2006 Angels Starting Pitching Preview/Rant

There is something that is really irrititating me of late.

Last season, the Angels' Starting Pitching staff RAKED.
By any (and every) measure, they were a fearsome, dominant bunch.

Nobody, not one motherfucker on the planet, predicted it.

But it happeend, and not by accident, and in spite of injuries to Kelvim Escobar.

So now since the Angels are not run by Mister Sabermetric Spock, everyone of these shitforbrain statgeeks is acting like the Angels' 2005 pitching success was an anamoly. They are practically pretending that it did not happen.

Wake the hell up and smell the coffee you perverse ignoramusi:
Colon, Lackey, Escobar and Santana = Your worst nightmare.
Colon, Lackey, Escobar and Santana = Ten ton truck crashing into you.
Colon, Lackey, Escobar and Santana = Bang, you're dead.

Add to this:
On-The-Way Weaver
Carrasco
Saunders
Lil' Weaver
Bootcheck
Gutcheck
Hipcheck, ATM-Check Cashing services, anything else you want to add, subtract divide or multiply, this team has the goddamn arms that YOUR TEAM JUST DON'T GOT, AIN'T GOT, ain't gonna get and will not get got nor John frickin' Gotti.

Got that?

Bud Black
I'm glad we still have Bud Black on the staff, i'd say that a great deal of this success we owe to him and it's good he didn't want a managing job just yet.

Here's hoping...
the bats gain some pop this year, so the pitching doesn't have to bail the team out as much as last year.

*Cough*
Nobody, not one motherfucker on the planet, predicted it.

Ahem:

This is a group I have high hopes for. Not Schilling-and-Unit high hopes, or even Schilling-and-Pedro high hopes, but the kind of 4th-starter-will-have-an-ERA+-of-111 high hopes that seemed to work out just fine in 2002. The main sources of recent SP ugliness -- Ortiz and Sele -- have been replaced by a quality innings-muncher (for a fraction of the cost), and there is good reason to expect improvements from most of the other starters as well, especially in light of a sure-to-be-better defense. [...]

The rotation is a marked improvement, and a strength. My worry is only that it won't be dominant enough in the post-season.

The 4th starter, incidentally, had an ERA+ of 112.

Angels vs. A's
Here's an in-depth comparison of the Angels' roster vs. the A's, beginning with the two teams' pitching staffs.  The writer/poster gives a decided edge to the A's pitching staff.

Wow, where were you?
Lot's of people including me were talking about the Angel strength and weak hitting.

The Angels have never been without good pitching for very long.  But it is the rare moments of good hitters that we remember.

Jeff Weaver - 02/10/06
The Rev's ironclad prediction that the Halos will sign Jeff Weaver might still come to pass . . .

'The Angels continue to dangle a short-term contract offer to Jeff Weaver, likely for one year and roughly $9million. But Stoneman said he would be content going to camp with veteran Hector Carrasco competing with minor-league pitchers, including Weaver's younger brother, Jered, for the fifth-starter job.

'"If we do it, then it happens. If we don't, we've got a good group of in-house guys," Stoneman said. ...'
