Lackey Wants Kennedy, Erstad to Stay

By Mike DiGiovanna, Times Staff Writer
September 27, 2006

If the opinion of the pitcher who will be a rotation cornerstone for years to come carries any weight, the Angels should think long and hard before allowing two respected veterans, second baseman Adam Kennedy and first baseman Darin Erstad, to leave as free agents this winter.

"The organization is going to have to be real careful," right-hander John Lackey, who is signed through 2008 with an option for 2009, said Tuesday. "We've lost the things that made us good, piece by piece; you can't let them all go. Some things are more important than numbers -- intangibles, guys who know how to win, who are gamers, who have done it before."
Kennedy and Erstad played key roles on teams that won the World Series in 2002 and American League West titles in 2004 and 2005, Kennedy's providing consistent, high-level defense and some clutch postseason hits and Erstad's adding grit, some key playoff hits and superb defense.

Kennedy is almost certain to go the way of Troy Glaus, Bengie Molina, Jarrod Washburn and Troy Percival, productive veterans who were cleared out to make room for younger, less-expensive players. Howie Kendrick, Kennedy's heir apparent, has shown he's capable of hitting big league pitching and has looked sharp defensively.

Most figured Erstad, in the last year of a four-year, $32-million deal, would not be re-signed, but an ankle injury that sidelined him for most of 2006 and will require surgery could actually increase his chances of returning; he will probably be offered a minor league deal and invited to spring training.

"Bill and the guys upstairs are in a tough spot," Lackey said, referring to General Manager Bill Stoneman. "He's put together a playoff contender the last two years, so you can't fault him too much, but you're definitely going to lose something in the clubhouse if you let those guys go.

"If you do let them go, I hope they replace them with the same kind of character and intangibles."

Now my opinion:
Before going off and trying to find two or three editions of Jesus Christ mixed with Babe Ruth, how about telling the guys we ALREADY HAVE to start acting like BASEBALL PLAYERS?

These guys won a WS and two consecutive divisional titles, for chrissakes. And, to the WS team, we ADDED Vladi, Colon, Rivera, Izzy, OC, WTY, and now Saunders. Those are HUGE.

If Vladi was still with the Expos, you guys would be bitching about how much we should spend to get him. Well, we already GOT him. So why not tell Vladi to use 2 hands to catch the freakin ball.  He may be your worst baserunner. Don't have your worst runners try to squeeze out that extra base. Teach some plate discipline and not ALWAYS swing at the first pitch.

Hey managers! Quit trying the suicide ALL THE  TIME! It's supposed to catch the other guys off guard. Instead, we're just increasing the number of outs for our offense and surprising nobody. Quit having runners go home from third when the ball is hit in shallow left. When a player is obviously grimacing in pain, pull them out until they are healthy; pain is your body's way of saying something is WRONG. Quit moving around your players to every position and screwing around with their mental state. Play the positive aspects of the players. Tell the pitchers to do their job or they are gone.

Hey "fans"! Quit blaming all the coaches. The players are alleged adults making big bucks for their skills & talents-they need to pull their heads out of their ass and act like the professional baseball players they were hired to be. You can lead a horse to water, yada yada yada.

Get back to the frickin basics for chrissake. Learn to run, catch & hit.  Woulda, coulda, shoulda has been the theme this year.

Send these guys out on a wilderness trip for 2 weeks and make them bond and become a team. I just didn't see that this year and I think that's an integral part that was obviously missing.

C'mon now. I'm not having it...
You're telling us that a noted player on the ballclub actually had sex with another company employee on the company premises, during working hours, that the FEMALE was fired, and we haven't heard hide nor hair of it anywhere in the media??

This has widespread media coverage written all over it. Let's see: sexual harrassment, a organizational coverup of embarrassing proportions, with a prominent player?

I'd think that would be headline news on ESPN sportscenter. There would be a dozen television reporters outside that girl's front door asking for a quote at the very least.

Crazy.

They are too lazy to chase down good stories, too timid to bite the hand that feeds them and and terrified of being wrong about a single thing.

So they quote court documents and litigatory filings and pontificate over this stuff.

by Stirrups on Sep 27, 2006 12:20 PM PDT reply actions

Agree
We will not buy a World Series. It really isn't done that way. And Lackey is correct. His statement that "Some things are more important than numbers -- intangibles, guys who know how to win (.)" is absolutely true. For this reason I hope Erstad is on the team next year.

Above and beyond the obvious lack of power and terrible defense, I agree do agree with ladybug. The attitude of this squad was definitely lacking compared to past Angels teams... We can look at things like Vladdy's lack of focus on the basepaths, consistently making IDIOTIC decisions and running into outs needlessly. Also the poor fundamentals that ladybug mentioned (Vlad dropping balls when attempting one handed catches). All good points ladybug. And you're right on about Scioscia and the squeeze -- Mike is way to fucking predictable with that. Opposing managers see it coming a mile away.

In short, it is more than the talent on the field that needs to be upgraded. There needs to be an attitude adjustment and a new strategic approach which includes PLATE DISCIPLINE and understanding the difference between being aggressive and being RECKLESS. This has to be understood and applied, both with AB's and on the bases.

by Jack Frost on Sep 27, 2006 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Fire Mike Sciossa
The manager teaches the players to run, catch, and throw. The Angels don't do these elements very well. A + B = C.

