If you read my articles last year, each week I wrote a summary of the best and and well, the not so good performances of the week. This year I’m changing the format a bit. I’ll cover the entire 40 man roster and will split it between position players and pitchers (generally 20 or so guys on each list). Each week the list will change based on the past week’s performance - but also taking into account their performance year to date.
Summary
The Angels scored 28 runs this past week and had 3 games in which they only scored 2 runs. However, then also had three 5+ run games so the offense is showing some faint signs of life. Overall, the offense was decent but Pujols, Marte, Escobar, and Espinosa all struggled at the plate (even though 3 of them hit homeruns) with none of them batting more than .214 and they struck out a combined 26 times.
Cron is out and Valbuena is in. He’s expected to join the team on Tuesday.
We are 1 month into the season and only Mike Trout is hitting over .300. Andrelton Simmons falls in at second place with a .284 AVG and .358 OBP. Who know that the Angels top 3 hitters one month in would be Trout, Simmons, and Maldanado? Revere, Marte, Pennington, and Espinosa aren’t even batting .200 and Maybin just barely makes it over the Mendoza line with a .206 for the month.
Angels fielders have the second most errors in the AL so far at 19 with the A’s taking up the lead at 22. The Angels are 10th in double plays turned, 12th in defensive runs saved and 11th in UZR/150. Those numbers are not exactly what we hoped to see with this re-tooled defense. Aside from the catcher spot where the Angels have thrown out 45% of would be base stealers, they are below average in almost every defensive category.
These rankings were compiled with the help of MLB stats, FanGraphs, misc. data, personal opinion, scribblings on Cam Bedrosian’s Five Guys wrappers, and some fairy dust I found hidden in Matt Shoemaker’s beard.
Not on this list:
Luis Valbuena, rehab assignment
