Cow Tipping: Angels farm report 7/13/16 - Prospects on the move

Lots of updates from the 2016 draft class

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
Affiliate Teams (from AAA to Rookie):

Orem Owls, DSL and ARZ Angels rookie team players will also  be covered in the bi-monthly 2016 draftee update.

Note:  I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks.  A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball.  Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

AZL Angels
Tempe, AZ
Level = Rok, Arizona League

Through 14 games the AZL Angels have exactly 1 HR as a team which is last in the AZL league.  The Angels are still good at drafting non-power hitting players it seems.

Studs:

Ryan Vega (OF, 19), I can't imagine how much longer last year's 14th round pick will stay in Arizona.  Sure he's only 19, but he's having a great season. In his last 10 games he is batting .361 with the team's only home run.  He also hasn't struck out a whole lot and has 4 SB in 4 attempts this year.

Others:

Nonie Williams (SS, 18), Williams is slowly starting to hit better and has a .211 over his last 10 games.  His strikeouts continue to be very high.

DSL Angels
Dominican Republic
Level = Rok, Dominican League

Studs:

Leonardo Rivas (SS, 18), Rivera has stolen more bases (19) than he has strikeouts (18), including three bags he swiped in one game on July 7th.
Elvin Rodriguez (RHP, 18), has an incredible .64 WHIP in 25 IP along with 29 Ks.

Orem Owlz
Orem, UT
Level = Rok, Pioneer League

The Owlz currently have the best AVG in the league, but hot-hitting Zimmerman and Thaiss were promoted to the Burlington Bees last week.

Studs:

Brennon Lund (OF, 21), Lund has slowed his insane pace a bit to batting .311 over his past 10 games.  He was out of the lineup for 3 games in a row last week for some reason and has hit 2 for 19 since his return from that short break.
Troy  Montgomery (OF, 21), Montrgomery is hitting .382 over his last 10 games and has 6 SB during that time.  He has a .462 OBP this season.
Jahmai Jones (OF - #2 BBA Prospect, 18),  Moved his average up from .233 a few weeks ago to .324 on the season.  He's hit .378 his last 10 games with 8 SB.

Burlington Bees
Burlington, Iowa
Level = A, Midwest League

Studs:

[Moving up!] Matt Thaiss (1B, 21), has gone 6 for 17 since his call-up from Orem.  His AVG is .364 over his last 10 games.
Michael Hermosillo (LF), is hitting .375 hist last 10 games and has a .404 OBP this year.
Jaime Barria (RHP - #9 BBA Prospect), is continuing his good season.  In his last 3 games (15 IP), he's allowed 4 ER and walked 4 while striking out 16.  Has a fairly low 1.5 per 9 walk rate as well.
Zach Hartman (RHP), moved up to A ball this year after a pretty good rookie season in 2015.  Until last night, he hadn't allowed a run since June 5th, which was a string of 15.1 innings over 10 games.  He did get the save last night, despite the run he gave up.
Samuel Holland (RHP), has only allowed 1 run all season (20 IP).  He has a .159 BAA, 0.65 WHIP and 0.90 ERA this year.

Duds:

Brendon Sanger (IF - #15 in MLB pipeline), only hitting .189 his last 10 games and .233 on the year. He has a 20% K rate this season, along with a 12% walk rate.
Joe Gatto (RHP - #7 BBA Prospect), was put on the DL June 25th.  Hopefully nothing serious.

Others:

[Moving up!] Jordan Zimmerman (2B, 21), is 1 for 12 since being called up from Orem where he had been red hot.  He has a .349 AVG over his last 10 games and a .447 OBP this season.
Jake Yacinich (SS - #26 in MLB Pipeline) has improved from a .144 AVG on the last report to hitting .282 over his last 10 games.  Yacinich currently has a 6 game hitting streak
Grayson Long (RHP - #6 BBA Prospect),  Has been on the DL since May 30th which is not a great sign. Haven't been able to find any more information on his status.

Inland Empire 66ers
San Bernardino, CA
Level = A+, California League

Studs:

David Fletcher (SS) He is batting .295 over his last 10 games with only 4 Ks and hit a grand slam last night for his first homerun in Adv A.
Nick Nate Fury (RHP), continues to drop his ERA and it's now at 1.29 over his last 10 games.
Jake Jewell (#5 BBA Prospect), has allowed only 4 ER in his last 17.2 IP, though has walked 11.
Jared Ruxer (RHP), in his last 10 games he has a 2.00 ERA and 35K over 45 innings. His 2016 ERA is just 1.60 and his WHIP is 1.17.

