Especially when the bases are loaded. A little self discipline would really help because there isn't anything in the minors.

This is why you build a team on OBP, not AVG

Light Up That Halo! ...and tell Clutch to chill!

by cardinalwraith on Jul 24, 2007 8:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Um, that's not entirely true
This is why you build a team around AVG and OBP.

The best teams in the majors all have guys with great averages and great OBP numbers.

You can't win the World Series with a bunch of guys who can't put the ball in play but have a great OBP.

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." - Sir Winston Churchill

by WeaverMania on Jul 24, 2007 8:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, but that's like saying
in order to have good team, you need an excellent pitching, a solid bulpen, an efficient defense and a consistent offense. That's great, but that's the ideal team.

A team that emphasis AVG, like the Angels, are prone to bad cold spells when the bats cool off. If they're not making hits, they're grounding or flying out instead of getting on base with walks.

That said, scareduck is right, if you take OBP to its extreme you have guys who can't bring baserunners home.

Light Up That Halo! ...and tell Clutch to chill!

by cardinalwraith on Jul 24, 2007 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course, the flip side of this
is listening to the A's fans bitch when their team strands a zillion runners in scoring position because they can't get that big clutch hit.

by ladybug on Jul 24, 2007 8:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And beating the Cards, to boot
It would be fun if the Cubs made the postseason.  That could still happen, though it makes for some weird cheering sections.  Last weekend, with the Cards playing the Braves, Helen was rooting for the Cards on the theory that the Braves are closer to the Wild Card than the Cubs.  I think she ought to be rooting for the Braves, because the Cards are still a threat for the division.

His .280/.321/.440 line against LHP
should not get him significant playing time.

Morales has a .375/.375/.665 line against lefties this season yet got sent down.

Figure that one out.

Quinlan has 81 plate appearances against lefties
this season. You know how many walks he has? 5.

That's horrible. That should not get him played.

Willits for ROY

by 101halo on Jul 24, 2007 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd still take that small sample size and use it
Think about it. How do we know if that small sample size is really true or not? You play the damn guy against some damn lefties instead of a guy who hasn't done it against lefties this season. Scioscia is playing Quinlan based off of last year's performance (.326/.356/.536) against lefties and not this year's performance (.280/.321/.440) against lefties. That's not right. You play who's getting the job done this season, not last season. Kendry Morales was getting it done this season against lefties. It might be a small sample size, but you play him based on that small sample size to see how he does in the bigger picture. You don't just sit him down because it's a small sample size. You're hurting yourself in that instance.

This is a little bit beyond
a small sample size.  He's 3 for 8 against lefties.  That's two games.  How about we trade Brandon Wood for Octavio Dotel, because he was 1 for his first 8 or something.  .125 hitter.  Ditch that shit.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jul 24, 2007 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You keep saying a small sample size
That's your only argument. Who's fault is it that it's a small sample size? Scioscia's. How do we know, for a fact, that these guys (Wood and Morales) are this good or this bad? We don't. That's why they need more time. But, rather than do that, we send Morales down and keep Wood on the bench for almost ten days before he plays again. No wonder he hasn't done much tonight, he's been rusting on the bench without doing anything. We'd all be rusty. But, he keeps playing Izturis at 2B without Izturis doing anything to deserve it lately. He finally plugs Figgins in at 2B but it's too late since Wood is as rusty as an old nail. Wood needs more time, as does Morales. They need more at-bats. They need more time in the field. They're not getting it. If Scioscia is going to be a pretentious dick and not play guys who have a future with this team, then send them back down to Triple-A so that they can actually play instead of rotting like a corpse out in the cold. It's getting fuckin' old. And, it's time people start realizing it. I feel that I'm the only one, though.

I KEEP saying what?
That's my first post on this topic.

And yes, obviously Scioscia would have to give Kendry Morales more at-bats for it not to be a small sample size.  My 5 year old sister could tell me that.  But why does Kendry DESERVE those at-bats right now?  Because he went 2 for 4 one day, and 1 for 4 the next or something?  OK, let's say we give him a game against lefties and he throws up an 0 for 4 spot.  He's now batting .250 against lefties.  He sucks, send him back to the minors, booooo.  It's absurd for you to try to mask Kendry's 3 for 8 as "HE'S HITTING .375 OFF OF LEFTIES!".  That's all I said, and it's true.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jul 24, 2007 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My mistake ..
I mistook you for the other guy, sorry about that.

Anyways, I understand the point that you're trying to make but wouldn't it be better to see if it were true that he was that good against lefties rather than wondering if it were true for the rest of the season? He couldn't be worse than Quinlan right now, that's for sure.

Maybe he should be getting everyday AB's
at Salt Lake.  He's just not ready for the Show, and he won't get there blocked by Figgins at third.
Santana's where he belongs. Now it's Bart's turn.

That catch
is one we all used to make in LL.  We would run, catch the ball, and then dive.
It is way overdue Arte. #5 needs to be retired by the Angels.
