RAT-A-TAT-TAT

Panther of the Game: Maicer Izturis

The Miceman cometh! On a day obsessed with rats and a game with contributions from just about everyone, the unexpected sucker punch to Curt Schilling came from the Mouse. And that helped exterminate at least one rat in anaheim!

Great hit by Maicer
But I think its K-Rod.  Thanks to OC, he had to get 4 outs in the 9th.  Great win.  Any Angels win is #1, but my second favorite thing ever is to see Boston lose.  Combining the two is icing on the cake.
If I went to war and could only take one weapon, it would be an HK47.

I was thisclose to giving it to Frankie, if it had been a 1 run lead he gets the P.

But he threw a change-up to Youk.  Stupid pitch.  He'll learn.

From my seats
it looked like he struck Youk out at least once, maybe twice, on that at-bat before the dinger. Ump was calling a strike zone adown to the ankles most of the night, but deferred to Youk over WTY during that at-bat.

PANTHER: Maicer all the way
Angels needed a lead at some point.  Otherwise the game would be tied at 2 and in extra-innings right now as I type.

lotta baffled hitters tonight
it looked like alot of batters didn't agree with the home plate ump's calls on balls and strikes.

as duckie pointed out in the game thread, he was a bit inconsistent, but i didn't think he was terrible.

nonetheless, both angels and sox batters looked baffled at a LOT of calls.

by yeswecan on Aug 6, 2007 10:25 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

umpire on gameday
On Gameday, he was all over the place, calling balls that seemed about 6 inches outside a strike and calling balls on the corner balls. He did it to both teams. The walk to Pedroia before the homer was not a walk.

by tanana40 on Aug 6, 2007 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Confirmed live
Beachbum Willy and I were baffled by the strike zone in a way we usually aren't. And the ump had quite a lot of late calls, too.

My question is -- was Mathis' tag from third legit?

by mattwelch on Aug 6, 2007 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

according to the rules
yes. from the MLB.com story:

"Catcher Jeff Mathis, 24, chased Schilling with a ringing double into the left-field corner, taking third on 26-year-old Reggie Willits' perfect bunt and scoring on Chone Figgins' sacrifice fly that rookie Brandon Moss juggled in left field, causing some confusion. The umpiring crew had it right, ruling that the runner can advance as soon as leather touches ball."

i'm assuming this is the play you're referring to.

by rbrianc on Aug 6, 2007 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

same thinking as infield fly rule
if the out counts as soon as the fielder has control of the ball, then he could purposefully juggle the ball while walking it all the way back to the infield. this rule prevents it, like the infield fly rule prevents fielders from purposefully dropping balls to create a double play.

Nice Game - Maicer 's - big hit - panther
Halo bats peppered hits and Halo pitchers, Weaver, Speier, Shields and Frankie kept the win.
This was a big win against a good hitting team.

The Umpire
I've never heard of tonight's ump before, although I'm not familiar with them all.  I was wondering if he's one of the guys they call up from the minors from time to time, when the regular guys are on vacation.  Does anyone know?

Actually, I just answered my own question.  He is indeed a minor league umpire.

Mice Tits all the way
My seats were two rows behind where Coco Crisp hit his just foul rip down the line and close to where Mice Tits hit his jack.

I didn't Tivo the game, but can you guys answer the following that was hard to figure out from the right field corner

  1.  Did Manny swing on the last pitch of his K before getting tossed?
  2.  Any idea what Manny said to get tossed so quickly?
  3.  Was that ball foul tipped when Lowell struck out and they got all wet again.
  4.  On the sac fly in the 7th, did Moss bobble it or did he have possession and then lost it in the transfer?

by swiss mcgee on Aug 6, 2007 11:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Nevermind
I'll look for the answers in the game thread.

By the way, I was in a den of chowds down in right field.  Two really drunk Boston fans were riding Vladdy all night, cussing him out and even flipped him off late in the game.  All this right next to a little 10-11 yr old girl wearing a Expos Vladdy jersey and a Vladdy Dominican Republic hat.  Real classy guys.

Boston= worst fans ever
They seriously have been the rudest bunch of asses  i've ever dealt with at any game.  2004, game one, nightmare on the field and on the hairy foul mouthed upper lips of a bunch of manly female chowder eaters in the right field pavilion will never be forgotten by this angels fan.

are you sure they weren't the rats?
how can you tell the difference??

by rbrianc on Aug 7, 2007 4:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

answers
  1. yes, the bat crossed the plate as he twisted his body around.
  2. i'm no lip-reader, but Hud said that manny repeated a nasty phrase to the ump after the ump asked him what he said.
  3. on reply, it looked clean. no tip.
  4. he bobbled it, but the rule says that as soon as he touches the ball, the runner can tag up, regardless of whether or not he bobbles it.

Red Sox
Argue third strikes more than any other team I've seen.  They are jacka$$es with an inflated sense of entitlement.  They think any pitch that they can't crush should automatically be a ball.  On the Ramirez K, he was trying more to get out of the way of the ball than to swing but there is no question that in doing so his bat crossed the plate.

5-2 for the season when i'm there
Pretty good record!

Must say, definitely the best game I've been to this season, had pretty decent 3B outfield seats.  Cabrera's play was the sweetest thing I've ever in a long time, and Mice Tits with the homerun?  Unfruckingbelievable.

Manny kicked out in the 3rd inning was HUGE (see:  Moss' bobble, Moss last out in 9th).

This game was sweet on so many levels.

Oh, and unlike last year, the red sox fans near me were actually respectful and knowledgable about baseball.  Not quite sure how I got that lucky, but it was pretty awesome.

P.S. I had an idea during the 7th inning stretch
Instead of shooting t-shirts out of those guns in the upper decks, shoot plastic wrapped rats.

Now that would be sweet.

Figgins = trade
I think now is the time to trade Figgins. Maybe Oakland would be willing to do a waiver wire trade in exchange for Mike Piazza.

We need power and Figgins hardly done anything to prove that he has learned anything over the last year or two. He may need to get benched or something.

Every time I watch the guy, all he does is get on-base and be a catalyst in the lineup.

He hasn't done as well on the field and the fact is that his .340 average doesn't work for the Angels. Neither does his .395 on-base percentage or his 30 steals this season.

without figgins
right now we'd be staring up into ichiro's anus...

by Rev Halofan on Aug 7, 2007 1:20 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I'm rooting for Ichiro and Magglio
because if Figgins wins a batting title we'll never be able to get rid of him.

if figgins wins a battle title
then why in the hell would you WANT to get rid of him?

that is the worst logic i've ever seen on this site, and that's saying a lot.

This is your assignment for the afternoon:

Find yourself a dictionary.  In fact, don't even get up, just go to dictionary.com.

Once you are there, type in the word 'sarcasm'.

After you've done that, apply it to Melvin's post.
