Rumors swirl that Zack Greinke is already close to signing a contract extension with the Angels. Here is my immediate reaction and analysis of the club's trade...
Peter Gammons pointed out that Jerry DiPoto has acquired Ernesto Frieri and Greinke without giving up a substantial piece of the pie. harkening back to his Joe Saunders deal, or should we call it his Tyler Skaggs trade, Gammons labeled DiPoto "The Mike Trout of General Managers".
Even with Erick Aybar hitting the disabled list with a fractured toe, Jean Segura was a year off from cracking the Angels infield at best. John Hellweg and Ariel Pena have middle of the rotation potential - and I would love to see them win the world series for Milwaukee in a year we are not the team that they are playing - but the added bonus of the Greinke acquisition is that the Rangers did not get him and that in their desperation to match this trade, the price in prospects may have just gone up for the Texas Leaky Tire of Anaheim.
And to what might have been, I am reminded of a classic "breakup song" by the Smiths that shares its name with the infielder we just broke up with...
Jeane...
I'm not sure what happiness means
But I look in your eyes
And I know
That it isn't there
We tried, we failed
We tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried
But you still hold a greedy grace
As you tidy the place
But it'll never be clean
Jeane
We tried, we failed
We tried, and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried and we failed
We tried
But I think you know
I really think you know
Oh ...
I think you know the truth
