TUESDAY ANGELS ROUNDUP: Jered Weaver Can't Contain Tigers, Trevor Bell Will Ring Again

Up next for Angels: Tuesday vs. Detroit --
John Lackey vs. Jarrod Washburn

Cabrera drives in five as Tigers hold off Angels -
The Angels' six-game homestand got off to a messy start with their fourth loss in five games -- they've been outscored 34-17 in that stretch. Their AL West lead dropped to five games on idle Texas.

Angels' Jered Weaver falls short on solemn night --
On what would have been Nick Adenhart's birthday, his friend is roughed up in a 10-7 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 Detroit Tigers - Los Angeles Angels -
Seven years ago, Jarrod Washburn helped the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim capture the franchise's first and only world championship.

Team Reports -
In 26 games through Monday's loss, Angels starting pitchers have a 6.06 ERA while averaging less than 5 2/3 innings per start. Those numbers even include two complete-game shutouts (one each by Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver).

Team Reports II -
With few other options, the Angels will send rookie Trevor Bell out for his next start on Friday against the Oakland A's. Bell couldn't make it out of the second inning Sunday in Toronto and has a 9.49 ERA after his first three big-league starts. But the Angels' only other real choice was to bring Matt Palmer out of the bullpen and put him back into the rotation. Manager Mike Scioscia is reluctant to move Palmer out of the bullpen, where he has become a valuable piece. Palmer's 2 1/3 scoreless innings in Monday's loss lowered his ERA as a reliever to 3.06 in 18 appearances.

Any way you slice it, Hunter a true leader -
There is no "C" on the front of his Angels jersey, but that's a mere, unnecessary formality. "We don't have an official captain," closer Brian Fuentes says, "but everyone knows who it is."

Angels sticking with Bell in fifth spot -
For now, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he'll stick with rookie right-hander Trevor Bell, who will toe the slab on Friday against the A's. Bell struggled on Sunday in Toronto, allowing six runs on six hits in just 1 2/3 innings in the Angels' 8-3 loss, but he will get at least one more turn in the rotation.

Abreu boosting teammates? - SweetSpot by Rob Neyer - ESPN
Is Abreu a miracle worker? We can't say that, really. Some of these guys would probably have seen more pitches this season anyway, due merely to natural fluctuation and maturation. We might also assume that Scioscia's and Hatcher's "renewed emphasis on plate discipline" would have made some difference, too, even without the addition of Abreu.

Interesting Neyer article from yesterday in case you missed it.

1965 - Moonlight Graham dies in Chisholm, MN. Graham played in one ML game, for the 1905 Giants, and did not get to bat. His character in W.P. Kinsella's Field of Dreams, later played by Burt Lancaster in the movie, made him a baseball household name.
1979 - Angel Don Baylor ties a club-record by knocking in eight runs during a 24 - 2 slaughter of the Blue Jays. The 24 runs the 26 hits are both Angels record.
