Hot A-Rod to Angels Trade Info
The LA Times and Riverside Press Enterprise are both reporting that Jered Weaver will start the season on the disabled list, but it will be a short stay.
Weaver is penciled in for his turn in the rotation on April 12. His April 6th start will be taken by Dustin Moseley.
After reheating the A-Rod to LAA rumor mill yesterday, what is shocking is that neither outlet is putting 2 and 2 together:
Moseley is getting the start over Carrasco as part of an audition for a trade to the Yankees. Stoneman and Cashman have reportedly agreed on a three-tier wait-and-see:
1. Audition Moseley
2. See if the boo-birds flock on A-Rod and how Boras then responds to a trade proposal (as Rodriguez can ultimately veto it)
3. Assuage Boras by adding Jered Weaver to the deal, as WTY in Yankee Stadium = Visions of future big bucks to tempt Scott B.
4. Yankees get Weaver, Moseley and Jose Molina for A-Rod.

hmmm
on its face the trade looks good but something feels really bad about it. i think we can wait and try the kids in this instance rather than go the arod route. if anything wait until he opts out.

Trade Jered for that 35HR/120RBI Pariah
This is a no-brainer trade, in my humble opinion.
Can Weaver really follow up this year better than last? Is Weaver going to follow his brother's career path? Has Boras pumped up WTY so big in order to get that big bonus from the Angels; so big that Jered can never fulfill the expectations? That's a lot of pressure and a lot of expectation. I think his career as an Angel goes down from here (but I am a pessimist)

And don't even MENTION the brother argument. Baseless crap.

It is a pessmist's view...
For me, personally, I just like to set my expectations lower so that when things suddenly do go well, I feel better and am genuinely excited about it. I like being proved wrong and having people tell me, "boy you were all wrong!" I love that kind of banter! Rather than going, "shoot, Weaver's gonna go 30 and oh this year" and then he gets lingering shoulder stuff going on and ends up 7 - 9 a la Jason Dickson or something and then it is a hunt to find whose shoulder I can cry on...
I swore after the heartbreaks in 79, 82, and 86 we would never win one, never even get to the series. I had resigned to the fact that I would never see a title in Anaheim. But, lookie here, what a nice surprise 2002 was. I had no, no, no expectatations that we would win that year. None. I just went to the park several times a month, like I usually do every year, and was entertained watching my favorite team play baseball. Then the magic started happening.
I will never become like a Yankees fan and expect to win the title every year. I will cherish and enjoy an entertaining 2nd place division finish as much as I would a trip to the World Series. I will continue to support the team win or lose. I never supported any other team but the Angels, nor do I plan on being a fan of any other team ever.
I kinda miss the days of being able to walk up and buy nose-bleeders and then play dodge the old fart ushers/usherettes to get to the front row of the box seats. But, it is a different brand of baseball we are watching now.
In summary, Weaver had a hell of a freshman year. I hope and pray he will do great this year and further down the road. I attended his first pro game at Elsinore (Quakes at Storm), saw him give up his first professional hit in that outing (to Fernando Valenzuela, Jr. in case nobody here knew) saw his first start in Anaheim (even got free Hooters' wings that night, but talked the girls into letting me keep the ticket stub). I wish him the best, but my pessmistic nature tends to think that he will be figured out this year by smarter and more prepared hitters and will be hit hard.
My opinion.
Thanks for your understanding.

I smell bullshit
- A-Rod can opt out of his current contract after this season, and by all means will.
- If we trade for A-Rod, we inherit his contract and face the possibility that he may opt-out of it after this season, meaning that we trade Weaver and a host of others for a year's rental.
- This club has all the money in the world and can throw it at A-Rod and Boras the moment the former exercises his opt-out clause.
- This club has shown an incredible unwillingness (warranted in this case) to trade young arms for sluggers, no matter how great and no matter how likely they are destined for Cooperstown.
This rumor is nothing more than that, and we will ride out the season then wait to try and buy A-Rod the moment the last out of the World Series is recorded.

AROD for Weaver
My guess is Brandon Wood, Scot Shields and/or Frankie and Bartolo Colon. Remember, Woods can't field and strikes out as much as Glauss, Shields has been great, but so is Arod, and Colon is near the end of his contract and is a definite unknown. Anyhow, I extremely doubt the Yankees would give up that right handed bat for any reason with no replacement bat in sight.

I'd do it
- Weaver's not Johan Santana and a lot of scouts say his second time around will not be nearly as pretty.
- If we can get that opt out eliminated, Arod is still one of the BEST players in baseball and has consistently shown he's in shape, healthy, and ready to play.
Bottom line is that while Alex may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer ("therapy can be very therapuetic"), he's a decent human being and one of the best baseball players I've ever seen.

Weaver & Johan Santana
What I may be reading into this, is that the Angels may be thinking that the "minor injury" to Weaver especially at his young age may be a sign of more injuries to come, so why not take the chance and trade him for a Super Star.
And if they do get A-Rod and his huge contract, I "WOOD" think that it would shorten the stay of O.C. so as to make room for Brandon Wood.
by Rex DaKine Budler on Mar 21, 2007 9:14 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not so sure about this
Now we expect Weaver is not going to be able to put up that kind of ERA every year, and A-Rod was having probably his worst season and should bounce back. So going forward, A-Rod is more valuable.
But is he $27 million more valuable? I don't think so. I'd rather wait, get A-Rod as a free agent after his opt-out, and have Weaver winning games while Alex provides his run support in 2008.
by RallyMonkey5 on Mar 21, 2007 6:22 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well,
However even I had already been wondering the past month or two if his second go-around would measure up. It did seem that a couple of teams got to see him twice and those that did hit him much better. This isn't to say I think he'll be a total bust, but more that 11-2 and 2.56 might look more like 14-11 and 4.00 by year's end.
The other fear I have is in regards to our rotation. This puts tremendous pressure on Colon to come back strong and on Carrasco as well. Also, I could see this resulting in us ending up rushing Adenhart up to the big A too soon.
So, irrationality put aside, I don't think this is necessarily a bad idea, assuming we can erase A-rod's opt-out clause, though I do have serious concerns that I think we have to understand prior to making this move. Stoneman is smart enough to have already considered these, though. I was looking forward to having the best pitching staff in baseball this year, however this would balance out the offensive side quite a bit.
...though I'd rather we just shipped them Jones and Hensley and Molina instead...

That rotation with A-Rod in the lineup easily doubles our chances of winning the World Series.
Plus, Weaver is due for a down year/sophomore slump. Already hurting, he wont be close to what he was last year.

This would be great
Hitting is more consistent than pitching -- Weaver was great last year, but there's no guarantee he'll be as good as we all think he can be. Plus, that injury doesn't scare anyone here?
A-Rod may be a choker, but his regular season hitting would help this team get to the playoffs -- something that's not a guarantee right now. You can't win it all if you don't get to the playoffs.
