MondoLinks: Close the book on the off-season

New, 98 comments

Pitchers and catcher report to Tempe tomorrow. Today ends the off-season.

We made it. We groaned through the majority of a 2016 season lost to injury, and then drudged through a winter of moderate, not spectacular, steps back to competitive health. We are not as good as we want to be, but we are better off than we were last June. Now let's see how things pan out in Spring Training. Are we capable of being a challenger? Time to start finding out!

A Little Bit of Angels News

At the cost of losing a few HH readers to reddit forever (you know who you are...), a sub-reddit dedicated to Alex Curry has been launched............

Man, you look at the list of names on this list of Top CF's in baseball, and you realize that any of those names after Mike Trout would make for a very fine showpiece for any team. That is a very strong position in baseball these days............

The Angels are still picking up bits and pieces heading into camp. Over the weekend they nabbed right-handed pitcher Austin Adams from the Indians, DFA'ing Deolis Guerra to make room. Considering that pitchers and catchers report just tomorrow, this is some serious last-minutes logistics for Adams............

I still say that the Angels are not wasting the prime years of Mike Trout because I feel that Trout's prime years are only just beginning. Just because Trout has been dominant for the past doesn't mean they are the best 5 years his body can produce. It's more a testimony to just how incredible Trout is, that he has been doing this at an incredibly young, pre-peak, age. This is why he has been seen as a potential Top 5 MLB player of all time. And, yeah, if Billy Eppler can keep improving the franchise at the pace he has already set, Mike Trout will be in the playoffs a couple more times during his actual peak years.............

Everywhere In Baseball

We know the feeling. Well, those of us who have been cognizant LAA fans for more than 2 decades. The Detroit Tigers owner, Mike Ilitch, has died and he died without ever tasting that World Series. To Tigers fans, I know you people loved him. And you are not alone in your sorrow. It's tough to lose your owner. It's sad, frustrating and scary. But it doesn't have to take a franchise into the netherworld. We are proof............That said, his pizza sucked...........

You wanna fix baseball? Start by fixing what you already broke, Instant Replay............

This is the kind of thing that can torpedo hopes and dreams anywhere. Sean Rodriguez, who was involved in a car crash late last month, might be lost for the entire season while recovering from shoulder surgery as a result of that crash..........

Interesting. With that huge pipeline of farm talent how could the Rangers be considered a team with their window of opportunity CLOSING?. (The Angels' window is still being propped wide open my Mike Trout and Billy Eppler.)..........

Jeffrey Loria, major cluster-frack as an owner and an absolute shit, is on the verge of making a billion dollars just because he is sitting on some ownership paperwork. We LAA fans should be mindful, because it shows us just how incredibly valuable a team can be when everyone around us is whining about things like payroll and stadium financing...........And to think that there are still stadium naming rights and a new TV contract coming to the Marlins franchise............

You might recall Aroldis Chapman taking a shot at Joe Maddon after signing with the Yankees. Chapman was less than happy at how he was used in the World Series (yeah, the one that put a ring on his finger). Well, now that Jason Hammel has signed with the Royals it is coming out that he, too, is not very happy with the way that Maddon chose to use him. This should become a more frequent refrain if Maddon continues to explore the new territory he has opened up recently in pitcher usage. Today's pitchers have spent a lifetime molding themselves into working a certain way and these guys are not the most analytically-minded of athletes.............

Mike Matheny, Cards manager, is 5 years behind even Mike Scioscia when it comes to the use of modern information in the approach to understanding what's happening on the field of baseball?...........

Attorney representing the families of the other victims in the boat wreck that killed Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, are suing the Fernandez estate for $2 million each. I wonder what happens if the investigation finds that it wasn't Fernandez who was riving the boat?............

Trade Winds

Chase Utley is sticking around in Dodger blue.............

Brandon Phillips finally - FINALLY! - agreed to being traded away from Cincinnati. Phillips is going off to the Braves after all. He had, you may recall, exercised his no-trade clause to block at least three other trade attempts, including a one within the last year that would have sent him to the Braves. Phillips has always wanted to stick things out and win with the Reds. Ima gonna guess that he just might find it a little mroe fun going to work every day this season...........

The Duffle Bag

I need to make a point. I know I harp on the Angels for not thinking very hard at promo ideas, there IS a point where it's possible to think TOO hard. The Baltimore Doormats???............B/R is struggling to stick it out in the Big Time. Going MSM is hard, especially in an era when MSM is dying...........The best way to troll the Boston fan base is to hit them with math..........Barry Bonds crashes FanFest, Giants fans go crazy...............

OT: So is Seattle Salmon now a controlled substance?
