New York, NY (Sports Network) - Major League Baseball suspended minor league pitcher Jorge Sosa for 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance Thursday.
Sosa, who was signed to a minor league contract in July by the Mariners after being designated for assignment by the Mets on May 13, tested positive for amphetamines while pitching with Triple-A Tacoma. His suspension is effective immediately.
The 31-year-old, who had stints with Tampa Bay, Atlanta and St. Louis before going to the Mets, holds a career mark of 40-49 with five saves and a 4.67 ERA in 254 big-league appearances, including 88 starts.