Duds:

Roberto Baldoquin (SS), His average is taking a nosedive and he now has a .168 AVG on the season.  In his last 10 games he's batting .162.  I'm not watching him in person, but it sure look millions of dollars are slipping away in this investment.
Zach Houchins (3B), in the last update, Houchins had a 7 game hitting streak but in his last 10 games he's only 3 for 34 .
Ryan Sebra (1B), is only batting .183 this year and just .158 over his last 10 games.
Tim Arakawa (OF), had a cup of coffee in AAA this year and played in the Cal-Car All-Star game, but is hitting just .139 over his last 10 games.
Adam Hofacket (RHP - #29 in MLB Pipeline), allowed 10 ER in his last 4.2 innings pitched over 34 games.
Josh Delph (OF), Hitting just .186 since he was moved up from the Bees on May 31.

Others:

Taylor Ward (C - #1 BBA Prospect), recently came off a 6 game hitting streak and has a .308 AVG over his last 10 games, raising his season average to .245.  Hopefully things are starting to click with him.
Craig Gentry (OF), has played 3 rehab games for the 66ers and has gone 3 for 5.
Jeremy Rhoades (RHP - #17 in MLB Pipeline), is still struggling and gave up 5 ER in 5.2 innings of work during his last start.  He did pitch two scoreless starts before that, which have been his only scoreless appearances this year.

Arkanas Travelers
Little Rock, Arkansas
Level = AA, Texas League

Studs:

Andrew Daniel (2B), has been on fire lately to tune of a .459 AVG over his last 10 games.
Keynan Middleton (RHP)  This 3rd round pick from 2013 may have a modest 3.48 ERA on the season but also has an impressive .177 BAA and 1.14 WHIP.  Over his last 11 innings, he's only walked 4 and has struck out 18.

Duds:

Angel Rosa (3B), is batting .158 over his last 10 games and .183 on the year with 68 Ks in 208 AB which is a 33% K rate.
Stephen McGee (C), nothing to see here. He's batting .143 over his last 10 games.
Chris O'Grady (LHP), his time is getting short.  He's not having the best season in AA and is already 26 years old.  He has a 9.39 ER over his last 10 appearances with 15Ks, 13 walks, and 24 hits in 15.1 innings.

Others:

Chad Hinshaw (CF - #9 in MLB Pipeline) Went on the DL June 11th.
Alex Blackford (RHP), has 13 walks over his last 19 innings pitched.  He did pitch a scoreless and hitless 5 innings last week.
Victor Alcantara (RHP - #4 BBA Prospect), 7 ER over his last 3 starts with 12 walks in 13.1 innings.  His BB/9 is hovering around 4.
Caleb Adams (RF - #20 in MLB Pipeline), is more  adjusted to AA ball and is hitting .293 over his last 10 games - plus, the catcher was sleeping a bit - but watch this awesome steal of home!

Salt Lake Bees
Salt Lake City, Utah
Level = AAA, Pacific Coast League

Studs:

Nick Buss (OF), Buss was activated on June 17th after a short DL stint.  In his last 10 games he's hitting .385 with 2 home runs and 12 RBIs.
Sherman Johnson (2B), is getting adjusted in AAA and is hitting .308 over his last 10 games (.247 in AAA this year).
Jose Valdez (RHP), picked up from the Tigers on June 7th, he continues to pitch great.  He has a 0.75 ERA his last 10 games with 15 Ks in 12 innings.
Tyler Skaggs (LHP) had a couple of good rehab starts, allowing only 3 runs in 10 innings with 9 Ks.  He's scheduled to pitch again today.
Mike Morin (RHP) has pitched in two games for the Bees this month and given up zero runs and zero hits in 1.1 innings with 2 Ks.
Tyler DeLoach (LHP), Just one run allowed in 3.2 innings and 4 games so far in July.

Duds:

Kaleb Cowart (3B - #8 BBA Prospect), Cowart is only hitting .108 his last 10 games with 12 Ks.  He had one AB in the AAA All-Star game last night and struck out.
Blayne Weller (RHP), Ouch is all you can say when you've given up 19 runs in 7.1 innings over your last two starts.  Even in the hitter-friendly PCL league that is just terrible.
Kyle McGowin (RHP - #16 in MLB Pipeline), 10 ER in his last two starts.  He's also allowed 14 hits and had 9 Ks in those 11 innings.
Greg Mahle (LHP)  Has been struggling in Salt Lake.  In his last two appearances he's given up 5 ER in 3 innings while allowing 8 hits and 1 walk.
Cal Towey (OF) Towey started off great when he got promoted to AAA on June 11th, but is only hitting .188 over his last 10 games.

Others:

Nate Smith (RHP - #3 BBA Prospect), pitched an inning in the Futures game and gave up 2 runs.  His last two starts prior to that he gave up 6 runs over 12 innings with 13 Ks.
Jose Alvarez (LHP), has pitched 4.1 innings for Salt Lake and gave up 4 walks, 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 4.
