MondoLinks: The Farce Awakens

New, comments

The Farce is strong in Arte, but his training is not yet complete and this makes him a risk to us. We need a map. Our hero lies therein.

Quick show of hands: how many of you are now desparately searching about for someplace to gather and swap commentary about The Force Awakens and ask all your questions and talk about all your plot holes and giggle about all the fun you had???

Just think. 6 months from now when it will be safe to talk openly and not be a spoiler for anyone, everything racing around in your head will be old news. And everything will have some lame-ass patch-over by a 16-year old zelaot on WookieePedia.

But until then, enjoy some National Flashlight Day Links, Which is kinda cool since it is also National Look on the Bright Side Day. We are real lucky that these two things come when we are running over into the winter solstice, don't ya' think??? In other words, now is the winter of our discontent:

Elsewhere In Baseball

The Other Half: Just sayin'.  Some guys are probably in a much better place this year, and loving it. The Mariners, just to use but one example, were pretty close to their spending limit this offseason. Jerry Dipoto had rebuilt the roster and rotation with about 617,288 moves since joining Seattle as new GM. But then Hisashi Iwakuma fell back into their lap as the Iwakuma-Dodger deal fell through. Shit. Now Dipoto had overplayed his hand and run out of money and couldn't go back after Iwakuma again. Or maybe Dipoto thinks that he might be in a pretty chill place now(bold emphasis mine)..."Sometimes you have to get lucky and you have to have an ownership group that is as giving as this one seems to be. From Howard to Kevin to our ownership group, Nintendo of America, it truly took less than five minutes to get everybody on board with this one. It was very easy to communicate, and there was never anything but an 'Absolutely, let's go for it'...That part is rare, to have a group that is so fundamentally in line with what they want to do and the people that they trust."..........

Touchy, are we not?: Jason Heyward signs with the Cubs. No. Strike that. Jason Heyward chose the Cubs over the Cardinals. As in, how dare Jason Heyward turn his back on a franchise and fan base who are so lovable, so loved, and so worthy? Even the Cards manager Mike Matheny  has gotten pissy over the idea that any true believer baseball player would dare turn their back on such an illustrious blessing that are the St. Louis Cardinals. Heyward has been quoted as choosing the Cubs for, among other reasons, aving a good young core of players that will still be together 3 years from now. Matheny: "...I don't like it...I thought we created a really good atmosphere and he had to weigh what was most important to him. … We made a terrific offer. With all that being said, it comes down to what does a guy want?..."..............By the way, while on the subject of Heyward, it's worth linking to the notion that while the Cubs won the Heyward Derby, now they have to live with the risks. It happens..........

Dirty Business: The Blue Jays are going to roll out a new loos at Rogers Centre next season. They plan to switch away from plastic baseball and over to an all-dirt infield..............

What the Wookie?: Some beautiful women hitch up with a professional athlete and get the glamour and the celebrity. Others get cheap cosplay, hanging out with a dude in furry pajamas, and a free bucket of popcorn............

Setting Goals: Bartolo Colon and I have several things in common. For example, he gets bonused for pulling off miracles, just like me. Mine would be the ability to suck the entire mass of an active sun into a tiny hole on the side of an ordinary planet is less than 30 minutes. Bartolo's? Winning the Silver Slugger for pitchers in the National League for 2016..........

Scoot! Scoot!: If there is one thing you do not do within the hallowed halls of yankee Stadium, it would be to ride a scooter. Oh, the horror!..............

Curious Position To Be In: Matt Bush is a man who once drove while intoxicated and, while doing so, caused great injury to an onnocent person. For this he was put on trial, convicted, and sentenced to prison. He has served his time and is now a free man. You, as an Angels fan with some histoy here, might feel uncomfortable about this. But Matt Bush can play baseball. Heck, he was once a #1 overall draft choice! So shitfire, yeah, he got himself a minor league contract real quick. Good job on that, Second Chance Texas Rangers!.............

OTJ Training: Let's here more from MLB managers about their jobs. No, not more from Mike Scioscia. Apparently he doesn't have much to say. (He would probably make a pretty good Jeopardy contestant, however...)Walt Weiss comes across as an intruguing kind of guy, but that's just me: "I love information. The more, the better. And then you got to discern what’s usable and what’s effective, and that’s what we do.  We have some great people in our analytics department that are taking on more and more of a load. For example, we went from the team that shifted the least in baseball to, I think, the most in the National League in one year. It’s obvious there’s an impact there, and I’m using that information, and I’m open to that information. Yeah, like I said, it’s just more information than we had when I played. Decide what’s usable and what’s effective."...........

HoF: I love the subject matter of arguing back against those who rail at "the watering down of the Hall of Fame" by allowing "less-than-worthy" players in. But, honestly, who are these people that are making this argument? I never find them when I scour the Interwebs............

We Coulda Been a Contender! Oh, wait. We ARE one.: The winter is not finished. We still have a window for hope. We have done well, actually, and it's not like things have been a total bust so far. All our angst remains with what might be left to do, not what has been done. We are on the verge. A contender. We dont have a lock yet, but things could be a hell of a lot worse...........

Sports Biz: Aww. It pains me to alert you all, but ESPN is taking it in the teeth. Their ratings are down a whopping 10% year over year from 2014. I blame the Yankees and the Red Sox..........
