Sunday's Angels Spring Training game broadcast relayed word of the injury to pitcher Ervin Santana's right (throwing) elbow. According to KLAA game broadcasters, the pitcher has a sprained medial collateral ligament.
This is worse than inflammation, worse than a strain of the ligament too. But it is not a tear. Resting things now will prevent a more serious injury. The Angels organization has a reputation for babying all pitching injuries, so this will be approached via long term franchise considerations.
HALOS HEAVEN PROGNOSIS: Ervin debuts May 15.
CURRENT ANGELS HEALTHY ROTATION DEPTH:
Lackey, Weaver, Saunders, Moseley, Adenhart, Loux, Santana (DL), Escobar (DL)
The likelihood of some of the Angels infield and outfield depth obviously springs to mind as a possibility for trades, with veteran Chone Figgins leading the way. But a more intriguing possibility could be Catcher Jeff Mathis, prized for his defensive prowess and still young enough to improve in the batter's box.
FINAL SCORE IN TEMPE: Angels 8, Giants 1 ... Nick Adenhart pitched 3 scoreless innings with 1 K, giving up 2 Hits along the way. Torii Hunter was 1 for 2 in his spring debut and both Reggie Willits and Juan Rivera had 2 hits apiece.
