Does Anyone Like Jeff Kent?

Read This Horse-Crap:

"They pitched well, and we didn't take advantage of opportunities," said Jeff Kent, who drove in the Dodgers' only run. "Yeah, it's the Freeway Series, sellout crowds, and half the stadium were our fans, which was cool. I'm sorry, but the best way we can look at it right now -- because we're big-picture people -- is that it's just three games."

A open letter to Mr. Kent:

As far I could tell, half of the stadium was not Dodgers fans....also may you also recall your fist-pumping  base hit in Game 6 of the World Series and what did that lead to?  How many errors did you have this weekend, Jeff?

Let me know when you win a big game buddy.

The arrogance of Kent is appalling...and yes, I do not like Jeff Kent.

NO.

Long Answer:
Not even his mother

Yeah, I like him
Hall of Fame 2Bman who didn't have his first full year until 25, his first big year 'til 30; total economy of motion on both offense and defense, and in his quotes (including this one) almost always exudes a dude-going-about-his-business vibe. Unforgivable mustache.

The Dodgers were just utterly humiliated in a three-game series against the hometown rivals. Whaddya want from him, tears?

Kent can play the game
though not a solid HOF candidate (see today's Jaffe in today's BP which compares him unfavorably to Grich), he's a very solid ball player, and his teams alwyas have done well too.

i'd certainly rather have him than a friendly sort who hits .220 with little power.

Not a Subscriber
Could you recap it without violating any copyright or subscription issues?  I don't doubt that Bobby Grich has pretty good HOF credentials (I've read several pieces over the years so advocating), so I'm more interested in why he thinks Kent isn't HOF material, or how he is inferior (other than fielding, where Grich thoroughly kicks his ass).

Jaffe's take on Grich/Kent
Jay Jaffe has his own statitical system to evaluate HOF candidates, JAWS. In it, Grich ranks as the 8th hightest 2B and slightly higher than the average 2B in the HOF, ahead of Ryan Sandberg, Jackie Robinson, Bill Mazeroski, Nellie Fox, Craig Biggio among others. the question came about from an Angel fan who was doubting Grich's credentials who pointed out Grich has a .260 lieftime average and under 1000 RBI. Jaffe said hitting for average was the ONLY thing Grich didn't do well and that everything else he did great and that all added up to a complete player who's worthy.

Kent was ranked 16th which isn't as good as Randolph, Whitaker, Biggio or Grich who all aren't in the HOF yet, though Kent may pass some of them before he's through.

Grich over Jackie Robinson is ridiculous
And I say that as a one-man Grich-for-HoF band. Four of Jackie's five seasons at 2B where better than any one of Grich's 16.

And Biggio combines a higher peak and better longevity.

Grich, Biggio, Jackie and Jaffe
Jackie does have a higher peak then Grich and (surpringsly to me) a higher FRAA, but Jackie's career stats are lowest among any other HOF 2B, and Grich has higher batting stats. in the ones Jaffe uses (BRAA and BARR).

As for Biggio, he is immediately behind Grich in the rankings and is still playing so it's easy to anticipate he'll pass him. Again suprisingly though according to Jaffe, is Biggio's peak is lower than Bobby's.

As a final note, the 2B immediately ahead of Grich is Rod Carew.

You might recall there's a reason...
... for Jackie's low career totals.

As for BRAA and FRAPP and SPLATT, I just dunno. I like Win-Share seasons a lot, and by that measure (peak and career) I don't see how you could make a straight-faced argument for Grich over Biggio. And Kent's 2000 was a height Bobby never quite climbed.

I figure both he & Kent are in the 12-15 group of all-time 2Bmen, in Billy Herman's neighborhood, and ahead of a bunch of HoFers. But in the top 10? Don't think so.

i definteily agree with you
i'm just reporting out Jaffe's analytical method and where they all fall out.

One thing that did surprise me a year or two ago was hearing Grich had some merit to the HOF, well by gollly, you and whoever else that have been promoting it are right.

From yesterday's article: "Grich fell off the ballot with just 2.6 percent of the vote in 1992, his first year of eligibility. That was a tough ballot to crack, one that saw Tom Seaver and Rollie Fingers elected, while future inductees Orlando Cepeda, Tony Perez, and Bill Mazeroski received considerable support, and Veterans Committee warhorses like Tony Oliva, Ron Santo, Dick Allen, Joe Torre, and Minnie Minoso had their followers as well. Hell, Vida Blue, also new to the 1992 ballot, stuck around for four years, while Grich got sent home before lunchtime. "

respect, but not like
I respect Jeff Kent, but he's an ass.  I've followed his career for a long time (I lived in SF during his lengthy stay with the Giants) and he's always been a surly jerk.  And let's not forget the incident with the Giants where he lied about breaking his wrist; he claimed it happened while washing his truck when, in fact, he broke it racing motor bikes (I think), a violation of his contract.

Me too
I really have no basis to like or dislike the guy; I know next-to-nothing about him personally.  I don't know whether he's a decent human being, or how he treats his mom.

But he's a no-doubt-about-it Hall of Famer, and as a ballplayer, I think he gives it his all each and every night.

Plus, he stood up to confirmed asshole Milton Bradley, which earned him points in my book.

read Jaffe today at BP - not a HOF sure thing
again, an enlightening piece with respect to Kent's credentials, especially in compartison to our own Bobby Grich.

considering the Giants level of play
when he was there, which included a trip to the WS in 2002, i think the SF fans will look back at him fondly and overlook the wrist incident.

that's false.
not a single giants fan likes jeff kent.

what??
i dunno - maybe they like being in 3rd and 4th places since he left, being a less than .500 team, and seeing the Dodgers being a 1st place club ever since he left??

If he had a super thick mustache...

I like the Porn Stache
I like that he got hurt popping whellies in on a dirt bike in spring training.  I liked when he Bonds used to try to kill each other a couple times a year.

I do not like him though.

I'm giving Figgins a big F U.

Who needs Baghdad Bob when you have Kent
First, Jeff lied a few years back as to how he got injured (uhhh, I was washing my car/motorbike whatever), then we find out the actual cause via a little media sleuthing (I be doing wheelies galore, then oops, wipeout my wrist ouchy).  Now he lies about the size of the Dodger crowd at the A (try 10%, if that).  Looks like he has a job awaiting him in as a White House Press Sec'y.

Am I the only one here
who swears he's been pulled over for speeding by Jeff Kent at least a half dozen times?
