The beauty of GA
I'm cursing him for lollygagging on a foul ball along the left field line one inning, the next inning he is the mostest awesomest guy ever.

Wow!
This eclipses Vladdy's 9 rbi effort against the Red Sox.

I will say that I figured his recent performances were indicative of the rest of his career and then I read Scioscia talking about GA needing to get dialed in and whaddyaknow?

Let's hope it's a trend.

Been watchin games like you! Lazy is not an "apt" term. I think you want the type of guy who runs into a wall, breaks his fluckin face, and misses a chunk of the season all so you can say "that guy has balls"! Booooooooo! GA plays the game the right way,and any any of the examples that you have brought up hurt the Halos chances throughout his career??? Remember, perception and reality, perception and reality. Case closed!

He's so lazy that when he only had 1 extra base
hit in the world series and could only scape a bloop to move figgy over to third in game 6.

Even when he won the HR derby, he only hit like 6 home runs in round 1. Can't you tell he not really trying.

I know...
You're kidding, but yes that's the impression a lot of people have.

And they're wrong.  The thing about GA is that he plays the outfield so smart he doesn't have to run to make flying catches, so he just looks "lazy".

interesting
from this site:

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_rbi1.shtml

"The American & National League record for runs batted during a game are listed above, but posted below are batters with at least ten RBIs in a game -- a feat rarer than a perfect game or four home run game..."

We've had quite a season, what with Figgy's Spectacular Night against the Astros, and this is another excellent performance.

Eat crow
Jonah has changed his tune. In today's Page 2, Jonah addresses his earlier comments on GA:

1 GARRET ANDERSON'S HOMEMADE HUMBLE PIE
Struggling for most of the season, the Angels' cleanup man earned some harsh criticism from some know-it-all baseball columnist whose name rhymes with Zonah Zeri. A day later, Anderson laid waste to the Yankees' pitching staff, racking up four hits, two homers and 10 RBIs in an 18-9 blowout win.

This post was a great idea Rev., and thanks
G.A. is deserving of the props. It has always bothered me how much crap G.A. takes from Angels fans (and pseudo fans). He gets abused both in cyberspace (particularly on this site) and especially at the Stadium. I know cause I've sat next to the people verbally abusing him on many occasions.

Of course I invariably come to his defense. Most of the people who criticize his defense know nothing about baseball.

As for his bat, he is the ALL TIME Angels leader in hits AND rbi , yet one would never know it by reading the majority of posts about him here.

I barely believe that I was the only die hard to vote G.A. the # 1 All-time Angel when Rev. conducted his poll awhile back. I love Timmy but G.A. is at least as deserving and therefore should at least have garnered a few votes for number one.  I actually don't think many even put him in their top five, which is just ridiculous to me.

Rev., Perhaps you remember the number of top five votes for G.A.?

Just ran the numbers before B.R. can update them:

.233/.284/.439

Certainly a far cry from clutch, but it's a good move in the right direction to go from a .564OPS with RISP to a .723OPS in just one night.

This spinoff of the diary is the most sane thing
I have read on this thread.

GA has one night in a long and mostly unproductive season and everyone goes bonkers!

What we NEED is for GA to "produce" for the next 2 months at a pace similar to 3-4 years ago.  Then he will be "earning" his place in our cleanup spot.  His presence as our #4 hitter this year has been a joke!

The past week's worth of line drives is a great start...KEEP IT UP GA!  GA, HK, CF (if not seriously hurt), and Kotch stay hot we win the whole thing come OCT.

Stop swinging at balls out of the zone!

