MondoLinks: Halos steal a series win

The Angels are the first team in Baseball to take a series win over the Astros this season, driven in large part by the dynamics of Cameron Maybin and Eric Young, Jr.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

If you try hard enough, and often enough, eventually you get past the Craig Gentrys and Matt Joyces and David DeJesuses and land a Cameron Maybin and an Eric Young, Jr. You hit some guys who actually deliver. If the balance of the team had remained intact and productive, all they would have to do would be to play at replacement value.

But this team is not intact and production. We need guys from somewhere who will rise up and deliver at unexpected rates. And that is what Maybin and EY are doing. It's fun. It's exciting. It shows a scrappiness and determination that is desperately important in order to make up the loss of Mike Trout. That is a level of urgency that is refreshing to see, and I would love to see it stick around through Trout's return. All was on display yesterday in that back-and-forth battle which saw the Angels end up blowing out the Astros 12-6.

And that makes the Angels the first team in all of Major League Baseball to win a series against the 2017 Houston Astros. And they outscored them 22-13. A minor miracle.

A Little Bit of Angels News

Cameron Maybin is feeling it. Combining his Friday and Sunday games, he went 5 for 8, scored 7 runs, add in a couple of walks, and then stole 6 bases on top of it all. And just like that, Maybin is the AL stolen base leader, with 19. That is one hit-happy, base-stealing fool........(That last one with a 5-run lead in the 8th inning is sure to cause some margin notes in the Book of Unwritten Rules belonging to the Astros' Brian McCann.)..........

Maybin's presence means Shane Robinson's departure. I doubt Robinson will get very far. My guess is Salt Lake soon.........

Doug Fister Decision Day is approaching, and it might turn out that Billy Eppler signed himself another steal to plug into roster holes. Fister is acing his AAA tune up...........

It might be true that Brian McCann owns Ricky Nolasco over the course of their careers. But that home run Saturday? Nah. That's just Ricky being Nolasco..........

Kenyan Middleton is making some serious progress as middle relief. On he season, over 15.1 innings of work, he has a 2.35 ERA with 18 strikeouts against 10 hits and 8 walks.

Looks like somebody else noticed the dichotomy between the LAA billboard marketing campaign and our superhero sidelined for 2 months..........

This is certainly not one of the Angels' better seasons. But notice that nobody is placing Mike Scioscia on any of these watch lists? Prevailing wisdom would be that Sosh can't control injuries or draft results, and that this team may be OVER achieving. They are tracking towards 81 games even without a starting rotation and 2 months of Mike Trout...........

Everywhere In Baseball

It's DRAFT DAY 2017! Follow the progress here............First rounds tend to make for all-time great players............

Despite Yankee hype, no, Aaron Judge is not Mike Trout. But that does not mean that Judge is any slouch. Put that kid in Yankee Stadium and he is a beast (especially against the worst pitching staff in American League) , one that performed pitifully bad even by their own standards). Of his 21 home runs this season, 15 are at home, including this ballistic missile, and this interplanetary rocket launch..........Judge and the Yankees are in Anaheim for 3, starting tonight. And then we have to deal with him at home next week. We will get to compare his splits for ourselves..........

Kevin Kiermaier out for an extended period? Damn. One could carve out quite a few All-Star lineups from this year's DL..........

Remember that Kevin Kiermaier play the other night, when the fly ball hooked so fiercely it confused Kiermaier, which in itself confused the umpiring crew and tricked them into calling a home run?   Well, yesterday we had another fierce hook shot on a fly ball, and this time the umpires ruled against it being a home run. Without lasers, we will never know...........

We have Andrelton Simmons and are happy. The Braves have Sean Newcomb, and are on the verge of being  happy............

Koda Glover, Nats closer, has an accident at home and injures himself. He tells nobody, enters the game that night, blows the save, confesses he was not healthy...........

I dunno. It seems rather obvious that when a player nabs a decent guaranteed contract and then struggles to yield value for it, that player would probably not want to opt out of such a contract. So no surprises here............

As we all know, Minor League Baseball is chock-a-block full of dazzlingly fun promotional stunts. It's part of the lore, and the tradition. So it's unfortunate when the stream of ideas eventually goes wrong...And there are a lot of stakeholders who have to deal with the fallout...........

2017 NCAA Baseball Tourney continues. This weekend held the Super Regionals. Cal State Fullerton bounced Long Beach State in the SoCal 'stache championship, advancing to the College World Series. Oregon State swept Vanderbilt and also advanced. Cinderella Davidson was eliminated by Texas A&M.........The College World Series brackets and schedule are here. Yeah, everything starts this upcoming weekend..........

Nori Aoki has 716 hits in MLB. So I ask again, do the folks celebrating his 2,000th NPB/MLB combined hits also recognize Sadaharu Oh's 868 combined NPB/MLB home runs?..........Jose Bautista heads up, or Seattle Mariners totally braindead? I say the latter. It feels better...........What some people will do to snag a $10 baseball............Just sayin'. This particular sports scribe is smart enough to not ask stupid questions like this guy..........

Jordan Serena Destiny Watch

Serena failed to make an appearance all weekend. That's only 4 games over 17 days.

Too bad, too. Because as the 66ers took 2 out of 3 from Lancaster, they pasted 33 runs off 43 hits on the JetHawks..........

OT: The world lost Adam West over the weekend. For many, he was their first taste of the Batman. Say what you will about that version, but it cannot be denied that West, himself, certainly had a great sense of humor. Rest In Peace, Batman.
