Brandon Wood Designated for Assignment by Angels

According to the most reliable Tweeter on Twitter, Victor Rojas, the Angels have designated infielder Brandon Wood for assignment.

The next 72 hours will tell us all we need to know about the star-crossed power hitter's future with the organization. Any team in baseball can claim him. He was out of options this season and the Angels need to make room on the 25-Man roster for Erick Aybar who returns to the big club after a stint on the disabled list for a sore side.

While I was doing this proper write-up, the party got started as a FANSHOT here courtesy of 2ptsO'Booz.

It seems so long ago ... because it was, just a week past being seven years ago ... that Shredder Seitz was commenting on my old blog about seeing a skinny little prospect named Brandon Wood tearing up the Midwest League. How many greats could he ave been traded for. How many times did Bill Stoneman hold back handing him over as the ransom for a bat or arm that would have taken a postseason series for us in '04 or '05 when his stock was at its highest? Could something have come our way to add five wins and a division title to the 2006 club had we only parted with Wood?

We'll never know. Soon though, we may see what a change of scenery does for a kid. He is only 26. He hit 43 homeruns in 2005 playong for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. In parts of five seasons he compiled 493 Major League Plate Appearances where he hit 11 homeruns and had 33 total RBI. He walked 13 times and struck out 153 times as a major leaguer.
