ChiSox Deny Any Recent Konerko Talks

Looks like Doug Padilla's "source" is not White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams, who FLATLY DENIED any discussions with the Angels about anything since the winter meetings.

Not a direct article.
It's citing the Daily News article, rather than the original sources.

I'll kill someone if the this tarde happens
Lemme get this straight... we'd trade Kendrick and someone else for Konerko, but we wouldn't do it for Cabrera? Right, Cabrera is only almost a decade younger and plays a position we could have used. This will go down as a Mo Vaughan type deal. We get him and then he breaks himself. Just stay with Kotch at 1st, move Morales to 3rd and Figgins to SS, leave Howie alone!!!

We would have done it for Cabrera
If you'll recall, we thought we had the deal done twice. The Marlins killed it both times.

Umm
Some Chicago radio station is reporting

Angels get:
Konerko
Crede

White Sox get:
Shields
Figgins
Ervin Santana
Jordan Walden

Someone please fire Reagins.

Umm
This is one of the EXACT trades proposed in the comments on MLBTradeRumors.

Those stations are really digging.

This trade is not so bad....
If we can lock up K-Rod... if Shields is gone, Spier will have to step it up. The rest of the bullpen is solid. I like having Mosley and Boot out there, along with Spier, K-Rod and keep Oliver as the lefty. It's solid. But we will have lost our table setter. I imagine it's going to be GMJ... but he's done it before so it's not God awful. We gained a power htting 3rd baseman and a legit power threat at 1st in Konerko. Hmmm, where in the hell does that leave Kotch.... poor guy is trade bait. I hate to depart with Santana as he has a huge upside but Saunders is a solid #5. Sorry, don't know who Jordan Walden is.

The best part...
We're keeping Kendrick. Let's face it, like Cabrera, Figgins had a career year and his trade value could not be any higher than it is right now. Shields ERA has been steadily going up the past few years, his innings have decreased, hits allowed has gone up, and his strike outs have also gone down. All these stats are going the wrong direction. He's still very effective, but these ststs make me wonder, How much longer can he perform at that level?

Like I said, seriously, everyone out there listen, we goy a power hitting 3rd baseman and a power hitting 1st baseman and we were able to hold onto HOWIE KENDRICK!!!

This trade doesn't thrill me as we're losing more core guys from our championship team and it's a loyalty thing, but we would be gaining a ton of offense. Now, and now only can we comete with the AL elite teams with all their power.

It's not happening
Sources other than a random Chicago radio station would have reported it by now. Besides, how does it make sense for Williams to deny the rumors, then make the trade less than twelve hours later? Reagins' a ninja, sure, but I don't think he's THAT ninja.

Paulie clearly in decline
Konerko's career year has brought a steady decline year after year. With Figgins in the last year of his contract a straight trade would be about right.

Au contraire
Though I wouldn't go out and get him unless he were (a) a free agent and (b) could play third base, Konerko is not exactly on the decline.

According to Baseball Reference, Konerko did have a career year in 2005 with an OPS+ of 136, but performance in 2006 and 2007 did not decline dramatically, checking in at 134 and 116, respectively. Yes, 2007's 116 COULD indicate decline, but it could also be an anomaly. He's still capable of producing around 25-35 long-bombs, which would certainly be an offensive upgrade over last year. There's no way the ChiSox would accept Figgins straight up, nor should they.

That said, replacing Kotchman and/or Morales with Konerko makes ZERO sense.

Where clutch?
I don't see that proposal listed anywhere on mlbtraderumors.

It's in the comments
On the Konerko topic, sans the last guy from us.

Konerko = Arthritis
When the Angels actually DID discuss this trade in December (when it wasn't such a slow news time that Doug Padilla didn't need to mention his unnamed sources) at the Winter Meetings, the condition of Konerko's arthritis had to have been discussed - medical records would certainly be swapped at some point - and if they were, Reagins probably ran screaming.

Konerko's decline is real, it is increasing, he has a chronic and accelerating arthritis if anecdotal evidence is to be believed AND MOST IMPORTANTLY he plays two positions (1B, DH) that the Angels are really deep at.

Kotchman or Kendry for half-a-million or Konerko for 12 million?

Vladdy and G.A. at DH or keep them in the field to split DH ABs with Kendry, Paul Konerko, Gary Matthews Jr. and Casey K. ????

Konerko is a 100% logjam and Doug Padilla is all hot air - thew fact that the L.A. Times has not even dignified these rumors with a mention is proof enough for me.

This is what I see
Some names being bandied about include Ervin Santana, Howie Kendrick, and Chone Figgins. Of course, all three would not be in the deal. The Sox also seek relief help.  Moving Konerko would mean putting Nick Swisher at first base, while Figgins could be the leadoff hitter the Sox are after.

I don't see anything about Shields or Walden.

This is one of the dumbest trade I can think of...
Period!  End of story!
Stop swinging at balls out of the zone!

What happened to this rumor?
It seems to have just died.  No trade I presume....

by DChalofan on Jan 7, 2008 7:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Konerko Who ????
Why would any Angel team executive trade for a guy that is entering the downside of his career. If we are going to pursue the position of first base then lets go for the kill and contact Atlanta regarding Mark T. They will never sign him when he is a free agent and we can offer alot of young talent to fill their holes without giving up Howie. This trade is just waiting to happen and we need to act on it before somebody else grabs him like a thief in the night, haven't we had this happen to us enough in the past.

Here is why
The Jocksniffers think "proven veteran" matters with guys in their 30s.

Hilarious!