A-Rod is being talked about on Angels Live
And on ESPNEWS, the "Breaking News" box in the corner says:

"Anderson (LAA): 10RBIS
Rodriguez (NYY): 2HRS"

Guess what assholes.  10RBIs happens less often than a perfect game.  It's one of the most rare things in the history of the game.  Two home run games happen many, many, many times in a season...probably damn near once every day in which every team players.  When one of those is a solo shot in the 9th inning of a blowout, it doesn't belong in the same goddamn SENTENCE, PARAGRAPH, PAGE, OR EVEN BOOK as 10RBIs.

http://kotchatthebat.livejournal.com/

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 21, 2007 10:55 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's GAs day
"They don't want to accept us," Anderson said. "They want to see superstars, players they're familiar with. They don't even have to be good players -- it's the perception that matters. "We put a bunch of good players on the field that people don't seem to recognize. Look at Chone [Figgins]. The year he's having [batting .341, and .410 since May 31], imagine the attention he'd be getting playing on some of these other clubs. Here, he just goes about his business. "Fans can tell you everybody who plays for the Red Sox and Yankees, but they'd have a hard time identifying our players. On the West Coast, they know about the East Coast, but it doesn't work the other way. "It boils down to who gets air time. You watch the TV highlight shows, and they break down everything the Red Sox and Yankees do. For the West Coast teams, they show two highlights and it's over." Anderson takes it beyond Anaheim and a team largely known as "Vladimir Guerrero and Co." "Even when [Ken] Griffey [Jr.] was playing in Seattle, and A-Rod when he was young, they didn't get that much national attention, really," Anderson said. "Edgar [Martinez] was one of the best hitters in the game, and a lot of people didn't know it. It's all about the exposure. "That's just the way it is. Those are the facts."

Agree "Kiss of Death"
10 Rbi's is a rare and major accomplishment. Baseball is indeed a team sport, but tonight is G.A's night.

And Rev., why did you take G.A out of the Headline? You had it up and then changed it. Of course he gets the panther, but I think he deserves to be the HEADLINE rather than the Angels largest regular season win over the Yanks.

As "Kiss of Death" said, it is a rare and noteworthy accomplishment...

Notice below the picture, it has the information on Garret's game.  Not only should the Posada story NOT be the top story PERIOD (sorry, your little rumors about what the Yankees may or may not give to some catcher as a contract is not a top story), but it shouldn't be dominating over some small-font nod to one of the biggest single games for a hitter in the history of the game.

Good News/Bad News
Good News: GA rakes it in during a career night!
Bad News: Now we will never shut up all these GA supporters.
Good News wins.

It's even more retarded
Given that GA also had two homers. Now if Vladdy heats up and Shields finds his stuff again we'll be good to go in October.

ESPN
at least they had the guts to give GA's 10 RBI's the top play of the night.
With win-win-win, we all win!

Found last second tickets on ticketmaster
This morning.

I cannnot even express how lucky I feel to have been present at this amazing performance.  I'm stunned.  Awed.  What a class act with his comments after the game regarding his performance and his curtain call.

This was special.  Wow.

Willits for ROY

reminds me of June 2, 2004
Vlad's 9 rbi game against Pedro and the Red Sox - that was the only regular season game i went to in Anaheim that year - the luck of the draw!

i also saw both home play-off games in '04, and a game at PetCo and a agame at Coors.

ESPN headline (no joke)
"Garret Anderson added some personal intrigue to the AL playoff races Tuesday night with 10 RBIs in the Angels' 18-9 win over the Yankees. But Anderson's two HRs were matched by A-Rod."

and gAy-Rod's team got beat the heck up tonight and lost.

suck on that ESPN retards.

seriously, how bad do they want to pimp their own hype machine?  disgusting.

way to go GA.

