A Rod to NYY deal nearly done

John Sterling said on the Mike and Mad Dog show that A Rod was very close to signing a 275/10 deal with the Yankees. He also said on a scale of 1 to 100 his confidence was at a 101 with this news.

Looks like we are going to have to look elsewhere for our bat.

UPDATE:

L I N K -to- S T O R Y

The new discussions are believed to be centering on a 10-year contract for about $280 million. They are also likely to include a big incentive package that could put the total package well over $300 million

We should have done it last year
but now we need to pull the trigger and sign Bonds on a 1 year deal.  He's actually the least amount or risk and we can keep our prospects, compared to our other options.  Let Wood, D-Mac and Chone fight it out for 3rd next year.

Fascade anyone?
Yes, a fascade.

This is a Boras move, I will bet my life savings on it. He'll sign with the Angels for 10/285 million dollar deal. 15% Deferred until 2020.

This smells of ploy
It just smells of trying to up A-Rod's price - my first impulse was to holler CALL AND SAY THIRTY, ARTE ... but that is what Boras wants...

by Rev Halofan on Nov 14, 2007 4:59 PM PST reply actions

This is not our fault.
Sounds like Reagins didn't even get a chance to stick his foot in the door before "Cynthia" pulled this stunt.

Still, one wonders if Moreno's "bluff" pushed the Angels further to the edge of the Boras/A-Rod radar to begin with. Yet another instance, then, of Moreno needing to take his own advice and keep his damn mouth shut. We know what Bill Stoneman would do in a situation like this--sit back on his hands and close up shop for the winter. Let's hope Reagins is different.

by Clutch on Nov 14, 2007 5:29 PM PST reply actions

Nonsense
If he signs w/ NY for a price we can afford, then it is our fault, in every way. The dude opted out of his contracted during Game 4, rubbed the Steinbrenners' nose in it ... the only way he comes crawling back for good is if he didn't get an equal offer from Arte. And if that's true, I'm hella-pissed.

by mattwelch on Nov 14, 2007 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

Price we can afford?
I know that 275/10 isn't within our price range, but is it a good business decision? Ten years?

Nov 11th
I don't think we could even speak to free agents until Nov 11th? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

by anaheimisnotla on Nov 14, 2007 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

um
everything ive been hearing on the radio is that a-rods wife factored heavily into this decision. its not like he contacted the yanks and said hey, wanna bid? he contacted them HIMSELF to meet in person to talk about coming back. he wanted to play there and clearly either had remore over turning down their original offer or his wife doesnt want to leave new york.

hes been a free agent for about 48 hours. its not our fault he changed his mind. this clearly didnt have anything to do with dollars.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 14, 2007 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

$275 million
is not a price we can afford.  That's four times the value of the contract that Vlad signed for.  There is no reason to think that we can afford to pay A-Rod this much money, perhaps not now and certainly not ten years from now when he will be 42!

by DChalofan on Nov 14, 2007 10:04 PM PST up reply actions

I'll give you five reasons
  1. Baseball has something like quintupled its revenue over the past 10-12 years.
  2. We have $26 million in contracts off the books for 2008, another $26 million or so coming off in 2009. That's two years of making no real difference.
  3. Arte hasn't increased real salary level in four years, during which time the value of his franchise has increased by something like 250%.
  4. We would almost surely have a club option to handle his 40+ years, and even if we didn't $27.5 million 10 years from now will be the equivalent of around $21.5 million then, after factoring in for inflation. We paid $15 million to Bart freakin' Colon last year, yet managed to live to tell the tale.
  5. What, are you the one signing the checks.

by mattwelch on Nov 14, 2007 10:16 PM PST up reply actions

but
all that money that comes off the books, youre ignoring the extensions, arbitration salary and necessary free agent spare parts. this isnt like we get a-rod, lose 5 or 6 players and are a-ok. The reason this team is competitive is because of the balance of free agents and young talent. A-rods salary certainly becomes a factor when youre trying to extend frankie, lackey, vlad and down the line kotchman ,kendrick, weaver.

