Derby Links: Angels grind to an All-Star halt

New, 58 comments

The Angels win to close out the first half, but limped into the Break at only 3 and 6. Time for Trout to come to the rescue.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Well, that run out to the All-Star Break could have been worse. After splitting the Dodger series and showing some backbone against some top teams in Baseball, the Halos ran through the final 3 series of the first half with 3 wins against 6 losses. Yesterday was one of those charity wins, 3-0 against the Rangers.

Don't be fooled. The Angels scored only 7 runs over the last 36 innings of the first half. These guys are the worst Slugging team in the League, and the worst OPS team in the League. 8 of their guys sent up to the plate yesterday are hitting a mere .245 or less. By some measures, that's the worst offense in the AL. These guys need more than a hero.

Countdown to the last of the Lost Weeks Links:

A Little Bit of Angels News

Official MLB web articles are saying that Mike Trout WILL be back when the Angels open the second half at home this Friday............

All-Star Break Factoid: The Angels have played 92 games so far. The official MLB rule for "qualified" players is 3.1 Plate Appearances per team game played. That would be 285 PA's right now In the entire history of the LAA franchise the lowest season-ending BA for a qualified player is Bobby Knoop, who stank up the 1964 season with .216. Dave Chalk and Devon White are right behind him at .217, in the years 1976 and 1990, respectively. And, certainly, we have Vernon Wells in 2012 with a .218. Nobody else is particularly close. Except this year. Right now Danny Espinosa is batting .1??. His saving grace is that he is short PA's to qualify, being ?? behind at ???. But he has half a season to catch up. He needs 500. He has 70 games to get there. Play them all, average 3.4 PA's per, and he shatters the franchise record. Probably lowers it to a new standard that will not be broken in the lifetime of anybody reading this page today. And the only thing standing in the way of immortality would be Nick Franklin............

Anybody ever hear of "posterior interosseous nerve syndrome"? Yeah, me neither. Which is why it has to be us. Matt Shoemaker has this thing, and has been shut down completely over the next week. Then they will look at restarting his comeback...........

Hey Crop Dusters! While you are out buzzing the farms, pay attention to Torii Hunter, Jr............

Everywhere In Baseball

The Home Run Derby is tonight, people. 5PM PDT on ESPN. But everything you need to know is right here..............

Commissioner Manfred's Town Hall is today. Let me be of assistance. No, the baseballs are not juiced and the proof is in all the testing that shows them to be exactly as they were last year. Yes, MLB continues to look into pace-of-play issues and we should see some ideas put forth this offseason. MLB see progress in partnerships with various social media services as being critical to connecting with the next generation of fans. It's never enough, but MLB  is proud of the ongoing work being made towards diversity, and there is great progress being made with the inner-city programs headed up by Tony Reagins. Did I miss anything?............

Team USA defeated Team World in the Futures Game (which should be held on Wednesdays during the Break, and not Sundays when MLB games are going on. Just my opinion. And I am not the only one who notices.)..........One guuy who did NOT miss the Futures game was Big Daddy Vladdy.............

Launch Angle + Exit Velocity. Add them up right and you clear the fence. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to learn where the batter is making a mistake...........

The Astros leave their tire treads all over the faces of the Blue Jays as they drift off to the break. 13 of those runs came over the last 4 innings. The Jays will get a lot of time to think about that one, and that is not the kind of thing the Jays forget...........

Something that will also be a tough thing to forget would be Jon  Lester's start yesterday against the Pirates. 6 hits, 3 walks, 10 runs scored with 5 of them earned and all on 53 pitches. The bitch of the matter is that he did all that and didn't even make it out of the first inning...............

Hey Marcus Stroman! You don't want to have your delicate ass interrupted while pitching? Stop the stupid double windup and just pitch the freakin' baseball.............

Bartolo Colon ain't quite done yet. He signed with the Twins and is in their Minor League system. But the real news is that the Mets are really bummed they didn't get Colon back.............

The Duffle Bag

Jered Weaver is done. Almost. All that's left appears to be the paperwork............Jeffrey Loria might be having a tough time getting his price to sell the Marlins, but it looks like he is betting on making up any difference on All-Star Game concessions.............Dodger Stadium: home of the rally flashing grandma. Please wear goggles.............Uh oh. This will surely become a thing from now on. The MLB All-Star Selection show was a big ratings hit for ESPN.............Minor League player blind in one eye doing at least as well as Tim Tebow. The Minor League team is the St. Paul Saints. Fun synergy going on there............Yeah that make sense. The Phillies suck because they are distracted by all the new baseball stats going on everywhere.............

Jordan Serena Destiny Watch

Out in San Bernardino, Jordan Serena got into one game over the weekend, going 0 for 4 on Saturday with 1 K. But with Brandon Sanger getting promoted to Mobile, the IE 66ers outfield logjam opens up a little bit............

But all the attention was paid to Mike Trout. Trout didn't play on Friday, but did play on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday he doubled and walked, and scored a run going 1 for 2. Sunday was the fun one. He was 1 for 2 with a triple, but walked 3 times - twice in the very first inning! - and scored 3 times............
