K-Rod: Is Francisco Rodriguez Doctoring the Ball?

If Francisco Rodriguez were doctoring the ball and has been for some time, why - after every team has hours of video of him pitching that they study - why has no team called or an inspection of his uniform or equipment?

You're tellin' me that his deliberate mannerisms on the mound that are relatively consistent through his six seasons in the majors are suddenly suspicious because a BLOGGER saw a reflective patch somewhere in the bill of his cap in a game THIS season?

The Chronicler picks the report apart quite well, but i must re-state my case: Why now?

He was being a little chicken shit about it
I had the same experience.  Here's my comment, which he never addressed or acknowledged:

It's the chicken or egg argument that DMZ seems to be missing here. You say he rubs his thumb on the smudge to doctor the ball. OK...but consider the other way around. Is the smudge THERE because that's WHERE he rubs his thumb? Do you have any video of his hat BEFORE the very first time he ever touched his hat that night?

Look again at this set of photos:
http://web.mit.edu/baxamusa/Public/does_krod_cheat.JPG

Look JUST above the point, roughly where his first joint is in his pointer finger, and you see the white is there as well. I'm just trying to be fair here, but you seem so caught up in saying that he is rubbing his thumb on the "doctoring substance", that you fail to realize that, as a creature of habit and OCD actions, if he were to rub his thumb on that part of his hat WITHOUT a substance there, that's where the substance would end up.

Hahaha
If you call that winning a debate, I'd be interested - and very entertained - so see you "lose" one.  He calmly took apart just about every argument you put forth, and you came back flailing more and more each time.  Nice job "proving him wrong."

Why now, Rev?
Why now?

It is because the A's are coming to town and need some sort of edge to start the series.  They are down in the standings and in momentum.  They are trying to get a psychological edge right away, as they do not have the intangibles we have at this point in time.

Carrasco doing it too?
Hell no.  I went home yesterday and watched the game on DVR.  If you pause it while Hector is on the mound you will see the same thing under his hat.

New year, new hats with black underneath.

Preposterous
Entirely different substance.  That's just a conditioner buildup stemming from Carrasco's Jheri curl.  The new caps for '07 were not industrially built to wick away hair-care product...

There's only one man on the face of the Earth other than K-Y who knows the truth.  And that man is: Ken Higdon.

My connections have been cut off...
I have been trying to get a name put up for a birthday on 4/21 and the person at x2070 is not answering and telling me to use the web site to make the reservation...but, there is no place to do that on the web site.  Anybody else been able to do this successfully via the web or Maria?

So, I think I have been cut off from my front office connections.  Sorry.

question here guys...
what fabric are these hats made of now? Didn't they switch from all natural wool whatever to a polyester based material? Another possibility is that there isn't anything there, it is merely the polyester getting rubbed to nice little sheen from KRod constantly rubbing his fingers on it. For any guy that has ironed something poly based and put the iron on a little bit high, same principle. I don't know if this accounts for the  amount of (whatever) I saw, but it is a possibility.

New material means more wicking of sweat
As someone else mentioned in the diary on same subject, the new material, evidently, wicks away sweat from the body quite rapidly.

From mlb.com:

3. Moisture and vapor management -- For the 59FIFTY game cap, moisture management takes moisture and wicks it away from the skin and moves it into the fabric. The fabric accepts the moisture and accelerates drying, keeping the player cooler and dryer. For the 39THIRTY BP cap, vapor management helps to eliminate moisture from even forming -- a very visible difference between the BP and game cap fabric. The BP cap also has a half-moon gusset and piping along the sides for added vapor management.

The USA Today story seems to tell a different story...the new hats should alleviate the white salt forming on the brim of the cap...interesting.

Maybe Frankie is one of the holdouts using an old wool version...

"Why does he fall down?"
Thats one of the questions my son, and his friends would ask during the Angel broadcasts.

The other was, "Why dose he tug, (touch, adjust, etc., etc.) his cap?".

And the one I never get tired of answering is, " Why does K-Rod point, spin, turn, scream, do banzai, look up, etc., etc., whenever he strikes out an opponent, or ends the game for a save or a win?"

by eyespy on Apr 5, 2007 10:11 AM PDT reply actions

Most other P's are tugging at something else....
They usually grab their nads.  At least Frankie isn't doing that.  Imagine trying to explain that to the youngins.

I remember a good close-up of Jerry Reuss of the Dodgers when I was a kid, he was diggin' for gold in his nose whilst innocently sitting in the dugout.  Downright comical and nasty.

The salt of the earth
This is K-Rod t-shirt night publicity.  Perhaps all of the t-shirts handed out tonight will have some K-Rod salt on them?  Years ago (1971) when I was at a rain delay in Atlanta the Braves ground crew spread out an infield tarp with the Morton salt logo.  Perhaps Frankie will start up his own salt company?

by Yetijuice on Apr 5, 2007 10:52 AM PDT reply actions

I work at the "salt mines" every day...
hahah...

I had to laugh, coz I knew nobody else would.

When was the last time we have seen a Morton salt advertisement?  :)  Is there a Morton Salt Stadium?  Or is that where the Braves play now?  :P

Morton Thiokol
Once upon a time I was a Morton Thiokol stockholder (all of 100 shares).  Morton made the salt and Thiokol made the rocket fuel.

Where was I when I learned about the space shuttle Challenger blowing up on 1/28/86?  I had just arrived at the dock at Na Thon on the west coast of Koh Samui in Thailand.  After checking for mail at the post restante I checked out an open air used book market.  A fellow American came up to me and told me about the description of the launch that his beach bungalow owner had hand gestured for him.  He interpreted the description as an explosion.  This was in the years before television on Koh Samui.  There was no airport on the island then.  Newspapers did not arrive until two days later to confirm the disaster.

Morton Thiokol's home office was on North Thacker Drive in Chicago.  I remember that because a company selling MLB videotapes was on the same street.  On that trip I stayed at Bungalow Bills at the south end of Lamai beach.  Yes, the Gulf of Siam is salty.