also, we have 1 good pitcher right now in the minor leagues. if santana or saunders(or both)dont pan out or if escobar or weaver go down to injury, we'll be forced to use free agency. Once again, 27 million a year plays a HUGE factor in all of this.

ive also read that this team's profit to expenditures isnt all that great. we're not the yankees, arte isnt making hundreds of millions off this team every year. signing a-rod would have required Arte to dip into his own pockets and the team would go into the red by about 15 million. Hes a businessman.

not getting this contract may very well be a blessing. in 3 years we might all be looking back at this thanking god it wasnt us.

now we just need to hang onto wood, howie and adenhart for the saem reasons above. Id rather take my chances with figgins/Dmac/wood than trade the future for cabrera

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 14, 2007 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

I mean to say....
... the Yankees had no exclusivity here. It's a free market for A-Rod, and if you believe the evil MSM, we just didn't compete.

by mattwelch on Nov 14, 2007 5:50 PM PST up reply actions

My point
Is that I don't think Reagins really got the CHANCE to give numbers. He met with him last week, sure, but until YESTERDAY MORNING (Tuesday 12:00A.M.) he couldn't discuss the financial aspect. It's entirely possible that in the meantime A-Rod became dead-set on re-negotiating with the Yankees, and maybe that was his plan all along.

Now, if this were two or three weeks from now, or even the end of this week and the same thing were happening, THEN I'd DEFINITELY blame Reagins, and/or Stoneman's influence upon him.

by Clutch on Nov 14, 2007 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

Also, this from MLBTradeRumors.com
"Covert talks have been going on for days, apparently."

What a long way from Steinbrenner's "he obviously does not want to be a Yankee and we will NEVER negotiate with him now."

Bastards.

by Clutch on Nov 14, 2007 8:19 PM PST up reply actions

As much as I hate to say it...
Clutch is right. If A-Rod gets signed by the Yankees, it will not be Tony Reagins' fault. Our new GM has likely not even had a chance to talk to Boras or A-Rod in any meaningful way. If these reports are right--that A-Rod and his people have been in contact with the Yankees far before the Tuesday window--there is absolutely nothing Reagins could have done.
The Hunt for a Red October ...and please keep telling Clutch to chill!

by cardinalwraith on Nov 14, 2007 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

Doesn't matter
From 12:01 we could have been making a better offer. We weren't. And now we're thinking about trading Kendrick. Good thing we saved money!

by mattwelch on Nov 14, 2007 10:01 PM PST up reply actions

This is getting old...
The Angels should already have their plan together as to how they are going to convince A-Rod to come to LA. Now maybe they need to expedite things. But, the bottom line is they still need to make it happen. It's getting a little old to be beaten out of all the best free agents every offseason. I think we've got Stoneman Jr. at the helm.

by 10 27 02 on Nov 14, 2007 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

when
did anyone get REAL evidence that the organization was willing to spend that kind of money on a-rod??? Reagins said he was interested but when have we ever heard arte or tony this offseason say he was willing to go towards the 27-30 million mark? no. and they know that. they werent going to make promises they knew they probably couldnt keep.

i wanted a-rod more than anyone when this all started but even i started to wonder the virtue of our team giving that much money to one player. we dont have the huge sponsors and TV network deals that the yankees do. arte is a great owner, dont ask the guy to go into the red every year just to have a-rod.

face it guys, we arent the yankees. $27 million to the yankees payroll is absolutely nothing. $27 million on ours(for TEN YEARS) is beyond a bad idea. i dont want to hear it either about GA and colons contracts off the books. back-ended contracts also grow each year, arbitration, extensions and inevitible free agent plugs also jack up our payroll. this team doesnt make the money to be spending $120-$130M a year. You have a team with the 4th or 5th highest payroll in all of baseball. lets not be babies and cry because our already great owner isnt willing to lose money for us.

OR you can have a-rod and see some of our great young players leave in free agency or have to get traded when we might not have the finances to extend them. We can be the Rangers or the Giants! COOL!!!

