Here is my video take on how the Angels with Mark Trumbo, Mike Trout, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson on the all star team all performing on a high level, are being perceived on a national level by a media that cannot ignore them anymore...
The way the sports media covers the Angels has historically been terrible to the point of slander. East Coast media epitomizes the culture of groupthink received opinion spawned in a tiny regional puddle and forever trapped in the greenhouse gas of an impenetrable bubble - no other perspectives or opinions ever get in and the same stale narratives forever drench the locals in a mist of narcissistic sewage. New York City is the biggest small town in the world and the locals there don't even realize that the nonstop self-congratulatory patting they give themselves on the back for living in the capitol of everything sounds as drawling backward as Jethro the hillbilly pickin' the banjo on the porch and singing about the love of his cousin.
So over the years the Angels have had various national media profiles manufactured on the Island of Manhattan by the media. Some have been flattering and some have been filtered through the haterade that every frozen sidewalk, polluted gutter of half-melted slush and humid summer of paralysis causes the east coast to scornfully insist that everything sharing these tortures of nature is infinitely superior to the great culture of the rest of the country.
Here is a timeline of the Angels, historically, in the National Consciousness as narrative:
- Early 1960s: Wild expansion team with playboy Bo Belinsky leading the way
- Rest of the '60s: Second fiddle to the Dodgers
- 1972-76: Nolan Ryan
- 1977-1985: Gene Autry trying to buy a championship
- 1986: Wally World
- 1987-'89: One Strike Away, maybe even cursed
- 1990 - 2002: Donnie Moore, definitely cursed
- 2003 - 2004: Rally Monkey Yankee killers
- 2005 - 2009: Vlad
- 2010, 11: Has-Beens
- 2012: TNT
The future looks bright ahead after tonight!
