MondoLinks: All quiet is an AL West affront

New, comments

Angels bats are quiet again, right when they could be powering the team into the lead in the AL West.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Differentials. Oakland outscored the Angels over the weekend 12-7. And the Angels out-errored the A's 5-3. But hte Angels out-won and took the series, 2 games to 1. So all good, right? Right?

Nah. 3 errors is totally unacceptable. And 1 earned run in 18 consecutive innings of play is a reminder that too many guys are still in major slumps. In fact, over the past 20 innings of play the Angels have scored only 3 earned runs, and all on solo homers. You have to go back 21 innings to find the last time these guy boxed together some hits and manufactured an earned run the old-fashioned way. Considering that 2 of the next 4 pitchers these stone-cold bats are going to face belong to brand-new pitchers, guys who the Halos have never faced, and...ugh, they might be even more dominant against this "offense" than Sonny Gray.

Seriously. After this much of the season, this many guys hitting this poorly for stretches this long over and over again is no accident. Lessons need to be taught. Benches and Salt lake City exist for a reason. In the meantime, I can't call a team meeting or anything, so I'll give you guys some links.

Trout Porn: What skill of Mike Trout is the one that Little League players should aspire to duplicate? Hitting for Average, Speed on the Field, Hitting for Power, or Defense? One must assume that the tools of fielding and throwing are combined here. My vote is on that shit-eating grin. At that age, baseball should be fun............

Pujols Less-Than-Porn: Albert Pujols has been kickin' but the past couple few weeks. He is pushing past historical greats such as Mickey Mantle and Ernie Banks, ticking off on milestone after another. But all that has gained him is the reminder that he is measured against the Pantheon of Baseball, and Great Things are merely expected. So he is still being judged.............

C.J. WIlson lives large, but watches too much TV. Or, maybe, not enough? Wilson was pretty masterful on Saturday night. And in his post-game interview he, as he usually does, skipped the cliches. And out came the confession that he binged on Game of Thrones with his wife, and the experience left him drained. He actually wondered if would have enough to do his job. One must imagine that his mind was too wrapped up with dragons and zombies to be bothering him on the mound. Too bad the season is over...........

Collin Cowgill is missedand his rehab set-back is causing problems for Mike Scioscia. "Collin's one of those guys you don't really appreciate until he's not there. He does so many things for us, especially against left-handed pitching. And right now we're going to have to try to create some depth in our roster to fill the void that's there because he's banged up."  It's tough to believe that this offense misses a guy who is batting .180 / .231 / .295. But there you have it............

Merry-Go-Round: Matt Joyce was benched Sunday, a sign that Scioscia finally has come around to the notion that Matt Joyce is not going to come around. That was an idea that lasted only 7 innings, with Joyce ending up taking back over left field from Efren Navarro in the 8th, and batting 1.000 for the game by going 1 for 1..............Trevor Gott was called up, and made his MLB debut in the top of the 9th, needing just 7 pitches to take the A's out in order, including his first strikeout............C. J. Cron went back down to AAA again, and Daniel Robertson came up, taking over center field late as a sub for Kole Calhoun and grounding out in the 9th with his only at-bat..............

Whew! 1st-round pick Taylor Ward has already been signed, and he did so for $1.67 million. That is $364,000 below the slot max of $2.034 million. So Arte saved some money. Mission accomplished. But before anybody makes the mistake of thinking that all that money is going to allow the Angels to go running out and outspend the Yankees or Dodgers or Blue Jays on an Eddy Martinez or a Vlad Guerrero, Jr, know that $364K is only about what Albert Pujols earns every 10 at-bats. I have absolutely no idea what possible "dynamic" could exist that would justify selling one's seat in the first round of the MLB draft for $364,000..........

Elsewhere in Baseball

Eric Hosmer over Miguel Cabrera? It should occur to someone that fans of the Kansas City Royals are having fun, but they don't know shit about baseball............

Billy Hamilton stole 5 bases in one game last night against the Cubs, and the Reds still managed to close a close game in extra innings.............

Joc Perderson had himself a busy day. One catch after another catch after another catch...........

Max Scherzer, the kind of guy who couldn't come play for the Angels because of money already being spent on guys like Josh Hamilton, and the need to protect first round draft picks so that we can being on board Taylor Ward, struck out 16 batters in a 1-hitter against the BrewersFor doing this, Scherzer ended up with a Game Score of 100, putting him onto a very exclusive club.............

Nate Karns invents a new pitch. We need to name it. I suggest the "Vladball"............

Farewell, Two-Arms. Pat Venditte, who can throw a baseball effectively enough with both arms that he needs a special rule in place with MLB umps, headed to the DL the other day because he injured one shoulder, preventing him from throwing with only one arm. Bummer. I was kind of hoping to get to see him over the weekend............

Cal State Fullerton, major underdogs in the College World Series, were actually leading the defending Champion Vanderbilt 3-0 in the 6th inning when thunderstorms rolled in and forced a halt to the game. In the CWS, they don't call games like this. They will finish it today...........

Francisco Lindor gets his first MLB hit, falls down. But what a great sense of humor............

Boston Red Sox suck, and everybody gets to know it. That is all..............
