You all know the drill, the Angels have a thin farm system - but it is not without some talent. Time for another checkin on the top prospects for 2016. There are certainly more players with talent in the Angels' farm system, but this features focuses on our top 10. Note: None of this year's current crop of draftees are on this list yet, but it's almost certain that they will be.
1st round pick Matt Thaiss made some noise in his debut with the Orem Owlz yesterday when he went 2-for-3 with a two doubles and a home run. 3rd round pick Nonie Williams went 0-for-2 in his debut yesterday with the AZL Angels.
The Angels top 10 list is according to Baseball America
"HH Grade" is my very unscientific opinion on their performance so far in 2016
2016 performances of the Top 10 Prospects:
|1.||Taylor Ward||C||Inland Empire 66ers||A Adv||
The last good new for Ward was when he hit his only home run of the year back on Mother's Day. His .200 average over the past 10 games isn't winning over any fans.
|2.||Jahmai Jones||OF||Orem Owlz||Rok||Jahmai is back on the field and his .278 over his first 4 game in 18 AB.||B|
|3.||Nate Smith||LHP||Salt Lake Bees||AAA||
Gave up 4 runs on June 9th, but his last time on the mound he threw 6 strong innings and allowed only 1 run. A 4.35 ERA on the year is not too bad, consider the hitter-friendly league he plays in and that the league ERA leader is sitting round 2.90.
|4.||Victor Alcantara||RHP||Arkansas Travelers||AA||
Alcantara allowed 5 ER and 4 walks over his last 12 IP and 2 games. He's been doing okay this year, but nothing spectacular.
|5.||Jake Jewell||RHP||Inland Empire 66ers||A Adv||
Although he has been allowing a lot of hits, Jewell's last 3 starts were pretty solid. He threw 16 innings and struck out 12, allowing 6 ER and 5 walks. Okay, that's not that great, but the bar has been low for him all year.
|6.||Grayson Long||RHP||Burlington Bees||A||
ON THE DL. 5/25 update: Long is having a spectacular season to date. He's only given up 4 hits over his last 2 starts (10 IP) with 10ks. He has a 1.58 ERA in 2016, and hasn't given up more than 2 ER in any game.
|7.||Joe Gatto||RHP||Burlington Bees||A||
Gatto's woes continues as he was rocked for 7 ER in 1.2 innings his last start. His ERA on the year is 7.47.
|8.||Kaleb Cowart||3B||Salt Lake Bees||AAA||Now this his competition is gone after Kubitza was sent to the Rangers for cash, we'll see what Cowart can do. He hit .270 over his last 10 games with 3 SB.||B|
|9.||Jaime Barria||RHP||Burlington Bees||A||
Barria was so-so his last two starts, giving up 6 ER in 8 innings of work. He walked zero batters and is continuing to show very good control.
|10.||Chad Hinshaw||OF||Arkansas Travelers||AA||Hinshaw hasn't played since June 7th went he went on the 7-day DL.||F|
Jaime Barria pitched a perfect 3rd inning for the MidWest All-Stars last night and only needed 9 pitches to record all 3 outs.
Gave Jahmai Jone a starting grade of a B. Let's see where he goes from here.
Moved Joe Gatto from a D- to an F. His year is getting worse almost every time he pitches.
