Cow Tipping: Angels farm report 7/27/16 - Ortega raking

Prospects on the move + Ortega and Cowart are raking in AAA

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports
Affiliate Teams (from AAA to Rookie):

Orem Owls, DSL and ARZ Angels rookie team players will also  be covered in the bi-monthly 2016 draftee update.

Note:  I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks.  A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball.  Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

AZL Angels
Tempe, AZ
Level = Rok, Arizona League

Studs:

Ryan Vega (OF, 19), Currently has a 5 game hitting streak and is batting .413 on the year with a 1.055 OPS.  He also has 2 homeruns, 2 triples, and 5 stolen bases.
Leonardo Rivas (SS, 18), Rivas was recently moved to the AZL Angels from the DSL Angels.  He has a .333/.529/.750 line in 5 games for the AZL Angels.

Others:

Nonie Williams (SS, 18), Williams has just a .211/.250/.263 line this year.  He was the 3rd round pick in 2016.

DSL Angels
Dominican Republic
Level = Rok, Dominican League

Studs:

Jorge Tavarez (RHP, 20), has only walked 4 and has struck out 26 over 25.2 innings this year.  He has a 2.45 ERA and 0.94 WHIP.  I wonder about the future success of a pitcher who is listed at 150# at age 20?

Orem Owlz
Orem, UT
Level = Rok, Pioneer League

Studs:

[Moving up] Keith Grieshaber (
SS, 21), Was the benefit of Connor Justus moving up to A ball, as well as having a great season in Arizona.  He was hitting .356 with an .837 OPS in the AZL league.
Zach Gibbons (OF, 22), hitting .404 on the year and .432 over his last 10 games.
Cody Ramer (SS, 22), has a .372 average over the 10 games he has played so far this year.
Greg Belton (RHP, 23), picked up in the 27th round of the 2016 draft, Belton has a 2.18 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP in his 11 games.

Others:

Jahmai Jones (OF - #2 BBA Prospect, 18), is batting .300 over his past 10 games with 1 homerun.

Burlington Bees
Burlington, Iowa
Level = A, Midwest League

Studs:

Brennon Lund (OF, 21), Lund lead Orem in hitting, and is doing the same in Burlington with a .357 AVG and 3 SB since being called up on July 14th.
[Moving up] Troy  Montgomery (OF, 21), Montgomery is hitting .308 over his last 10 games and .350 in Burlington since his call up for Orem on July 20th.  He's safely hit in all 5 of his games in A ball.
Alexis Rivera (OF, 22), Rivera is in his 5th minor league season, having debuted for KC when he was just 17.  He is hot right now with a .405 AVG over his last 10 games, along with 4 homeruns.
Samuel Holland (RHP), Lights out baby!  Holland has a 0.71 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and .157 BAA this year in 15 games.  He's only walked 3 in 25.1 innings and has struck out 17.

Duds:

Brendon Sanger
(IF - #15 in MLB pipeline), only hitting .189 his last 10 games and .233 on the year. He has a 20% K rate this season, along with a 12% walk rate.
Joe Gatto (RHP - #7 BBA Prospect), was put on the DL June 25th.  Hopefully nothing serious.

Others:

Jaime Barria (RHP - #9 BBA Prospect), has one of his worst outings of the year on Sunday, but it was still not too horrible.  He gave up 4 runs through 5 innings.  In his prior 6 starts, he hadn't give up more than 2 runs.
Jake Yacinich (SS - #26 in MLB Pipeline) Hitting .333 over his last 10 games with only 3 Ks.
Matt Thaiss (1B, 21) - Just .268 over his last 10 games with 3 Ks and 3 walks.  He is batting .306 in Burlington through 15 games.

Inland Empire 66ers
San Bernardino, CA
Level = A+, California League

Sadly, the 66ers are a bit of a mess and don't have a lot of players performing well right now.  They have the worst record in the California league with a .313 winning percentage.  They also have the worst AVG, runs scored, and second worst ERA.

Studs:

Jared Foster (OF), is hitting .341 in his last 10 games and .280 now on the year.  That's about as close as you get to a stud currently on this team.

Duds:

Justin Anderson (LHP), in his last 3 starts, he has given up 21 runs, 29 hits, and 5 walks in 15 innings pitched.
Jeremy Rhoades (RHP - #17 in MLB Pipeline), allowed 24 hits in his last 19.1 innings and gave up 14 runs.
Jake Jewell (#5 BBA Prospect), It pains me every time I look at his stats.  In his last 2 games he gave up 15 ER and 21 hits in 9 total innings.  It's like he's TRYING to throw batting practice?  He also walks a batter about every other inning.
Roberto Baldoquin (SS), sounds like a broken record, but he's only hitting .152 over his last 10 games and .167 this season.