He's horrible. He got lucky one year. He's a Florida Marlin, or a Diamondback at heart.

by ladybug on Sep 27, 2006 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I think this is a little severe
Mike Scioscia didn't get "lucky" as you say. He was a big part of the success of the 2002 team.

I do agree that he needs to adjust some things strategically, in terms of the overall approach, but I also think he is a great leader and knows how to handle a clubhouse. Firing Mike is NOT the answer.

by Jack Frost on Sep 27, 2006 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

The Boss has to know what tools he carries
What worked in 2002, and in the past might not work now. Mikey has to learn that different players, and positions for that matter, need and have different skills. Times change.

IMHO
I think the players like, and respect, the Hack. But they might be getting tired of his style, and banter. They say yes while knowingly, or thinking, that his style ain't for them. So the players go up to bat a little confused (we all seen that look on all of the players). It might be time for an oil change before the whole pot gets rancid.

by eyespy on Sep 27, 2006 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a two way street
Your quib about him learning Spanish fails to acknowledge that the Latin players who speak very little or no English HAVE TO WANT TO ENGAGE their teammates that are no Spanish speaking.

Why is it that Lackey needs to learn Spanish?
Shouldn't an effort be made by Latin players to include others, rather than cultivating their little exclusive circle. For example, I think Bengie was friendly with many of his teammates while here -- and not just the other Latin players.

by Jack Frost on Sep 27, 2006 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

What I mean is
that with AK, and The Punter possibly leaving the team there will be two less English speaking friends in the clubhouse.
And John learning Spanish would be a good thing for team relations. Try and speak the tongue of the other man is a good way to make friends in the real world.
But true when in Rome do as the Romans. The Latinos should learn English, and they all probably can get by in the clubhouse. They just might not be comfortable in a serious situation like most non native speakers are.
I live in Hawaii with lots of immigrants, and was an immigrant in Japan myself. So I have been on both sides of the coin.

The only riff
is the one IMAGINED by fans - the Angels clubhouse is a mellow, hospitable place. The LA TIMES hypes the shit out of a guy wanting his friends to stay with the team.

The fracas earlier this season was between Figgy and Donnelly. They are both English speaking Kindergarten graduates.

by Rev Halofan on Sep 27, 2006 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

don't forget
the Kennedy-Kotchman spat in the dugout early in the season.  Two of the whitest guys on the team...

In any event, I get the feeling that many of the Latin players speak a heck of a lot more English than they let on.

E.g., earlier this year, Jose Mota was doing a live, postgame interview with Vlad.  He asked his questions in English, and Vlad simply responded in Spanish.  But quite obviously, he understood Mota (who then translated Vlad's responses for the English-speaking viewers).

And we know that Santana does English-language interviews, as do Cabrera, Escobar & K-Rod.

I suspect that they all understand & can communicate with each other, regardless of the language spoken.

by jjackflash on Sep 28, 2006 11:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I get the feeling
Vlad doesn't really care to be interviewed anyways, so he figures, "If they insist on interviewing me, the least I can do is make it on my terms."  And it's his right to do so.

02 was a long time ago ...
and most of the veterans that made that team special had career years and are past their effective years (Erstad, Salmon, Percival, Spiezio) or soon to be past their effective years (Kennedy, G.A., Donelly).

I can't help but wonder if when Lackey says: "intangibles, guys who know how to win, who are gamers" and "If you do let them go, I hope they replace them with the same kind of character and intangibles." he doesn't mean we need to get more white guys for me to hang out with.

I like Lackey, so I hope it is not the case.  Thing is I never see him joking around with the players of other races.  What I do see is Lackey chewing out Kendrick when he made an error and Lackey saying "Thats my boy!" when Kennedy makes a good play.   Whatever the case, Lackey should stick to pitching and let Sosh, Bill, and Arte do their job.

Remember though, this is limited info from one article and we're building all kinds of assumptions out of it.

If Lackey does feel this way he is missing a couple things:  OC is a total gamer and we replaced Eck with him...  Kendrick is a gamer and a happy, positive force in the clubhouse and he's replacing Kennedy.

"The last time we got in a fight, we won the Series," Lackey said. "I'll be OK with that. Let's get it rolling."

Don't worry
If Lackey is truly lamenting the loss of friends and guys he connects with I'm 100% sure it has to do with language differences and not skin tone.

It just so happens that in MLB, less than 10% of American-born players are black. Fewer still are Hispanic (A-Rod/Nomar, etc.). If he prefers the English speakers, they're going to be disproportionately caucasian.

if i were to use your same deductive reasoning, then i wonder if arte moreno's a racist for marrying a white woman; if scioscia's biased against hispanic coaches because he doesn't have any in the dugout; if GA and Figgins hate white people because they talk alot in the dugout; if the angels organization is racist because they're celebrating Tim Salmon, a white guy; etc etc.

I don't think it's a secret or a huge deal that there are cliques in the clubhouse and it just so happens one click is mostly white American, another clique is made up of latin players.
