Although his .329 batting average in 1970 was only the 8th highest single season total in Angels history, it was high enough that season to win the American League batting championship. Alex Johnson remains the only Angel to accomplish that. In 1970, he had 202 hits (3rd most, Angels single season), 156 of which were singles, and was 8th in the A.L. MVP voting.
But Johnson was an angry clubhouse toxin and they got rid of him after a truncated 61-game injury-marred 1971 season. The good riddance they felt lessens the Batting Crown glamour just enough to keep Johnson at #51, and out of our Top 50.
