With Jered Weaver's status uncertain going forward after he left Monday's game with a back spasm, the Angels have a few roster callup possibilities to replace him as well as fortify their bullpen in the process.
Mike Scioscia said after the game that there were contingencies in place but did not elborate on them. He said he hoped Weaver's bullpen session in two days would show the spasm gone and insisted that the assumption now is that The Weave will make his next start.
But resting him up for the stretch run with a stint on the DL might be the way to go.
The logic of placing him on the Disabled List now and skipping Weaver's next scheduled start (Saturday in Arlington) boils down to the All Star Break minimizing the number of starts missed during a stint on the DL. With the Six Man rotation in place after the All Star Break, Weaver could get off the DL to pitch on on July 23rd, the sixth game of the second half for the Halos.
A reliever such as Michael Kohn or Cory Rasmus could be recalled to Anaheim for the next few days in Weaver's place to give the bullpen some breathing room. Or the Angels could have Shoemaker pitch again on Sunday, an extra day's rest, and Michael Roth could be recalled as a spot starter (he has a minimum stay in the minors after being sent down recently, but not if there is an injury on the big club).
But right now the rotation for the final six games before the break appears to be:
TUE: Tyler Skaggs (night game vs. Blue Jays)
WED: C.J. Wilson (day game vs. TOR)
THU: Hector Santiago (night game in Texas vs. Rangers)
FRI: Garrett Richards (night game @TEX)
SAT: Jered Weaver or Matt Shoemaker or TBD (6:15 start @ TEX)
SUN: Could be Skaggs, Weaver, Shoemaker, Roth, Mike Witt maybe (Afternoon Sun blazing deep in the heart of TEX)
Suddenly we are no-panic bastion of depth! Do you see any other possibilities?
