Shea Hillenbrand
First off, this guy's parents are fucking evil for giving him a name slightly less appealing than Hemmorrhoid Junior, so it is no wonder he is the biggest loose cannon in baseball clubhouses this side of Jose Guillen.
Second, this is easily the worst signing of the offseason and the worst for the franchise since the dreadful Steve Finley signing (to which I was adamantly opposed while the ink was still being blown on).
This is the STIFF middle finger to Dallas McPherson. Forget any talk of Juan Rivera's injury, it is Scioscia saying "F.U., D."
How Mike Scioscia can take a self-proclaimed "leap of faith" on an aging Gary Matthews Junior and turn a cold shoulder to McPherson, a guy whose only crime has been injuries he cannot control (but through which he has worked) ... it is frustrating to be a fan of the pick-and-choose partisan that Mike Scioscia has become.
(Cut to the dialogue between my consciousness and my internal organs...):
The days and nights of playing a fucked-up Frosty Steve Finley over better options ... ah the pain is all coming back.
(Back to conscious description of the future with Dingleberry, er, Hillenbrand):
Smacktalking Hillenbrand is going to kiss up to Mike and have no problem skating at 60 percent in this desperate clubhouse that abounds in cheap young bats who are held back by Scioscia's man-love of thirtysomething millionaire has-beens, or in the case of Matthews and Hillenbrand, Never-Were's.
In other words, the Hillebrand signing is a band-aid we don't need for a wound we do not have prescribed by a straw-grasping manager whose love of veterans has never been a component of the winning his teams have done.
We're not fucked yet, but we're getting there.

He is a perfect fit!
Per Elias: Hillenbrand has 133 walks in 3,538 career plate appearances, an average of one every 26.6 times up, the lowest walk rate for any active player (minimum 2,500 PA).

Smart move
If Hilly doesn't pan out, it's only 6 mill with a .5 mill buyout. Peanuts in todays market. If he doesn't produce, then he doesn't get enough ab's for a second year.
He put up decent numbers. As long as everyone gets an equal oppertunity to earn there position, and I believe they will, not a problem.
By the way, casey seems to be healthy! Check out johnnyangel101's latest diary. Maybe Hilly can produce comparable numbers to Riv 2006 (I was expecting Riv to join the 100 rbi club in 2007) at dh. If not, then goodbye.
The guy is a terrible defensive third baseman. I'm sure the angels are looking at him to be dh (especially if casey is ready at 1b).
Cheap insurance, if you ask me.

I 'm really cracking up (laughing) here
I really thought that you would be for this. I was acutally suprised at your post. My assumption is that your the "build from within guy" and don't want to throw the future away on a big (money) gamble. My new assumption is that your such a build from within guy, that you didn't want any signing that would mess with the young guys.
Assumptions can be funny if you don't take them too seriously. I really did crack up over my own assumptions after reading your post.

Y'all are looking at this signing the wrong way
However, imagine how angry y'all are now, and imagine how angry you would have been had Stoneman done nothing at all to respond to the loss of Juan Rivera.
With that in mind, remember Juan Rivera when you read this quote from the Sosh about the Hillenbrand signing:
"His bat is what we need now," Scioscia said. (emphasis mine)
As I've said before, Johnny Rivers's injury threatened to turn an already anemic offense into one that was not only nonexistent, but also turned the AL West playoff race into a question of whether the A's could make it past the first round for a second consecutive year.
Is Hillenbrand a malcontent? Yes. I would not be surprised if he challenges Mike Scioscia to a fight and is subsequently DFA'ed before October 1.
Is he a middling player at best? Yes, but right now even a middling player helps our struggling offense immensely.
What about his contract? It's not that bad; this move cost us nothing in terms of players, if there's something this club isn't wanting of it's cash, and it's only a 1 year contract with a CLUB (not player) option. If this were a $40 mil/3 year deal, I'd be willing to grab a pitchfork and find Bill Stoneman with all due haste with the rest of you. If he sucks it up this season or throws chairs or racial/sexual epithets at the guy with the locker adjacent to his, we can DFA him like we did Finley and Weaver the Elder.
Should the Halosphere be satisfied with this signing as the final move in Bill Stoner-man's quest for mediocrity and sloth? No, if he refuses to budge for a better bat than Shea I'll bitch a long with the rest of you.
Should he block Kotch, or Morales (or, God willing, DMac if he gets healthy) from at-bats? God no, but he provides options if Kotch/Morales or DMac fall through (especially Injury McInjuryson).
Imagine this scenario: No Hillenbrand, Rivera is out for eight months, Kotchman and Morales both hit a rut and DMac is at Mission Hospital on a 24/7 morphine drip. This is what the diamond at the Big A would look like:
C: Napoli/Molina
1B: Quinlan?
2B: Kendrick
3B: Figgins
SS: Cabrera
LF: Anderson
CF: Matthews Jr.
RF: Guerrero
DH: Um...is Izzy around?
A lineup whose only power threats are Vlad, Napoli pre-All-Star break, the grimacing shadow of a circa-2002 Garret Anderson, and the hope of a repeat of a Gary Matthews Jr. career-year looks pretty friggin' weak to me.
Hillenbrand allows us to temporary--note the use of the word, temporarily--fill any holes that may reveal themselves. Kotchman raking but DMac still aching? Stick Hillenbrand at third and hope he doesn't commit too many errors. Is Kotchman doing well and has Figgy transformed into his 2005 incarnation? Let GA take the field in left to his heart's content, and allow Mr. You'd-Better-Give-Me-a-Cake-When-I-Adopt-Another-Kid to DH.
Is Shea Hillenbrand the panacea for the offensive problems facing this team? Of course not. Is he a cheap bandaid for the holes? Yes, and this is where I disagree with the Rev, because these holes can show up and have a strong possibility of doing so.

