Maicer Izturis Is Clutch, Jerome Williams Throws 1-hitter Angels Win 3-1

Maicer Izturis hits a clutch two RBI double in the bottom of the 8th inning and Jerome Williams has a potential no-hitter spoiled by a fan-interfered fly ball but makes 84 pitches over 8 innings to give the Angels a fighting chance to win tonight.

Who would have thought, prior to tonight's game, that Charlie Furbush matching up with Jerome Williams would be a "pitchers duel"? That's exactly what the fans saw tonight as both pitchers were dominant through the first seven innings. A solo shot by Trayvon Robinson in the Mariners 6th inning would be the only hit, and run, allowed by Williams.

Then the wheels began to fall off the Furbush bus as Erick Aybar reached base with an infield single in the bottom of the 8th. Alberto Callaspo, pinch-hitting for Bobby Wilson, drew a walk as Aybar advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch during the Callaspo AB. September call-up Jeremy Moore would pinch-run for Callaspo as Izturis stepped into the batters box and drove in a double to left-center field to clear the bases and give the Angels the lead for the first time in the game. A Peter Bourjos RBI single would extend the lead to 3-1.

A gutsy move on Scioscia's part to end William's night after throwing a hell of a game as Jordan Walden pitched a clean 9th inning to nail down his 29th save of the season.

With this win (and a Texas loss earlier today), the Angels are now 2.5 games behind Texas with 19 games left to play.