Others:

Jared Ruxer (RHP), was called up from the Burlington Bees on July 8th, but has a 5.21 ERA in Advanced A ball.  He gave up 6 runs in his last start and only lasted 4 innings.
Adam Hofacket (RHP - #29 in MLB Pipeline), on the DL as of July 17th.
Taylor Ward (C - #1 BBA Prospect), is actually hitting .263 over his last 10 games with a homerun.  He's raised his average on the year to .247 with a .313 OBP.

Arkanas Travelers
Little Rock, Arkansas
Level = AA, Texas League

Studs:

Troy Scribner (RHP), in 6 of his last 9 starts, he has allowed zero runs, including the 6.2 scoreless he threw his last time out with only 2 hits allowed.
Chris O'Grady (LHP), Has had a rough early and was sent down from Salt Lake on July 1st.  However, over his last 12.2 innings (2 starts, and 2 in relief), he has only allowed 1 run, 12 hits, 0 walks, and struck out 12.
Alex Blackford (RHP), only walked 1 over his last two starts of 12.2 innings, which is a huge improvement to him walking a batter about every other inning.  He gave up 2 runs and struck out 13 in those 2 games.
Alex Yarbrough (2B), has been heating up and has a .342 AVG with 2 homeruns over his last 10 games.
Forrestt Allday (RF), has hit .400 over his last 10 games with 6 walks and only 5 Ks.  He has a .385 OBP this season.
Andrew Daniel (2B), has been pretty consistent in 2016 and has a .344 over his last 10 games with 2 homeruns,10 RBIs and only 3 Ks.

Duds:

Victor Alcantara (RHP - #4 BBA Prospect), 8 ER over his last 2 starts with 9 walks in 8 innings.  His BB/9 is hovering around 4 this year.
[Moving up] Tim Arakawa (OF), He's only hitting .190 since joining the Travelers 13 games ago but he does have a .320 OBP.

Others:

Tyler DeLoach (LHP), Spent some time in AAA but was sent back down on July 18th.  Since being back in Arkansas, he's thrown 4.1 innings over 5 games and has allowed 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk with 6 Ks.
Caleb Adams (RF - #20 in MLB Pipeline), batting .259 in his last 10 games and .227 in his 44 games in AA.

Salt Lake Bees
Salt Lake City, Utah
Level = AAA, Pacific Coast League

Studs:

Rafael Ortega (OF) has been super hot with a .475 AVG and 3 SB over his last 10 games.
Kaleb Cowart (3B - #8 BBA Prospect), has also been on fire with a .410 AVG over his last 10, and he has a .347 OBP this year.
Mike Morin (RHP) has pitched in 9 games now for the Bees, and 8 of those appearances have been scoreless + 6 of them have been hitless.  He's only allowed 1 walk over those 9 games and has struck out 10.
Jose Valdez (RHP), is having himself a year with Salt Lake.  Since joining on June 8th, he's allowed only 2 ER in 21.2 innings.  Over his last 10 games he's allowed just 1 run and struck out 12.
A.J. Achter (RHP), has only allowed 1 run since July 1st in 10 innings.  He has a 1.01 WHIP in Salt Lake this year in 22 games.

Duds:

Kyle McGowin (RHP - #16 in MLB Pipeline), Has had a rough go lately.  12 ER over 10.2 innings in his last 2 starts.  He has a 5.94 ERA since being called up to Salt Lake in early May.
Nick Buss (OF), Buss had been playing well all year but finally hit a dry spot with a .132 AVG over his last 10 games, along with 12 Ks.
Cal Towey (OF) His slump continues as he is hitting just .152  over this last 10 games.
Sherman Johnson (2B), has had a rough go lately with just 2 hits in his last 32 at bats.  He has at least walked 12 times so he's keeping his OBP up, which is at .334 in Salt Lake this year.
Nate Smith (RHP - #3 BBA Prospect), has hit a rough patch and has allowed 10 ER over his last 2 starts of 11.2 innings.  He's also allowed 16 hits and 3 walks in those 2 games.z
Javy Guerra (RHP) has allowed 2 or more runs in 3 of his last 4 relief apperances.
