Whew! ... Miguel Tejada is Not an Angel

Orioles Shortstop Miguel Tejada was traded to the Houston Astros for Luke Scott and a grab-bag of prospects early Wednesday.

In July of 2006 the Dominican All-Star was all but signed, sealed and delivered to the Angels in exchange for Ervin Santana and Erick Aybar. The trade was nixed by meddling Orioles owner Peter Angelos.

Despite the animosity that developed between the two clubs, with Angels owner Arte Moreno breaking the Bill Stoneman vow of silence behind the scenes and openly complaining about the broken deal to the media, some reports had the Angels revisiting the trade this offseason with a lesser package and as more of a "Plan B".

With Tejada an assumed top suspect in the Mitchell report (although it is likely to focus on HgH and Tejada was tied to the steroid Stanozol when outed by former teammate turned rat Rafael Palmeiro), his chances of being an Angel probably hinged on whether or not his name appeared in the soon-to-be-released "Book of Souls", as Moreno is adamant about running a clean, steroid-free ship in Los Angeles of Anaheim.

With no Tejada possibilities for the Angels, it appears that Chone Figgins is the de facto Angels Third Base Man, with perennial prospect Dallas McPherson waiting in the wings to provide the Halo lineup the elusive pop for which it has long been searching.

You know I'm glad too
I'm still wanting to see the Angels make one more deal or sign one more name to give us a big bat, but I believe the sentiment of the board, like mine is that he isn't the guy to invest into.

Tejada is not the problem
It is the fact that teams expect four or five prospects in return. With the Angels having above average prospects, it just makes a deal so unlikely, unless were looking at Johann.

McPherson it is........
He Rev in the Latino Angels Diary you asked if Wood and McPherson counted because they were playing in Mexico.

I know Wood was playing in Mexico but I cant find anything about McPherson. Is he playing in Mexico or is he going to play later on?

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We still have untenable surplus
Two perfectly good starting outfielders is one too many for a major league bench, especially when you've got Kendry Morales competing with them for scarce DH AB-leftovers. There will be a Trade.

Notes:
Plethora of outfield options

This leads, naturally, to the conclusion that at least one and perhaps several of those outfielders will be packaged in a deal.

no complaints here
I feel the current crop of available players does not warrent losing any of our top prospects. I feel more than comfortable with figgins and maybe a resurgent mcpherson at third for this year and if a great opportunity presents itself next year, we'll look at it.

why force the issue now when the right opportunity might be there just a year later?

gary matthews was a desperate move that filled an apparent move and now hurts us with the torii hunter signing. Had we waited, we wouldnt be restricted to only infielders as power hitting targets.

Lets wait it out.

Morgan Ensberg?
I know he's not that good, but maybe a short term option if he gets non-tendered tomorrow, and have Figgins start at SS?

by ponusbaum43 on Dec 12, 2007 11:48 AM PST reply actions

please no
i can confidently say id rather have maicer izturis in our lineup than morgan ensburg.

10-15 home runs is not THAT important if all the other at bats are painful to sit through.

He was a disaster to too many of my Fantasy Teams - do NOT do this deal, Tony Ray-Gun.

Dallas McPherson
Nothing would please me more than to have D-Mac come to Spring Training completely healthy and competing for a spot on the ML roster. I don't believe McPherson has a shot of starting--that would leave Figgins without a position and he is going to be in the lineup everyday. But I'm a glass-half-full type person, and I still think D-Mac could make a solid contribution to the Angels in 2008, even as a bench player.

I want Dallas to rake in Spring Training, thereby forcing the Angels' manangement to have to make a (tough) decision about who stays and plays during the regular season.

though probably not realistc
We should expect him to be sent to the minors and play as often as he can comfortably and build his strength and timing w/out pressure.  Maybe he comes up late June/ early July and it allows management to evaluate our needs.  I just don't see us losing the west, so being the optimist, I think we have the luxury of using the season as a measuring stick of our chemistry and needs

Unbelievable - DMac not an option
ANAHEIM -- The Angels will not tender a 2008 contract to infielder Dallas McPherson, thus making him a free agent. This announcement was made Wednesday by Angels' General Manager Tony Reagins.
McPherson, 27, missed the entire 2007 season due to an injury. McPherson was placed on the 60-day disabled list March 31 and activated Nov. 13. Originally selected by the Angels in the second round of the 2001 free agent draft, McPherson owns a lifetime .247 average (89/360) with 50 runs scored, 19 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs and 45 RBI in 117 games. He has appeared with the Angels in parts of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons. McPherson has been on the disabled list three times in his career (2005, 2006 & 2007), missing at least half of the 2005-2006 seasons and all of 2007.
Stop swinging at balls out of the zone!

tejada
Glad to see him go to NL. We need another HR hitter. He doesnt need to be 35+, but someone who can hit 20+ is necessary. Per the previous power upgrade chart...it is too optomistic. The catcher position will not produce 18 dingers, nor will Kotchman.

I prefer Wood
Anyone notice D-Mac was a bit of a deer in headlights at the plate? Wood is a little less experienced, but seems to have more poise. He's the better defender too. And who here thinks McPherson can go more than a few seasons without another injury cropping up?

And yes, I too am glad we avoided the Tejada pitfall. I'm still in the Khalil Greene camp, or even better would be Johan for a pitcher and a handful of outfielders.

The Mitchell Plan?
Bag of crap

The Angels, thought to be the best fit, never showed much interest, while the Astros were clearly the most aggressive suitor and offered the best package.

"Nobody knows for certain how these young players are going to evolve, but if you get five, you start playing the percentages, quite honestly," MacPhail said.
