8 Angels Runs Make Angels Magic Number 9

Shoebacca dominant in seventh straight Halo victory.

Ronald Martinez

Final Score in Arlington: Angels 8, Rangers 1

Albert Pujols hit his first triple since 2010 in the first inning. He was a home run shy of the cycle on a night Efren Navarro hit a two-run triple late to put a 4-1 game out of reach and Matt Shoemaker became the first Angels rookie EVER to win 15 Games in a season.

The Halos amassed 15 hits against a spinning roulette wheel of Rangers pitchers auditioning for 2015. And one can say the dejected Texas team has played hard in these first two games of the series, both close games until late inning floodgates open out of the visiting dugout.

The Halos are now a season-high 35 games over .500 at 90-55. They are the first MLB team to reach 90 wins. Their magic number to clinch the American League West is nine. Number 9.

Here is a sight though - Late in this game, with it pretty much in the bag, the camera was on Pujols in the dugout and the final in Chicago was flashed on the scoreboard. The White Sox had defeated the Athletics 2-1. Albert got giddy and smiled and raised his hands and had to much joy to be contained by attitude or game-faced peer pressure. Perhaps it was the only time he has looked, well, young, since signing with the Angels. It was a fleeting glimpse of that which these players all seek. And they seek it on our behalf so we should be pleased, proud and pumped.

When Pujols tripled in the first inning, Mike Trout had walked just ahead of him and became baseball's sixth player to have three 100-runs-scored seasons before his Age-23 season (Trout was 22 for more than half of this season, hence 2014 is his "Age-22" season). The other 5 are Buddy Lewis, Alex Rodriguez, Vada Pinson and Hall of Famers Ted Williams & Mel Ott. But ESPN will obsess about Derek Jeter tonight instead of Baseball's true superstar. Albert hadn't had an RBI triple since 2009 and had not hit a triple and a double in the same game since 2007.

So Light Up Your Halo and here is a little "Number Nine Dream" to drift off into the night ... WE KNOW WE CAN FLY...

First pitch tomorrow is at 5:05 PM.
