Angels 7 Yankees 5
What’s better than beating the Yankees? Taking a series from them - that’s what. Thanks to strange plays, Simba heroics, and more amazing action from Eric Young Jr and a solid bullpen, the Angels are 1 game above .500 and have won 3 series in a row.
The Angels didn’t really waste time and they got their bats going early with 6 batters and 1 run in the 1st inning. Unfortunately, Shoemaker had given up 4 runs in the top of the 1st but you know what?? The team had his back and they scored 2 more runs in the 2nd and 2 more in the 3rd with the go ahead run being hit in by the spark plug Eric Young Jr.
Not all news was good, as Shoemaker left after just 3 innings and 58 pitches with forearm tightness (aka UCL problems??). At the rate pitchers go down on this team, let’s hope it’s nothing too serious and he bounced back quickly.
This game was full of awesome action, including a rare occurrence when Danny Espinosa recorded all 3 outs by only touching the ball once. A triple play? No. But Didi Gregorius was hit by batted ball and that out was credited to Espinosa. He followed that up by catching a line drive and stepping on 2nd for an unassisted double play. How cool was that??
Thanks to a throwing error by Yunel Escobar that should have been the 3rd out, the Yankees ended up getting runners on 1st and second before EYJ first outfield assist of the season to end a rally in the 5th inning and nab Aaron Judge at home. EYJ to the rescue - AGAIN. This play was a game changed for sure and then Parker came in and did his spidey thing - getting out of a jam and getting Starlin Castro to swing at ball 4 for the 3rd out.
Simmons stepped up in the 7th and hit his 7th homerun of the year after a Valbuena walk, putting the Angels ahead for good at 7-5.
David Hernandez put the icing on the cake with his first save of the year that was helped by a leaping Calhoun grab against the wall to snag the last out of the game. Oh wait. FU instant replay and umps in NY - they robbed that amazing Calhoun catch and prolonged the game by one pitch when Escobar fielded a ground ball for the final out. For real this time. Holy cow that game was electric - the Angels even got to celebrate the victory twice, so that’s good right??
This game was so awesome that EVERY SINGLE ANGELS STARTER got at LEAST 1 hit. Valbuena check. Espinosa check (another homerun!). The usual suspects? Check.
Yankee fan tears? TRIPLE CHECK. Today was good day.
