Final Score in Anaheim: Angels 9 ... Yankees 8
It was just another epic victory, the Angels seventh win in a row and a Johnny McAll-Staff emergency pitching performance by a gaggle of Angels relievers in support of a twelve-pitch back strain by starter Jered Weaver.
Here is my video analyzing what the game means to the team and its fans with an update on the severity of Weaver's injury...
The club reached the .500 mark in their 50th game of the season.
The team's seventh win in a row was magnificent. Magnificent Seven.
Bobby Cassevah made his season debut for the Angels in the most unlikely situation... top of the first, bases loaded and Robinson Cano at the plate, nobody out. We're not in Salt Lake any more, Dorothy. Three unearned runs would score and a sinking sensation was pushing Anaheim toward sea level.
Here is our Halos Heaven interview with Bobby earlier this season on his rehab assignment in San Bernardino, talking to Blast21Dave...
But it was the bottom of the first that stands as the defining moment of this 2012 season so far. While knee-bent slurping telecasters would have you believe that the Yankees are impervious, nine Angel batters stood up to puny Phil Hughes and his overpaid gang of has-been millionaires.
The Angels took the lead, scoring four times in a memorable Memorial Day thrashing of the old gray ladies and their fat transplanted fans. Every Angel batter had a hit in the game and the bullpen rode the post-roidal roller-coaster of Highlander power through some tough innings, but Bronx bats don't throw from the mound and Yankees pitching wouldn't survive the AAA Pacific Coast League.
It was a feast for the Angels in support of a limping Weaver. Jordan Walden pitched two innings for the first time in his major league career and got the win when Mark Trumbo hit a walkoff homerun to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Trumbo was a single shy of the cycle, with a triple that tied up Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher in a sweat and leather embrace on the warning track. They'll feel that in the morning!
The team's seventh win in a row was magnificent. Maginificent Seven...
