Twins No Menace for Mr. Wilson in Angels Road Win

Final Score in Minnesota: Angels 5, Twins 1

There was almost, almost a 6-4-3 triple play turned by the Halo defense in the bottom of the ninth inning in Minnesota that would have forced me to rewrite that headline, and it would have taken something that rare to take priority over the fabulous Angels debut by C.J. Wilson. Despite 4 walks in 7 IP, Wilson struck out 5 and allowed only 1 ER and 3 hits. Imagine Joe Saunders at his A-Game peak, now give him more wicked movement and a put-away pitch and you have Wilson, a dominant lefty who allows a few more men on base than your fantasy league WHIP would like, but who lets his defense tie up the loose ends.

And tie them up they did indeed. Alberto Callaspo and Erick Aybar were stellar in keeping the batted balls "in play, out(s)". It makes for all the hot stove assumptions that the Angels might deal from their depth look silly to see the master Sothball plan of rotating players based on the likelihood of ball sin play at their position. It looks to be a rarity to see the Mark Trumbo experiment on the field in 2012 when C.J. is on the mound. In fact, an opponent's offense would have to take offense at it.

Catcher Chris Iannetta made a CERA (Catcher's Earned Run Average) push with Wilson on the mound ...and in stats that actually matter a little he had 2 big Runs Batted In (RBI) to give the Angels a big cushion, making a 2-1 lead in the 7th inning a 4-1 margin with a double off of Twins Starter Nick Blackburn.
