Kelvim Escobar to Begin 2008 Campaign on the DL

Do I even need to link to the story?

The Angels' medical staff is monitoring Myspascobar's progress on a conditioning routine after discovering that his MRI showed no damage. Kelvim Escobar will begin the season on the Disabled List and there is no timetable for his return until the staff can determine how he is responding to treatment and rehab.

This makes things easier for Joe Saunders and Ervin Santana and might make the bullpen wannabes in Spring that much more interesting. The Universe may be telling the Angels that if we got depth we may as well use it - if you want to get New-Agey about it...

There are two months until
opening day.

If MRIs aren't showing anything, doesn't it seem a little preemptive to declare him as starting on the DL?

Obviously they know something more, but it just seems a little soon.  For all we know, in 3 weeks time, he'll be fine?

I think they are using Weaver as an example
If you miss the early work, which he will, it is smarter to just maintain the pace of the program instead of playing catch up with an injured player.
Um.........

I find this whole thing to be strange
The MRI was negative, but I keep hearing that he might miss a significant amount of time.

From CBS Sports: http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/teams/report/ANA/10626985

--RHP Kelvim Escobar is likely to open the season on the disabled list due to a right shoulder ailment. He has been working to build up the joint at the Angels' facility in Tempe, Ariz.

Opening day is so far away...Maybe I am just stupid, but it doesn't seem like this is something that should take this long to recover from, unless it is more serious then the Angels have been saying.

This does not sound good
Hopefully Kelvim can recover quickly and be effective.  Perhaps this explains why management was unwilling to trade two pitchers away from our organization.

For all the complaints about Erick and Maicer, I am very glad that we made the deal to get Garland.  I cannot imagine opening the season with a rotation of Lackey, Weaver, Saunders, Santana, and Bootcheck.  At least we now have the depth to sustain this until Kelvim is ready to return.

Last time I check
Moseley had more starts under his belt than Bootcheck.

New Agey
Gotta love it...

What does Karma Ball have to say about Kelvim?  Is he about to go retro grade?

If Escobar's injury is NOT serious,
it could be a useful strategy to let him work it out slowly, keeping him fresh a month or two into the season so that he is at peak performance in September and October.  We have the depth....use it for maximum benefit.

In years past, we would die for a rotation of Lackey, Weaver, Santana, Garland, & Saunders.

It's never easy
With the Bedard deal finalized and Escobar hurt, the Angels are already off to a bad start.  I think the Angels during the off-season were aware of Escobar's lingering shoulder problem and are hoping the R&R route (rest and rehab) will do the trick.  Clearly, Escobar's shoulder was a mess last September.

DL
Escobar is guarenteed to be on the DL between 1-3 times each year.  So hopefully he's just getting it out of the way early in the season rather than at the end.
