A Rod to NYY deal nearly done
John Sterling said on the Mike and Mad Dog show that A Rod was very close to signing a 275/10 deal with the Yankees. He also said on a scale of 1 to 100 his confidence was at a 101 with this news.
Looks like we are going to have to look elsewhere for our bat.
UPDATE:
The new discussions are believed to be centering on a 10-year contract for about $280 million. They are also likely to include a big incentive package that could put the total package well over $300 million

Regarding the ARod sweepstakes:

Fascade anyone?
This is a Boras move, I will bet my life savings on it. He'll sign with the Angels for 10/285 million dollar deal. 15% Deferred until 2020.
how much is in your life savings
shall we go for $35
LOL
Albertos man,
This smells of ploy
This is not our fault.
Still, one wonders if Moreno's "bluff" pushed the Angels further to the edge of the Boras/A-Rod radar to begin with. Yet another instance, then, of Moreno needing to take his own advice and keep his damn mouth shut. We know what Bill Stoneman would do in a situation like this--sit back on his hands and close up shop for the winter. Let's hope Reagins is different.
Nonsense
Price we can afford?

$275 million

I'll give you five reasons
- Baseball has something like quintupled its revenue over the past 10-12 years.
- We have $26 million in contracts off the books for 2008, another $26 million or so coming off in 2009. That's two years of making no real difference.
- Arte hasn't increased real salary level in four years, during which time the value of his franchise has increased by something like 250%.
- We would almost surely have a club option to handle his 40+ years, and even if we didn't $27.5 million 10 years from now will be the equivalent of around $21.5 million then, after factoring in for inflation. We paid $15 million to Bart freakin' Colon last year, yet managed to live to tell the tale.
- What, are you the one signing the checks.
but
also, we have 1 good pitcher right now in the minor leagues. if santana or saunders(or both)dont pan out or if escobar or weaver go down to injury, we'll be forced to use free agency. Once again, 27 million a year plays a HUGE factor in all of this.
ive also read that this team's profit to expenditures isnt all that great. we're not the yankees, arte isnt making hundreds of millions off this team every year. signing a-rod would have required Arte to dip into his own pockets and the team would go into the red by about 15 million. Hes a businessman.
not getting this contract may very well be a blessing. in 3 years we might all be looking back at this thanking god it wasnt us.
now we just need to hang onto wood, howie and adenhart for the saem reasons above. Id rather take my chances with figgins/Dmac/wood than trade the future for cabrera

I mean to say....
My point
Now, if this were two or three weeks from now, or even the end of this week and the same thing were happening, THEN I'd DEFINITELY blame Reagins, and/or Stoneman's influence upon him.
Also, this from MLBTradeRumors.com
What a long way from Steinbrenner's "he obviously does not want to be a Yankee and we will NEVER negotiate with him now."
Bastards.
As much as I hate to say it...

Doesn't matter
This is getting old...
when
i wanted a-rod more than anyone when this all started but even i started to wonder the virtue of our team giving that much money to one player. we dont have the huge sponsors and TV network deals that the yankees do. arte is a great owner, dont ask the guy to go into the red every year just to have a-rod.
face it guys, we arent the yankees. $27 million to the yankees payroll is absolutely nothing. $27 million on ours(for TEN YEARS) is beyond a bad idea. i dont want to hear it either about GA and colons contracts off the books. back-ended contracts also grow each year, arbitration, extensions and inevitible free agent plugs also jack up our payroll. this team doesnt make the money to be spending $120-$130M a year. You have a team with the 4th or 5th highest payroll in all of baseball. lets not be babies and cry because our already great owner isnt willing to lose money for us.
OR you can have a-rod and see some of our great young players leave in free agency or have to get traded when we might not have the finances to extend them. We can be the Rangers or the Giants! COOL!!!

Or...
agreed...
Oh Shieze
"If the season started today, I like our club, when healthy," Reagins said. "I like our starting pitchers, our bullpen, and if we have a healthy Garret Anderson, Gary Matthews Jr. and Vladimir Guerrero, I think we're pretty good. I don't feel pressured to make a huge move, but if you can get better, that's what you want to do." Well, there goes our offseason.
hahah lovely
so we got vlad who is a DH now whether he likes it or not, GA who is also a DH, a recovering juan rivera, howie kendrick who enjoys getting hit in the hand, justin speier and his wacky viruses, ervin santana being unpredictable and D-Mac comin back.
yeah i like our chances too in the event we're healthy. unfortunately the odds of all that going right for a full year is about 981478327827352 to 1

Man
$275 million!? He already did $252 million in late 2000. Pfffft... There better be some massive additional incentive-based dollarage lurking here. Even Mr. October gauged this guy more towards $40 million on Old Skanks' Day.
BTW, Stoney's Tony said they did not extend an offer...
Yeah.
If the former, Boras may have finally run out of juice. Stoneman/Moreno got the better of him with WTY, and may have started a trend.