{coming from a dude who in frustration called him out on Angels postgame radio show for not making a play costing the game in centerfield in 2000 and then got cut off by the radio man and mercilesslya vilified as some sort of racist (???) because I criticized an Angel player - I still maintain GA never belonged in CF - great LF'er.    proud of the dude tonight for sure!}

hahahaa!
yeah, especially since I never made a comment about the color of his skin!   nobody listening to the radio postgame shows understands criticism, let alone baseball strategy, so I'm not even sure why I tried to vent in the first place.

seriously though, that was 7 years ago - can you possibly remember that?  it was a game against Detroit if I recall correctly that was lost in the 9th, the opposing team taking the lead on a gapper that GA misplayed.

mea culpa.  I was frustrated.  and I care.
silly me for wanting the Angels to win.  ;)

I was a Flipping Fool
I was watching Cape Fear with my wife on AMC and flipping back in-between, so here were my thoughts:

7:55 p.m. - Just finished watching "Big Love" on HBO On Demand;
Game: Back-to-back doubles and GA taking out Molina make it 7-1 in the second - Cool, Kelvim's got an easy night

8:17 p.m. - First commercial break
Game: Third inning - 7-5; Whaaaat?? Here come the Yanks

8:45 p.m. - Second commercial break
Game: We're still in the bottom of the 3rd???

After 9 p.m. - DeNiro is getting really menacing
Game: GA has HOW MANY RBIs?

10ish - My wife is waiting for the commercials because Max Cady has just slit Joe Don Baker's throat.
Game: Bases loaded and Fizz and Rex are mentioning how GA needs to go yard to break the Halo RBI record... What do you know? He does it! Reverse karma finally works.

10:40 p.m. - Cady goes down singing hymns and speaking in tongues and my wife is finally down off the ceiling
Game: 9th inning - 2 outs, ARod homers and it's 18-9 ... ahhh Just Another Halo victory

"And the Anaheim Angels are the Champions of Baseball!"

DowningRules
you were at the game.  Did they make an announcement right after Garret's feat to mention that he had broken the Angels' single-game RBI record, or did you have to wait to find out later?  Did it go up in lights on the boards and such?  What was the deal on that?

It took them a couple of minutes
And then they put up a congrats to him on the big screen mentioning the broken record.

To my new zit-faced best friend...
;)

as 101 said, they waited a few minutes, well after the curtain call.  I was standing there beer in hand counting and I only remembered 9.  Luckily the scoreboard flashed it very obviously in lights on both big screens right as my poor mathematics arrived at the number 9.  Then the crowd went bananas again.

You guys watching on TV had the benefit of Physioc talking ad nauseum about it prior to the salami.

As for my losing count, I was busy surveying the crowd, watching fights (only about 2 or 3 good ones, no cat fights this time like during the Sox series (darn)), and, oh yeah, trying to watch the game.

Not the greatest Regular Season Win
over the Yankees.

Didn't Grich hit a walk-off HR in 1979 in Anaheim that swept the Yanks and gave us all a feeling, truly, "yes, we can"?

THAT gets my vote for best reuglar season win over the Yankees - any one else remember that one? That is a storied game in the history of the franchise.

I think he meant
widest margin of victory.  I would bet it was when it was 18-5, but not at 18-9.

widest margin - EXACTLY
but I wanted to avoid having a headline that was longer than the article so I didn't go into exhuastive reasearch to qualify every assertion made therein said headline. Lawyerease lawyerese lawyerlawyerlawyer

I don't blame you at all
the only reason I even knew was because of the blog entry I just put up yesterday in which I had to sift through every box score for my stats.

THIS was the greatest
regular season win against the Yankees.
Box score

you'd have to remember in 1979 we hadn't won anything yet after almost 20 years. This sealed off a sweep of the Yankees in mid-July and was a dramatic victory - Grich belted a 2-run walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th on a Sunday afternoon and really gave the team a sense they were a team of destiny. They'd come back from a 4-0 deficit against Ron Guidry.

It also supports Matt Welch's recent column on his web site that Grich was the true AL MVP in 1979, as he had all 5 RBIs that day.

We can say Grich had a "Half GA" day.

Here's another long past Yankee game.
Check out this box score closely. Incredible. Tanana's sailing along into the 9th with an 8-0 shut out in NYC. and then ....
