While Mike Trout has yet to earn a gold glove (defensive metrics always seem to be unkind to him), his skills have no doubt been improving. Kole Calhoun, on the other hand, won an Gold Glove for his impressive 2015 campaign. Do either of them stand a chance in 2016? If you watch this video below - you'd say yes. It is, however, just a small sampling of their plays and definitely does not include all their best highlights - just some pretty damn awesome ones. When you watch this, remember that Calhoun played a good chunk of the season injured and recently had off-season core surgery.
Calhoun was ranked 5th in UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) among all AL Outfielders in 2016 and he was ranked 9th in outfield assists with 9 (He had 11 in 2015). Mike Trout didn't rank all that great in UZR but he did have 7 outfield assists which was 5th among AL Center Fielders. Trout's fielding percentage was down from a perfect 1.000 in 2015 to .989 in 2016 which was good for 10th place. But who cares?? Both Calhoun and Trout (like Simmons) are hella fun to watch and they are no strangers to highlight reels and web gems.
Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout were also among only 10 outfielders in the American League who made any plays in the 1-10% likelihood range. Calhoun made nearly 16% of those plays and Trout made just over 9%. These are plays that pretty much fall under the snowballs chance in hell range - and they can make them.
Oh yea - Daniel Nava snuck into the highlight reel with a homerun robbing play, but left field was mostly devoid of defensive awesomeness in 2016, just like it was devoid of any offense.
Get the popcorn, and get ready to watch this short video on replay. Not all was horrible this past season. Thank you Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun!!
