Everyone who ever had a heart
They wouldn't turn around and break it
And anyone who ever played a part
Oh they wouldn't turn around and hate it!

Who hates his old team more, the Starbucks pitcher or their right fielder?

He finished up the 2nd half pretty nice that year.

by cupie on Jul 31, 2007 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

No, he really didn't finish nicely in 2003
He averaged a home run every 16.81 ABs in the first half of 2003.

He averaged a home run every 38.28 ABs in the second half of 2003.

His average and on-base percentage stayed the same but his power left him.

Frankie's arm is rusting off due to idleness down in the pen. We are going to rue the day we need him and he has absolutely zero to offer. Like, maybe, as early as tomorrow.

by melvintoast on Jul 31, 2007 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Look it up, dimwit.
The last time Frankie got into a game was the 25th against oakland. He was rusty then. Gave up 3 hits in one inning of work. Blew the save. All parties interviewed agreed that it was because he hadn't had work in nearly a week. It's the way the game is played these days, dude.

An 8-run lead is the perfect time to get some work in after a long layoff.

by Stirrups on Jul 31, 2007 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

You don't think he's thrown a baseball since the
25th?  Who were all the parties interviewed?  Did Sosh say he was rusty?  Did Frankie say he was rusty?

I'm looking it up... Okay... Frankie blew a save on April the 20th.  Prior to that he pitched on April 17th.  He also blew a save on June 24th.  Prior to that he pitched on June 22nd.  He blew his last save on July 25th. Prior to that he Pitched on July 19th.

On July 31st, John Lackey threw a complete game shutout, prior to that he pitched on July 25th.

So 5 days rest means a shutout for Lackey and rust for Frankie.  Is that what you're saying?

NOT good. BAD.
This ain't the 60's anymore. Relievers need work. After the three Detroit blowouts and now this. Frankie has only 7 appearances for ALL of July. Not good. Not. Good.

Like I said up above
I'd rather have a rested Frankie than a gassed Frankie for the stretch run.

8th and 9th inning.  He needs the experience.

You want him to make 55+ appearances?
For the fifth straight season? That's a quick way to get his arm blown out with the way he throws.
"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." - Sir Winston Churchill

by WeaverMania on Jul 31, 2007 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno.
Trevor Hoffman: 55, 70, 70, 66, 64, 70, 62, 61
Lee Smith: 72, 66, 69, 65, 66, 62, 64, 64, 64, 67, 70, 63

Etc.

I hear what you are saying about Frankie's mechanics. Folks have been saying that since day one. We have yet to find out if any of that is true. So far it is all wishful thinking by those who hate him.

by Stirrups on Jul 31, 2007 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

He's got 41 appearances in 105 games
That's about once every 2.5 games.

by melvintoast on Jul 31, 2007 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

It only takes one time
For us to get stupid with him by throwing him out there every day until he blows out his arm. One time. Plus, Hoffman and Smith don't (didn't) put near the same stress on their arm as Frankie does.

Ever think he's happy with the time off? No one had a problem with him getting June 2nd - 7th off. Or, July 8th - 12th. Or, him pitching once from April 7th - April 15th. But, since we're in a pennant race we should just throw him out there, in an 8-0 game when only bad things can happen, just for shits and giggles? Right.

Plus, we haven't really used him as our closer lately anyways. In tied games going to the ninth or tenth, he came in to pitch. It's not like he hasn't gotten time to pitch, it's just that he hasn't been put into a save situation that much in July. On top of that, he was doing great in his limited time in July until the Oakland game. One game does not a season make. Remember that.

He had six days off from June 2nd - 7th. Pitched once from June 2nd - 13th. Yet, hold the phone! It's June, not July. So, that changes things, right? He pitched seven times this month. Good. I'm glad. It means we're not overusing him for the stretch run.

But, uh oh! Bad news! We didn't use him. We're horrible.

by WeaverMania on Jul 31, 2007 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Forgot to add ..
In July, before the Oakland game, he was 2-0 with 2 saves, 1.08 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in six appearances.

The opposition was hitting .172/.273/.207 against him over that period of time.

But, one bad game means he isn't being used enough? Right. Keep telling yourself that.
