The Angels started off the scoring when Yunel Escobar led off the 1st with a triple and later scored on a Mike Trout groundout RBI. Unfortunately, Kole Calhoun strayed too far off second base, and the inning ended with Dioner Navarro threw him out.
Both Matt Shoemaker and James Shields were dealing from the start and allowed only 1 hit each through the first 3 innings. Shoemaker had already notched 5Ks through the third and would end up going the distance on 115 pitched with an amazing 95 game score, a complete game shutout, and his best game of the season.
Sadly for James Shields, he also pitched probably his best game of the season, allowing on 2 hits the entire game. That lead off triple by Escobar was key and Trout's knock to score him was the only run needed to win.
If you were looking for some strong offense this game, you were probably disappointed. This was, however, one hell of a pitching matchup and thanks to Shoemaker, the Angels have already won the series are start off the second half with a 2 game winning streak.
Nice work Matt Shoemaker!!
