking Hamilton (same 25MM aav).

I'm sorry guys. I can't get behind the doom and gloom. We should have gotten Heyward, but this move was idiotic on the Mets' part. We're just not a good enough team to need to waste 25MM over three years on someone who might put us over the top on just getting into the playoffs.

I say suffer two more years and use the excess money to get the good free agents. Cespedes is good, but not anywhere near that good.
