Panther of the Game:
Jered Weaver

Star-divide

The Pitcher Formerly Known As Lil' Weaver became the first rookie since Fernando Valenzuela to win his first seven starts. Weaver is now boasting a 1.15 ERA in 47 innings. To state the obvious, this is very Panther.

It is significant not only because it helps the Angels in this division race, but also because it adds one more shovel of dirt onto the grave of Irrelevance that is the Los Angeles Dodgers and their "storied" history, which is fast becoming "ancient" history.

Given how well Weaver has pitched, how do you feel today about his contract holdout? Was that $4 million signing bonus worth it? Is Boras still a bastard, or was he wise to advise his client that way?

HE was wise
to advise.

If I was a player, I would want Scott Boras to be my agent...

Boras
Is still a bastard.  Even he could never have guessed this kind of start for Weaver, and how many players does he up the value for that never materialize as expected?

by Neo8234 on Jul 23, 2006 5:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nah
What did he get that was extra?  Unfortunately, Rich Lederer's site got clobbered by spambots or else I would be able to mention that I predicted Weaver got $4M and no major league contract at a time everyone was figuring a low eight figures deal with a major league contract like the one Mark Prior received.
Fire Mickey Hatcher. An entire generation of Angels offense depends upon it.

Boras is paid
to maximize value for his clients.  He's damn good at it and I'm fine with that.  Let the market decide.

I didn't expect JrWeaver to be this good.  Seeing how it's turned out, I'm happy for everyone that they got the deal done, even with minutes to spare!

Amen
Scott Boras works for his clients, not vice versa.  Does he play hardball?  Absolutely, but we're talking MILLIONS of dollars here.  He does EVERYTHING in his power to get his clients the best possible deal he can.  If I'm a ballplayer, I would hire him in a heartbeat.

There's not a reader here who goes to his/her attorney or accountant and says,  "Just do my taxes (or related service), I don't care what the result is."  We all want the best result possible!  On the other hand, for some reason, when an agent represents a player, he is portrayed as "evil" - I just don't get it...

by johnnyangel101 on Jul 23, 2006 9:37 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because
there are times when it appears that Boras doesn't have his client's best interests in mind (particularly long-term interests)...he's always looking for the biggest payday for himself.

In the case of WTY, for example, he almost cost Jered another full year of his career, just for an extra million bucks in his first contract...a difference he will quickly make up.

Good job Jered.
I recall how the Angels were extremely bearish on Jered subsequent to signing him before the deadline. The radio people in LA were criticizing him fairly harshly.

Considering that the Angels hard-balled him after they drafted him (fully knowing that other teams were passing on him due to signability), as well as the Angel's dissatisfaction with his brother's performance, Jered has reflected a surprising level of maturity that bodes well for the team.

For more years, For more years!

If you're such a fan
how come Wally's Baseball-Reference page goes unsponsored, and at a bargain price of only $35, too?

I rember arguing with the Beane-dippers in March
... about how the Angels' Triple-A pitching was, compared to theirs, "stocked." They just laughed and laughed at me. Also, the Loiaza signing was better than the Big Weave signing. Good times.

The main effect of two More Years of Loaiza
is that it will probably help Seattle stay competitive in the division...

Why isn't Salmon
playing more?  It seems to me, he should be one who needs to be in there.  GA is really going in reverse.

Let's hope he starts platooning w/ G.A.
It always takes Scioscia too long, but he did manage to ease G.A. into the DH slot. Now that that's done (hopefully for the rest of the year), hopefully he'll get around to noticing that Anderson vs. Salmon against lefties is no contest at all:

.189/.225/.253
.290/.395/.594

Failing consistently to recognize the nose on his own face is one of the most frustrating things about Mike Scioscia's managing. Meanwhile, it's Timmy's swan song, so why not let him stick his neck out once in a while?

100% agree
I commented on this on Rev's "Adenhart and Mathis" diary.

We keep talking about a power bat
when one is sitting on the bench every day.

In April/May, when Salmon was getting more playing time, he hit .273/.365/.491 in 110 AB's.  Then, all of a sudden, Scioscia stopped playing him.  Why?  In the meantime, he keeps trotting out Anderson day after day after day...

I mean, let's a least give Salmon a CHANCE...if he fails, he can't be any worse than Anderson's production, can he?

by johnnyangel101 on Jul 23, 2006 10:38 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

fine with me...
as long as they don't leave Kendrick on the bench to do so.  Kendrick should be in the hitting lineup for the Angels from now until he retires.  I don't care where he plays on defense.

hmmm
i'd very much like to see salmon instead of anderson on DH, when Salmon has a 6 LOB game like Anderson i'll take back this statement.

Re: Angels Radio Announcers
Rory Markas had a great line, end of the 3rd, just after Lil' Weave set down the entire lineup in order: "Jeff Weaver is 6-0. He was 4-0 when they sent him down. If he wins THIS game, maybe they will release him"  A Classic!

take it you mean Jered??
and they shouldn't give Stone(d)man any ideas  ;-/

the line
wasn't quite like that...  they were talking about the call that was changed from a fielder's choice to a hit (when cabrera threw home).

"Jered Weaver was 4-0 when they sent him down last time.  If he had thrown a no-hitter today, he might have been released."