Couldn't agree more
This can't in any way be compared to the Finley signing. Finley was much older and given two years of guaranteed money ($14M) when that was a lot of money for the market. This contract guarantees only one year, at less money than is currently being paid to back-of-the-rotation pitchers. It's fiscally prudent.
Also, it is absurd to believe that Scioscia will enable Hillenbrand to get enough ABs to guarantee his second year even if he underperforms. Hillenbrand needs 600 ABs to earn that second year. Finley only had 406 ABs in his disastrous '05 season.
Moreover, there were obvious reasons for Scioscia to be more patient with Finley. First, as was already mentioned, he was our best defensive option in CF. Second, he had been consistently healthy and productive for several years (albeit during the steroid era). Third, and most importantly, the team had invested so much in him that it was not easy to simply admit that their big signing was a huge failure.
That will not be the case if Hillenbrand underperforms or challenges Scioscia to a fight. It already has been pointed out that this is a one-year deal that essentially forces Hillenbrand to be on his best behavior and give it his all. No reason to think he will perform to a lesser extent than last season.
On that note, in terms of immediate impact, Hillenbrand sadly may be the second or third best hitter in this lineup. That's shocking to say, but his stats from last year (.277, 21 HR, 68 RBI in 141 games) look pretty comparable to our #2 big bat (GA hit .280 with 17 HR and 85 RBI in 141 games). Just something for all of you to keep in mind as you bash Hillenbrand.
Finally, a few comments on Casey and D-Mac. Hillenbrand does nothing to take a job from Casey, who owns 1B to the same extent that he did before the Rivera injury. If Casey is healthy and performing, he will be our 1B. As for Dallas, I disagree that Scioscia has treated him unfairly. The front office and management gave Dallas every opportunity to be the 3B in 2005. Last year, after he floundered in the bigs, he publicly questioned the team's decision to send him to AAA, saying I don't think there is anything left for me to prove there. Then, of course, he sucked. In my mind, Dallas has a hell of a lot to prove in terms of (a) his ability to stay healthy, (b) his ability to hit ML pitching, and (c) his maturity.
Just my 2 cents. In the meantime, have a happy holidays and cut the front office and management some slack. The market blew up this offseason and they were dealt a very unfortunate hand with Rivera's injury.

Perception vs facts
McPherson did not "flounder in the bigs" or "suck" last year, unless you consider a .478 SLG "floundering" or "sucking." The guy has absolutely demonstrated that he can hit major league pitching. Sure, he strikes out a lot, but his numbers are FINE despite them. Given regular playing time, his production could be even better. He can hit major league pitching just fine, right now.
As far as health - I've pointed this out several times elsewhere, but Dallas was not injured any more than Maicer last year, or anybody else. He was on the DL only ONCE, for three weeks. Otherwise, he was healthy enough to play about 130 games or so. It's not like he was in traction for four months. The FACT is that Dallas spent most of the season at Salt Lake, and then rotting on the bench in September.
As far as maturity, I agree. When Dallas complained last year, McPherson was not being given a chance at the 3B job in spring training, and responded accordingly (although he should have kept his mouth shut - I think we all agree with that). However, it's not like McPherson was violent or almost got into a fight with the manager :)
Regarding Hillenbrand - I don't think he's HORRIBLE...I just think that Quinlan is better, and we already had Q...and Q would accept his role.

Tell that fat pile of shit Schilling to shut up and start pitching again.
30 mil 3 year extension for Beckett? Classic. Shit I think he just gave up another homer.
The police escort for a pile crap like Mirabelli is classic.
Did you enjoy going sub .500 against the AL last year.
Don't even get me started on JD Drew.
You guys should be excited to have Hanley Ramirez, Freddy Sanchez, Cla Meridith, Annibal Sanchez, and Andy Marte ready to crack the bigs?
When was the last time you won your division?
Buckner........Ouch.
As for your comments on Tommy John Seibel, you must be as dumb as the rest of the racist pricks that fill that pile of shit you call Fenway. TJ surgery did not seem to slow Schilling, Smoltz, Gagne(for a period), AJ Burnett or anyone else that got the surgery recently for that matter. In some cases it has improved the pitchers velocity.

tell both your dads...
1.) "Team uniforms changed in 1997 as well. The familiar "A-N-G-E-L-S" spelled out on the jersey front was replaced with a logo designed by Disney Studios, being a stylized form of the team name with an enlarged angel wing to the left of the "A", on new pinstriped vest jerseys. These uniforms were universally ridiculed, being referred to as the "softball beer league" uniforms by Chris Berman of ESPN and as "periwinkle jerseys" by many Angel fans........
Then came 2002. The year began with the team scrapping its pinstriped vest jerseys after five years, reverting back to uniforms conforming more to the team's traditional uniforms, but now mostly red, with but a bit of navy blue trim. Significantly, the Halos' road jerseys now read "Anaheim"."
.....so that would be 3 times since '96.
2.) the sox set a season attendance record (2,930,588) last season while extending their streak of consecutive sellouts to 307 games since 2003. that was prior to these new '04 sox fans you speak of.
3.) the mentality that believes mathis and mcphersons' possible projections are worth blocking trades to acquire proven major league talent (ie; varitek), is the mentality that will keep your franchise dissappointing.
4.) sorry i missed #34. you loose track after sorting through 100 no names.
