Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Game 95/162

Game Thread - Angels at Royals - Santana vs. Gobble - 5:10 p.m.

Star-divide

If the Sun has set, will the Voodoo rise away from home?

Intentionally Altered Movie Lines:
C-3PO: Did you hear that? They shut down the American League West. We'll be destroyed for sure. This is madness.

The Royals just gave Boston a scare or three, so this is no pushover. Needless to say, you just know the Angels will be loading up on the bah-buh-koo over the next four days. And if it turns out to be a laugher of a four game set, maybe Boston's best days are behind them - good to know as we head there next weekend.

you missed the time
several of us picked them to lose during the first half hoping reverse psychology would work. Sometimes it did, most of the time it didn't. We also threatened to go to the Big A and perform beer sacrfices to get them going. That worked a little because they started to win more than lose.

El Mineo
A few times, Hud has mentioned that our beloved Black Magic actually already has a nickname, but it's in Spanish.  He says it's (and I'm doing it phonetically, since my Spanish is pretty much limited to mas cerveza, por favor) "El Mineo," or maybe he's saying "Minejo," or maybe even "miñejo."  I'm not sure.  But it's something like "the shake," because when Santana is walking, he has a bit of a shimmy/shake to his head & neck.  So, that's his nickname, apparently.

But it would be nice to know how to spell it.

The picks:

Angels originally of L.A., and now back again (kinda): 8/13

Team from one of the Pathetics' former homes: 2/6

by jjackflash on Jul 20, 2006 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

Why am I trying to solve The Hud?
My Spanish ain't much better than yours (and my English ain't much good either!) But...according to online translators:

el minejo is "the ore"

el sacudir is "the shake"

by gorams77 on Jul 20, 2006 5:42 PM PDT reply actions

Where's the plate?
Sometimes, inexplicably, it's as if Santana simply forgets where the plate is and gets incredibly wild.  Fortunately, in other games, he figures it out by the next inning.  Let's hope this is one of those things where he was just opening up too early or something, and he'll straighten himself out (with some advice from Buddy Black).

What I find annoying
in retrospect is Scioscia's comment that the majors are not about player development but production on the one hand (talking about Kotchman or McPherson, forget which one), but letting Anderson face lefties when he's indisputably proven he can't hit them this year.
Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.

by scareduck on Jul 20, 2006 5:50 PM PDT reply actions

Living in the past
At one time (maybe even as recently as 2005), GA hit lefties very well, at least in terms of average.  There was really no dropoff in his #s, which is surprising.

But he's not the same player he used to be.  Scioscia apparently can't see this, as he has justified GA's place in the lineup on what he has done in the past rather than what he is presently capable of doing.  It's completely irrational.

by jjackflash on Jul 20, 2006 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I mean
For a guy who disdains stats and prefers to make decisions based upon what he can see, you'd think that he'd see how bad GA looks against lefties.

Lets seee
Unearned run is if a player scores by an error or is put into a position that scored (which if the error hadn't occured wouldn't have scored otherwise).

I actually kind of like Hudler
His heart's in the right place, kinda reminds me of my brother, etc. And he's not as bad as Joe "repeate everything three times, unless you're wrong, in which case repeat it four times" Morgan. But every time he starts a sentence with "That's because" -- as in, "That's because he's a ve-trun!" -- you know you're going to hear a lot of cack. Dude just doesn't appreciate the value of silence when struck with a case of the ign'ance.
