Cow Tipping: June 30th Angels Minor League Report - Brandon Marsh is like Mike Trout

Aside from tearing up the Minors, Brandon Marsh hurt his thumb sliding into a base. He’s like Mike in more ways than one.

Note: I won't be showing the "duds" for the rookie leagues unless they are top prospects or top draft picks. A lot of the guys in the rookie leagues are young and adjusting to pro ball. Many of them never make it past rookie ball, and even the truly gifted ones can have bad weeks, months, etc.

Gleyvin Pineda (2B, 20), hasn’t hit above .236 in 2 rookie season so far but he came out of the games strong this year with hits in all 4 games and a .429 AVG plus .556 OBP.

Kiber Arvelaez (RHP, 19), pitched to a 2.01 ERA in 16 games last year for the DSL Angels. So far in 2017 he hasn’t allowed a single earned run in his 12.2 innings yet he does have a 3-1 record. He’s also struck out 14, walking only 3 and has a .186 BAA and 0.87 WHIP.

Brandon Marsh* (OF, 19), is 15 for 30 in his first 7 pro games (he’s hit in every game). He also has a homerun, 4 stolen bases, and 2 outfields assists. He’s been tearing up Orem but unfortunately sprained his thumb doing a Mike Trout into a base and is listed as day to day.

Torii Hunter Jr. (OF, 22), He’s hitting .435 with a .500 OBP through 6 games.

David MacKinnon (1B, 22), was a 32nd round pick in 2017. He’s hitting .474 with a .580 OBP and 2 triples so far this year.

Julian Leon (C, 21) Started the season in High A then was send to extended spring training. In the 10 game since coming back, he he’s hitting .400 with 2 walks and 8 Ks.

Derek Jenkins (OF, 23), is hitting .333 over his last 10 games and .309 this season. He’s walked 3 times, stolen 3 bases, and struck out 5 times as well over those past 10 game.

Jack Kruger (C, 22), Has thrown out an impressive 37% of base stealers this year. Over his past 10 games he has a .368 AVG with 2 homeruns.

Jahmai Jones* (OF, 19), Jahmai is hitting .310 over his last 10 games with 2 stolen bases and a walk.


Roberto Baldoquin (SS, 22), Baldoquin is hitting .250 over his last 10 games and .253 on the season. He has 9 errors in 45 games at SS this year.

Samil De Los Santos (RHP, 23), has allowed just 1 ER in his last 6 appearances and 7 innings. He’s also struck out 11 and walked only 2 in those 7 innings.

Brendon Sanger (OF, 23), is hitting .486 over his last 10 games with 4 homeruns, 11 RBIs, and 4 walks.

Jose Rojas (3B, 24, Rojas has a .359 AVG over his last 10 games with 2 homeruns and 9 RBIs.

Brennon Lund (OF, 22), Lund has been hitting well to the tune of a .318 AVG since his call-up to High A on June 1st. Over those 15 games, he has a .386 OBP, 3 homeruns, and 3 walks.


Connor Justus (SS, 22), has been really struggling with his bat and is only hitting .105 over his past 10 games with 7 Ks and 3 walks.


[Moving up - June 16] Sean Isaac (RHP, 24) Gave up 2 runs in his first post call-up outing, but then threw 6.2 scoreless innings with 12 Ks over his next two appearances.

Taylor Ward* (C,23), Ward is hitting .231 over his past 10 games with a homerun, 7 walks, and 8 Ks. Ward has thrown out 31% of would be base stealers this year.

Matt Thaiss* (1B, 21), is hitting .256 over his last 10 games with 10 RBIs, 4 walks, and 7 Ks.

Mobile BayBears (28-37)
Mobile, Alabama
Level = AA, Southern League


Grayson Long* (RHP, 22), Over his last two starts, Long has pitched 12 innings and allowed just 1 ER and 2 walks while striking out 10. He’s had just a few small hiccups this year and overall has a 3.14 ERA in AA over 12 starts.

Abel De Los Santos (RHP, 24), Went on the DL June 23rd. Has had a good season for Mobile and allowed only 1 walk and no runs over his last 6 innings and 3 appearances. he also struck out 5 in those 6 games and allowed 4 hits.

