MondoLinks: And the Winner is...

New, 97 comments

In a world where make-believe can't even get the make-believe right, it's great to have baseball back in our lives.

By now you know that last night the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences waited until the very end to figure out a way to hand out their very most biggest and prestigious award to the wrong people. And then, with those wrong people standing right there in front of the whole world getting pwned, they all and scramble to figure out how to give it to the real winners who were somewhere out of sight.

So ain't that just a great thing about baseball? It is real live drama happening in real time. For 15 bucks you can get 3 hours of brand new suspense on any of 5 to 6 days a week. Sometimes with moments of comedy. Often historic. No repeats. No remakes. No spinoffs. No Part 9's. And the results are absolutely objective. We will never, ever have a moment when the Commissioner of Baseball walks into the clubroom of the losing team and hands them the World Series trophy.

Hollywood would do well to think about that after their bonehead last night. Screwing up their own party might make for some news, but it didn't change anything in the end. Because what they do ain't real. The money might be, but that don't make them so.

And besides, baseball will give us more content this season than all of Hollywood. We is where it's at.

A Little Bit of Angels News

Boom! Weekend games! Final scores don't mean spit during Spring Training, but ending up with more runs than the other guy is still more fun. So the Angels concluded the opening weekend by going undefeated. Ben Revere had himself a nice coming out party, giving us an RBI triple on Saturday as the Halos beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0, and then giving us an RBI double on Saturday to pair up with an RBI double by fellow newcomer Luis Valbuena and lead the squad to a 5-3 win over the Oakland A's..........

Mike Trout is considering a possible participation in the WBC. No, not this one. The one that might be held in 2021. Then again, if the WBC doesn't fly this year there might not be another WBC for Mike to join up.............

This is becoming an LAA thing. We already know that Angels staff have been re-working the delivery of Alex Meyer. Bud Norris, a far more established MLB pitcher than Meyer, is in the middle of the same thing. He just took a new delivery into a live game yesterday..........

This story got updated over the weekend, so let's keep it in our sights. Danny Espinosa is delighted to be in Anaheim. And it don't hurt that he has brought his Beard of 1863 to the balance out the Izod Fog of Newport.............

Andrew Bailey pretty said 'Screw it. Lemme sign back up with these dudes who rescued my career last season'...........

Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs are now taking on real guys with real bats, which is great progress............

Everywhere In Baseball

Uh, has anybody yet noticed a trend here? Josh Hamilton is now expected to have knee surgery. This would be the same Hamilton who said that he was feeling great after coming back from a check on his knee even as we now learn that we was never feeling right after a couple of days on a bike. And it was the same Hamilton who was telling everyone how great he felt coming into camp even though he he was hobbling off in crutches after only a single turn in a batting cage. My money is on the dude just being done...........

Breaking news: The St. Louis Cardinals have apparently joined every other frikkin' baseball team with an effort to scout the Cuban super phenom Luis Roberts. That's sooo insightful of them...........

Sonny Gray has had such a tough time of it with injuries lately, that the A's insurance carrier is overriding the A's and MLB and yanking Gray from the WBC. Since MLB was leaning on the insurance company to let Gray play, this says more about MLB than it does about anything else............

Just like it's time to get back into the groove of real baseball, it's time to remember shit that runs out onto the field and interrupts real baseball...........

Wait. Wasn't Aroldis Chapman the guy sending out those negative vibes towards Joe Maddon for Maddon having gall to use Chapman for more than one inning of relief on their way to a World Series title? And now Chapman is announcing to the Yankees that he is open to running out there for more than one inning?.............

Remember the dust up in New York when Yankees President Randy Levine was dumping on the camp of reliever Dellin Betances for having he nerve to ask for money? Yeah, well, when you do the dance of arb math that has payroll increases advancing season over season, that one Yankees arb win over Betances might have cost Betances $10 million over his career...............

The Duffle Bag

Apparently, our AAA team in Salt Lake City made the NYTimes Sunday crossword puzzle..........If the Mets look like they have a real strong playoff position and it is only the first of June, well, we can all ignore is and they can thank the MLB scheduling staff............Oh, I forgot. Here comes Tim Tebow. Brace yourself...............Ha. It seems that baseball in Arizona has taken some people by surprise, most notably the guys who set the sprinkler timers............More funny rules ideas: speed up the game by having only 8 guys hit.............Victor Rojas, jumping in to the Halos Heaven tweet storm with both foam fingers..............(h/t UniWatch, who get no points for their stupid name humor), a photo from the very first LA Angels Spring Training camp............A's reliever John Axford went 19 for 24 with his Oscar picks this year, continuing his run of damned impressive results...............

Game over, man. R.I.P. Bill Paxton.............
