TuesdoLinks: let the offseason begin!

New, comments

Now is the time for all good men and women (and kids of all sorts) to come together for the aid of our team’s R&D.

And I’m back! Thanks a million to Jessica, Carlos and Rahul for stepping up while the missus and I were totally freaking in Salem, where I was busy proving my point that it is perfectly doable to stay up late and watch west coast baseball.

A couple of observations on things over the past week. Very cool that Houston wins the WS the way they did, stomping on the throats the of Red Sox, then the Yankees, then the Dodgers. Especially the Dodgers, who got to represent the same NL that feasted in the early years of the Astros tank job when the Astros were in the NL Central...........Not too cool that the Astros are now our problem. I’m still hopeful of a short window for them as payroll rises and contracts expire and prospects lost come back to dampen their mojo. It would be good to see that 4 years of suckage and 2 years of rising ain’t worth only 1 year of trophy and 2 years of hanging on before hitting the reset button again...........

Welcome to Left Field, Justin Upton! I have no idea how well this pans out over the next half a decade, but i do know that it is all upside over what we have faced out there the past 5 years. (We got a grand total of 3.0 bWAR out of Hambone for all that money, and a major black hole in the roster for 4 of those 5 years. Upton has already yielded 0.5 bWAR in just 27 games.)..........

Salem is sick with history. It’s a beautiful little village in the downtown scene with great eats and great booze. (This was a local discovery that has launched a new cause to find a way to get it shipped to California!) I could go on for days on the witch stuff, of course, and have some new tales of the supernatural worthy of investigation. But I had no idea how important Salem was to pre-revolution American history and development. I have been lost to that research ever since Halloween concluded, unfortunately with little help from local resources, who have done a piss-poor job of being custodians to their own non-witchy legacy...........

Let’s get on with the Offseason-Links:

A Little Bit of Angels News

Shane Robinson, Deolia Guerra and Eric Young Jr. are off to the marketplace. No offense to those other guys, but EYJ will be the guy I pay attention to...........

The Angels go into the FA market looking for “good value”, looking to be “opportunistic”. Which means the Front Office is telling the daily scribes not to expect any Big Splash this offseason..........

If you are one of those patrons who, like myself, tend to see the Angel Stadium experience as a glass far from full, here is one way to provide input. Cal State Fullerton is conducting an online survey on behalf of Arte & Co. The first half of the study asks a lot of bad questions, presuming that you you will like whatever choice LAA makes with your preferred experience. For example, are you more inclined to go to a game if there is a post-game concert? Well, sure, if I get to choose the band But that’s not how they are geared to interpret your response. My fave (so far) is the one that forces you to answer how it is that you find out there are tickets for sale. Not a single one is their own web site or their own ticket exchange. Nor can you simply respond with an “I just know how to buy a ticket” or “I have season tickets”. No, they want to know whether twitter or Roger Lodge is more effective. Oh, and then there is this painful moment: “On what social media outlets to you follow Los Angeles Angels content? (Check all that apply)“. And your choices are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and None. Hard stop. Blogs such as HH not being social media I get, and is the problem with the question. By selecting “none”, you run the risk of being pigeonholed as a Luddite..........

October Baseball

In the Department of I-Told-You-So, I cannot allow the book on the World Series to close without my final contribution. The morning after Game 1 I wrote this: “Clayton Kershaw went 7 innings strong, giving up one run on only 3 hits, no walks and 11 K’s. And he WILL be back. At least once, if not twice (pretending there may be an epic emergency Game 7 appearance). The Astros need to figure him out at least for an inning or two if they wish to get over the top in this World Series.

Well, that’s pretty much how it worked out, no? Here is Kershaw’s WS body of work:

So the lesson here, kids, is that if the old man tells you to get off of his lawn, maybe he is on to something and has a point. Maybe he is doing all that he can to fight off Global Warming and try to protect the cooling power and oxygen-generating capabilities of the greenery!............

Everywhere In Baseball

Gak! The “Modern Baseball Era” Committee released their 2017 ballot for Hof candidates (guys overlooked by the normal assemblage of BBWAA dinosaur asshattery). And it looks suspiciously like this is the Committee where the dinosaur asshats who lost their BBWAA voting privileges landed:

The lines in yellow are the ones who did NOT make the ballot, but SHOULD have! Old news to you and me, but by now one would think that this information might have reached a slightly broader understanding..........

Double Gak! Looking into the future of baseball, and how technology might someday enhance the player preparation process, all I see are vast fields of lawyers battling intellectual property law..........

It’s Awards Season. BBWAA season nominees were announced last night. Gold Glove winners will be announced tonight. The full schedule is here, and we will be tracking. Not that there is much hope for any hardware in Anaheim this season..........

While I am at it, bookmark this page to keep up with the important dates for our offseason..........

Until he facts prove otherwise or MLB makes some kind of change, I would expect that over the next few seasons yes, strikeouts and home runs will continue to both trend upward..........

World Series TV ratings fought hard - and won - against the tide of ever fragmenting viewing habits..........And the Yankees won in their market, big time.........

Simplest idea yet for speeding up games, and easy to implement. Limit mound visits OF ANY KIND to only 1 per inning. “You have one per inning, max, catchers. Use it wisely. Otherwise, figure out the communication on your own time.“..........

Pitching Framing ain’t dead yet. Not by a long shot.........

This could get interesting. FOX is looking to sell off a bunch of themselves to Disney, so that they can focus on news and sports. Focusing on sports should mean more content, in more ways, for more audiences. baseball can only win in that scenario, right? The “rising tide floats all boats” theory?..........

Hot Stove

I wonder if Zack Cozart plays 2B?...........

MLB Trade Rumors is our go-to link target for this section. Here is their tracker, and here is the Top 50 predictor that Carlos gave you last Friday (already out of date as I type this because of Masahiro Tanaka). They have the Angels in on Yonder Alonso, which only makes sense if C.J. Cron is traded away.........But first off we have to deal with the status of all the Qualifying Offers..........

Mike Moustakas is going to cost somebody a draft pick (assuming Moose doesn’t take the offer)..........

I am going to be really surprised if we don’t hear whispers again about Yu Darvish tipping pitches in the World Series as the reason for his public failure, and I would suspect that the origins of those whispers will be Darvish’s own agency working to pump back up his value..........

Watch the Red Sox. They don’t care ‘bout no luxury tax threshold. The thing to watch is where they think they are going to spend all that money, because this year’s FA talent pool is loaded with traps..........It could be that they just go grab Giancarlo Stanton..........

The Duffle Bag

MLB might like the sound of getting back to Montreal, but MLB is going to have use their own money...........Brian Cashman giving Joe Girardi’s reputation a shove off the bus stop?..........Not that he cares, but here is Mike Trout losing the marketing war..........This is why Munenori Kawasaki is greater than Mike Trout. He has TWO rings, in two consecutive years. Obviously a clutch contributor..........Astros selling Minute Maid dirt. Because capitalism.........

And, finally, I leave you with this, when you know you are in the most wrong part of America:
