Get used to Alberto Callaspo being around - the Angels have signed him to a two year deal for $8.9 Million. The club avoids an arbitration hearing to determine his 2013 salary and buys 2014, which would have been his first year of free agency.

Callaspo turns 30 years old on April 19. He batted .252 with a .692 OPS and accumulated 3.2 Wins Above Replacement. He was originally drafted by the Angels in 2001 but, still a minor leaguer, was traded to the Diamondbacks for Jason Bulger. Arizona traded him to the Royals after the 2007 season and the Angels reacquired him in July of 2010 in exchange for pitchers Sean O'Sullivan and Will Smith. Ironically, the pitcher acquired by the D-Backs for him, pitcher Billy Buckner, is a non-roster invitee to the Angels spring training this season.

If you haven't read ODD MAN OUT by one-time Angels minor league pitcher Matt McCarthy, there is a scene with a young Callaspo and Erick Aybar from their 2002 rookie league season that is as hilarious as it is shocking. Let's assume the Angels gave Callaspo a bit of a bonus for being so, um..., loose with his teammates in all areas of the locker room.

In 1,284 Plate Appearances with the Angels, El Callaspo has accrued 6.6 WAR, good for 43rd place on the all time franchise list. For comparison, that is just ahead of Carney Lansford, who had 6.5 WAR in 1,882 PA as an Angels and just behind the recently-traded Kendrys Morales who attained 6.9 WAR in 1,762 WAR under the Halo.