Greg Mahle (LHP, 24), Mahle has found a home for now in AA it seems. Over his past 6 appearances he hasn’t allowed a run and has struck out 9 over 9 innings. He has an overall 3.27 ERA in AA this year.

Adam Hofacket (RHP, 23) allowed just 1 run in the month of June over 11 innings. He also struck out 14 and allowed just 3 walks.

Jaime Barria* (RHP, 20), Barria was a Cal League All Star and now will be representing the Angels in the MLB All Star Futures game. Over his last 4 starts he threw 19.2 innings and allowed just 2 runs, 3 walks, and he struck out 19. Barria may end up in AAA before long as he has just a 0.76 ERA in AA this year with a .179 BAA and 0.76 WHIP - pure domination.

Forrestt Allday (OF, 26), Allday continues to be hot and is hitting .360 over his last 10 games with 9 walks, 2 stolen bases, and just 1 K.

David Fletcher (SS, 22), Fletcher is hitting .429 in his last 10 games with 4 walks, 2 stolen bases, and only 2 Ks.


Bo Way (OF, 25), after a brief and fairly successful AAA stint, he landed back in AA and is hitting only .143 over his past 10 games with 10 Ks.


[Moving Down - June 15th] Sherman Johnson (2B, 26), hit only .235 in AAA this year with a .361 OBP. So far he’s got a .273 AVG and .400 OBP for Mobile in 11 games.

[Moving Up- June 28th] Jordan Serena (3B, 24), Serena was only hitting .243 in High A ball but was moved up to Mobile where he has so far gone 3 for 9 with 2 doubles in 3 games.

Michael Hermosillo (OF, 22), is heating up a bit with a .286 AVG over his last 10 games. He hasn’t played since June 24th.

Salt Lake Bees (36-31 / 1st place)
Salt Lake City, Utah
Level = AAA, Pacific Coast League


Manny Banuelos (LHP, 26), hasn’t allowed a run over his last 3 appearances and 5.1 innings. Since being moved to the bullpen this year he has a 3.08 ERA in 32.1 IP.

Troy Scribner (RHP, 25), was just named a AAA All Star. Over this last 3 starts he’s allowed just 4 ER in 19.2 innings while striking out 22. In his last start on Wednesday, he struck out 11 over 7 innings with only 3 hits and 1 walk allowed.

Carlos Perez (C, 26), Perez is 7 for his last 14 with only 1 K. In fact, he’s only struck out 4 times in his last 33 AB while hitting .333

Shane Robinson (OF, 32), Ah the life of a perrential 4th outfielder. Over his last 10 games, Robinson is batting .390 with 4 stolen bases.

Nolan Fontana (SS, 26) Hitting .343 over his last 10 games with his 8th homerun of the year on Tuesday.

Deolis Guerra (RHP, 28) Was pretty good for the Angels last year then horrible to start off 2017. In the minors this year he has a 1.38 ERA and has given up only 2 ER in 13 IP.

Eduardo Paredes (RHP, 22), was used to eat up a few innings for the Angels and he gave up 2 runs. For the Bees, he hasn’t allowed a run over his last 6 appearances for a streak of 11.1 scoreless innings.

Jason Gurka (LHP, 29), Perhaps sensing the pending demise of Jose Alvarez, Eppler nabbed Gurka after he was released by the Yankees AAA team. Since joining the Bees, he has a 2.89 ERA and 1.20 WHIP ver 9.1 innings. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 6 appearances.


Damien Magnifico (RHP, 26), Magnifico gave up the go ahead run in the 10th inning on Thursday and notched the loss. In his previous 5 innings and 3 appearances, he hadn’t allowed a run.

Alex Blackford (RHP, 26), hasn’t really gotten it together in AAA. He has given up 20 runs over his last 3 games in only 8.2 innings. He also has a 9.76 ERA on the season for Salt Lake.


John Lamb (LHP, 26) Lamb started his first game after being out due to injury, then suspension for using a “drug of choice”. He gave up 2 runs and struck out 2 over 4 innings.

Nate Smith (LHP, 25), pitched a 2 inning rehab start for the AZL ANgels on 6/24 No hits, no walks, no runs, and 2 Ks..

Kaleb Cowart (3B, 24), Cowart has gone 1 for 8 since returning from the Angels as a hero. For now he stays in AAA..
