Angels Farm Daily 6/22: The Owlz Continue To Soar

New, comments

The Owlz won their fourth in a row, beating the Grand Junction Rockies soundly.

This is a Rice Owl, not an Orem Owl. Or is it an Ice Owl? OH!

Triple-A: Salt Lake Bees

The Bees had the day off yesterday. They'll start a three-gamer against the Las Vegas 51s (NYM) tonight, and lefty Tyler DeLoach (1-3, 5.53 ERA) will take the mound.

Double-A: Arkansas Travelers

Albert Suarez was fantastic last night, going six strong and giving up only one earned run to the dreaded NW Arkansas Naturals (KC). Eduard Santos and Chris O'Grady pitched three perfect innings in relief to secure the win.

The Travelers did all of their damage in the third when they scored five runs on eight singles and a sacrifice fly. It's true what they say, eight is enough. Sherman Johnson (2B) came in as a pinch-runner in the inning and ultimately scored. He later hit a single of his own in the fourth inning.

The Travs are now clawing their way back into the season series against their intrastate foes, who have dominated the Angels' AA brethren to the tune of a 12-2 record in 2015. Arkansas completed the first half of the season with a record of 36-33, only 3.5 games back of the NW Arkansas Naturals and good for a second-place finish in the Texas League North division.

Six Travelers were selected to play in the 2015 Texas League All-Star Game, which will be held on June 30, 2015. Not surprisingly, four of the six players selected were pitchers: Chris O'Grady, Albert Suarez, Nate Smith and Trevor Gott. I'm guessing Gott prefers his current assignment. Catcher Raywilly Gomez and infielder Brian Hernandez were also selected to represent the Travelers. Great job, boys!

Rookie: Orem Owlz

Winning their fourth game in a row, the Owlz beat up on the Grand Junction Rockies (COL), 8-2. Kyle Survance, Jr. (CF) went 2-for-4, hitting a double, scoring two runs, drawing a walk and stealing his fifth base in as many games. Shortstop David Fletcher went 4-for-5, with a double, an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Brendon Sanger (LF) did the most damage, though, notching a two-RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Ranyelmy Mendoza (DH) hit a solo shot in the seventh. That's good, because he was picked off first base in the second inning, right before a pair of singles from the next two batters. He also grounded into a double play to end the fourth and struck out to end the seventh. But, hey. Solo shot, man. My favorite line of the night, though? Right-fielder Alex Abbott's 1-for-3. He scored two runs and stuck out twice, but he stole home. Yup, he stole home after being plunked earlier in the inning. I love it.

Six pitchers combined to patch together a wonderful outing by striking out nine and giving up only two earned runs on two hits. Grayson Long pitched an inning and struck out two; Nathan Bates pitched two innings and struck out two; and Tyler Watson earned the win by striking out four and walking none over three innings of one-run ball. In fact, Long, Bates and Watson carried a no-no into the sixth, before Watson gave up a solo shot. Read the full MiLB com main page story about their effort here.

Catcher Taylor Ward went 0-for-4 and struck out once. He's batting a robust .000 on the year.

Rookie: AZL Angels

Mike Morin pitched a rehab assignment for the AZL Angels yesterday. I'm guessing proximity to Anaheim was a factor in that decision. He gave up a hit and recorded a strikeout in the one inning he pitched.

Jahmai Jones (CF) scored the winning run after he drew a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 12th inning. This kid is fast. He probably crawled home after Nick Flair (1B) hit a single to walk it off.
