Retired for every team by Major League Baseball in 1997 to honor Jackie Robinson, a grandfather clause allowed any player already wearing that number to keep it. Mo Vaughn was the last Angel to wear #42 as a player.

In 2007, Gary Matthews Jr. wore it as part of a one-game tribute throughout baseball on the 60th anniversary of Robinson's April 15, 1947 major-league debut.
In 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 the entire 25-Man roster wore #42 as a tribute on April 15.
In 2010 relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez (aka "Wolverine", not to be confused with Frankie K-Rod) made his major league debut for the Angels on "Jackie Robinson Day" wearing jersey #42.
In 2015 relief pitcher Adam Wilk made his Angels debut on "Jackie Robinson Day" wearing jersey #42.
