You all know the drill, the Angels have a thin farm system - but it is not without some talent.  Time for another checkin on the top prospects for 2016.  There are certainly more players with talent in the Angels' farm system, but this features focuses on our top 10.

The Angels top 10 list is according to Baseball America

"HH Grade" is my very unscientific opinion on their performance so far in 2016

2016 performances of the Top 10 Prospects:

Rank Name Position Team Level Notes HH Grade
1. Taylor Ward C Inland Empire 66ers A Adv

The good news, is after a horrible start, Ward has turned it around and is batting .250 his last 10 games.

2. Jahmai Jones OF AZL Angels Rok Season starts in June -
3. Nate Smith LHP Salt Lake Bees AAA

Cruising right along, Smith now has 7 solid starts (out of 8).   He pitched the Bees to a victory on Monday, giving up only 2 runs over 6 IP.

4. Victor Alcantara RHP Arkansas Travelers AA

Alcantara has improved just slightly since the last update.  He is still walking a batter about every other inning and has a 4.66 ERA in 2016.

5. Jake Jewell RHP Inland Empire 66ers A Adv

Jewell still hasn't won a game in 2016 and his BAA is .365, with an ERA of 7.02.  He had his only 2 good starts in early May, but is back to throwing BP with 10 hits over his last 5 inning game.

6. Grayson Long RHP Burlington Bees A

Long is having a spectacular season to date.  He's only given up 4 hits over his last 2 starts (10 IP) with 10ks.  He has a 1.58 ERA in 2016, and hasn't given up more than 2 ER in any game.

7. Joe Gatto RHP Burlington Bees A

Gatto pitched 5 scoreless innings his last time out, but only last 3 in his prior start.  His ERA is 6.25 and WHIP sits at 1.76 this season.

8. Kaleb Cowart 3B Salt Lake Bees AAA Cowart has continued his hot streak and his .356 over his last 10 games has raised his season average to .303. B
9. Jaime Barria RHP Burlington Bees A

Barria has given up 16 hits over his last 10 innings, but he has only walked 1, so that is something - right?  He has a 3.77 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP on the year which is pretty average, so he's doing alright - especially for a 19 year old.

10. Chad Hinshaw OF Arkansas Travelers AA Hinshaw has a hit in his last 3 games, but is batting .189 over his last 10 games and only .204 this season.  He is still winning the K game, and has struck out at a 33% rate over his last 10 games (28% for the season). F

Prospect Notes:

Grayson Long turns 22 on Friday.  Happy birthday!

Jaime Barria is only 19 years old (a little over 2 years younger than the average age of players in A ball).  Considering his age, he's have a pretty decent season for the Burlington.  He also pitches his home games in a fairly non-pitcher friendly ballpark.