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 15, 2007 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

Or...
...we can sit on our thumbs and watch the entire free agent market pass us by, yet again, on the wishes and hopes that all those fancy names down at AA will assemble into enough major league talent at the same time necessary to fill all our holes. We can then be the Kansas City Royals. COOL TOO!!!

by Stirrups on Nov 15, 2007 9:45 AM PST up reply actions

agreed...
if we don't pounce on this right now and offer him at least the same amount of money or slightly more than the yanks then it's arte's/reagins fault.

by thejd on Nov 14, 2007 5:56 PM PST reply actions

Oh Shieze
From LA Times today:

"If the season started today, I like our club, when healthy," Reagins said. "I like our starting pitchers, our bullpen, and if we have a healthy Garret Anderson, Gary Matthews Jr. and Vladimir Guerrero, I think we're pretty good. I don't feel pressured to make a huge move, but if you can get better, that's what you want to do." (http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-cabrera14nov14,1,6152700.story?coll=la-headlines-pe -sports&ctrack=3&cset=true)

Well, there goes our offseason.

by Clutch on Nov 14, 2007 8:21 PM PST reply actions

hahah lovely
"when we're healthy"

so we got vlad who is a DH now whether he likes it or not, GA who is also a DH, a recovering juan rivera, howie kendrick who enjoys getting hit in the hand, justin speier and his wacky viruses, ervin santana being unpredictable and D-Mac comin back.

yeah i like our chances too in the event we're healthy. unfortunately the odds of all that going right for a full year is about 981478327827352 to 1

Don't forget that Kotch is going to be on the DL at some point as well. Hasn't been a year in the minors or bigs when he wasn't.

an aging, declining power hitter is not the key to automatically winning in the post season.

by retrohalo on Nov 14, 2007 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

Issues
Let's not forget that Miguel Tejada would be a guy moving from SS to 3rd bringing not only his declining production but 13 mil a year for the next 2 years. Also would have to trade for him. Baltimore will ask for big pieces as well not as many pieces but I am sure some of the same names.

by Angel Aviator on Nov 15, 2007 10:38 AM PST up reply actions

i will not believe the AROD deal...
to the yankees until the ink is dry. remember back when was traded to the yankees, it was almost a lock he was going to be traded to the red sox. same type of coverage, espnnews had very similar coverage...AROD to boston deal nearly done... this could be a shrewd negotiating ploy with wizard (boras) sitting behind the curtain and getting $ from AROD on the side.

by thejd on Nov 15, 2007 8:30 AM PST reply actions

wishful thinking
i dont think anyone is going to get involved now that the starting bid is a contract that can go beyond $300M and the yankees are involved. Nobody is outbidding them now that this has gone public. Therefore, nobody will even try.

we gotta move on

by ihearhowie2.0 on Nov 15, 2007 8:57 AM PST up reply actions

Man
if al-Rod does this deal for anything less than $300+ million, I'd consider it a grand failure for all parties involved.  C'mon, all these people have reputations to maintain -- AROD(TM), the über-sports dynasty, little lovable Scott Boras?

$275 million!?  He already did $252 million in late 2000.  Pfffft...  There better be some massive additional incentive-based dollarage lurking here.  Even Mr. October gauged this guy more towards $40 million on Old Skanks' Day.

BTW, Stoney's Tony said they did not extend an offer...

by Bilko 420 on Nov 15, 2007 9:22 AM PST reply actions

Yeah.
This is getting fun to watch. Either Boras is getting totally pwned, or this is some master stroke worthy of Machiavelli.

If the former, Boras may have finally run out of juice. Stoneman/Moreno got the better of him with WTY, and may have started a trend.

by Stirrups on Nov 15, 2007 9:48 AM PST up reply actions

Bor-Ass
Owned?

5% of 270M on a 10 year deal, when NO ONE ELSE, would offer more than 8 years?

I wish I could be owned like that.

AROD's wife is the reason...
he will stay in new york. whenever you hear "i sat down with my wife" forget about it the guy gets screwed. don't forget AROD was spotted with the she-male looking thing in toronto earlier in the year. mrs. AROD had a favor coming her way. boras doesn't get his 5% or she gets half.
